Cathedral breezes to 12-1 win

NATCHEZ — Cathedral dismantled Salem High School Thursday night in a 14-hit performance that led to a 12-1 win in five innings.

“I was pleased with the way they hit the ball (Thursday),“ coach Craig Beesley said. “It was senior night, and we got all the seniors in. It was a big night for them.”

Cathedral’s Jacob Jenkins was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Pate Shirley earned the win for the Green Wave, pitching two hitless innings. Shirley helped his cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. Eight of 10 Cathedral batters recorded a base hit. Four Cathedral pitchers combined to allow just one hit to Salem. Salem’s lone run was unearned in the fifth.

Cathedral jumped out to ta 2-0 lead in the first inning. Andrew Beesley drew a leadoff walk followed an RBI single from Craig Bradley. Shirley’s triple scored Bradley later in the inning.

Cathedral is in a tie with Columbia Academy for the district lead. Cathedral beat Columbia 4-1 at home on April 4;, and the Green Wave are traveling today to Columbia for the district crown.

“Sam (Parker) will get the start,” Beesley said. “If he’s on, he’ll hold them down for us.”
