NATCHEZ — After posting a 4-under par 67 Saturday, Pete Powell had the Harvest Club golf tournament title in his sights.

All he had to do was maintain his poise through the final day.

Powell, however, wasn’t able to duplicate his stellar round recorded the day prior on Sunday, but managed to do just enough in shooting a 76 to claim the top spot of the champions flight of the tournament hosted at Duncan Park.

“I just had such a big lead that they couldn’t catch me,” Powell said. “That’s what it all boiled down to. It was a lot tougher (Saturday), the wind was stronger, and that got everyone’s scores up a little bit. I kept on making bogeys (Sunday).

“This is a good tournament. ”

Eighty-one competitors played in the Harvest Club’s 41st annual tournament over the weekend, which began with a practice round Friday.

“I think we lost a few golfers who thought we would have bad weather,” Watkins said. “But those that dared to come, the weather turned out gorgeous.”

Watkins said the 36-hole competition featured area golfers and also brought in several competitors from nearby states including Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee.

One of those Louisiana competitors was Lafayette resident and 2015 tournament champion Joe Percival, marking the11th-consecutive year he’s taken part in the event.

“I really enjoy this tournament and plan on coming back for the next couple of years,” Percival said. “I had a lot of fun, and I’ve been having a lot of fun the last couple of years. It’s the first tournament of the year, and it gets everybody going.”

Watkins said the Harvest Club has been around for approximately 45 years and is actively involved in promoting golf in the community.

“We try to harvest the youth out of the community and try to give them another road to do, other than what they see on TV,” he said.

With this year’s event in the books, Watkins already has his eyes on next year’s tournament, with the hope of making it an even bigger event.

“We’re already talking about next year now,” Watkins said. “One of the things we want to do is hit the number of 92 (golfers), and see if we can bring some more golfers into Natchez.”
