NATCHEZ — Cathedral starting pitcher Sam Parker threw a five-inning complete game and led the Green Wave to a 6-3 win over Parklane Academy Tuesday night.

Parker, an East Central Community College signee, recorded four strikeouts with one walk and allowed just three hits.

“Sam has been consistent all year on the mound,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “He was filling up the zone for us.”

Cathedral held a 5-0 lead through three innings. In the top of the fourth, Parker gave up his first hit to the leadoff man at the top of the Parklane batting order. Two batters later, Parker threw the ball away on a grounder that put two on. Cory Lewis then dinged a bases-clearing double.

Parker rebounded, however, forcing a ground out and recording a strike out to end the threat. Parker then sat down Parklane’s batters in order in the fifth inning to seal the win.

“Usually I go for the strikeout, but I let my defense work (Tuesday),” Parker said. “I’ll take responsibility for throwing the ball away and not backing up home plate. But we played a lot of good ball (Thursday).”

Cathedral’s Brock Farmer was 2-for-3 with a double and RBIs in back-to-back innings.

Farmer’s double came in the third with two outs and sparked a three-run rally for the Green Wave.

“I saw it come off the bat and watched it go,” Farmer said. “Heard Coach (Beesley) saying, ‘You’ve got two, up easy.’ I slid into two anyway. It’s just a habit.”

Farmer bounced back after a strikeout in his first at bat. Beesley said his timing was better on his final two trips to the plate.

“He was a little out in front early in the game, but on those at-bats he stayed back,” Beesley said.

Cathedral had five hits and drew five walks in the game. Cathedral left eight runners on base, coming to bat in four innings. Beesley said he looks forward to more consistency with runners in scoring position.

“We hit the ball well (Tuesday), but we couldn’t always hit when we had runners in scoring position,” Beesley said. “We had a couple opportunities to break it open. We had runners on base all game, but hopefully as these kids play together, we’ll gel on offense.”

Jacob Jenkins recorded a single with an RBI. Pate Shirley was 1-for-2 with a walk. Jardarius Anderson was 2-for-3 with two singles.

Cathedral sits at 6-2 and is slated for a home-and-away series against Wesson at the end of the week.
