Natchez — For the second straight day, Trinity seventh grader Harris Pyron and and eighth grader Taylor Lessley proved to be the difference.

A day after helping their tennis squad clinch a 5-4 win over Briarfield Academy, the tandem was back at it Thursday as it led Trinity to a 5-4 win over Cathedral High School on its home tennis court.

Pyron and Harris earned a 6-2, 6-2 win on the mixed doubles court to clinch the win.

“We served well and had good teamwork,” Lessley said. “We’re pretty balanced (as a pair).”

Trinity coach Noreen Pyron said allowing young players get varsity reps in important situations is good experience, although she doesn’t alert them of the stakes during the match.

“I’m glad to have these young ones playing,” Pyron said. “It helps them come along.”

On boys singles Court 1, Cole Mosby set the tone of the day for Trinity with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.

Mosby said he stayed effective by staying cool on the court and not getting frustrated after little mistakes. Mosby said having a strong match to start out on court one can help spark his team.

“I believe if I play to the best of my ability it could give my teammates some motivation,” Mosby said. “I’ve practiced my serve as much as I can, it paid off in the match.”

Cathedral knotted the score 1-1 when Grace Anne White took her match on girls singles Court 1 6-2, 6-0.

Cathedral took a 2-1 advantage after Jackson Carpenter and Matt Mckinney earned a 6-2, 7-6 win on boys doubles Court 1, but Trinity Singles 2 player Grant Falkenheimer tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Perhaps one of the most intense matches of the day came on girls doubles Court 1. Cathedral pair Paige Foster and Natalie Fletcher pulled out a tie-break victory in a match that had plenty of long rallies between them and Trinity pair Lucy Pyron and Tali Beard.

Cathedral ended the match on a volley to Foster, who slammed the ball in the alley. Foster said net play was a crucial part of winning the match.

“The net players on each teams are very good,” Foster said. “I was aiming for (the alley), but it hit the top of my racquet. It still went in, which is good.”

Foster and Fletcher won 7-6, 4-6, 1-0. It’s the first season the two have been playing together as a doubles tandem.

“We work together very well,” Foster said.

“We just know how each other play, (Foster) is good at the net and I can keep a rally going,” Fletcher said.

Trinity’s Madelyn Falkenheimer erased the Cathedral advantage with a 6-0 6-0 sweep on the girls singles Court 2.

On girls doubles Court 2, Cathedral’s Marty Lewis and Lessley Dooley earned a 6-0, 6-1 win to seesaw the match back in the Green Wave’s favor, but Trinity pair Sam Mosby and Hartley Pyron swept 6-0, 6-1 and tied the match at 4-4, leaving the deciding point to the result of the mixed doubles court.

Trinity tennis improved to 3-0 on the season.

“(Playing Cathedral at home) was great,” Pyron said. “The kids all know each other, and they play together in their off time. ”
