Cathedral girls clinch tennis tournament championship

LAUREL — The Cathedral High School girls tennis squad won the South State championship Wednesday, edging out Laurel Christian 3-2.

“They played phenomenal,” coach Beth Foster said. “They had a lot of teamwork, and the girls came out ahead the entire match.”

The Lady Green Wave’s No. 1 girls singles Natalie Fletcher and Paige Foster defeated Simpson Academy.

Cathedral’s girls No. 2 doubles Marty Lewis and Emma Hogue defeated Laurel Christian to claim the top in its field, and the Lady Green Wave’s No. 2 singles Lessley Dooley topped Laurel Christian in her finals contest.

Cathedral’s No. 1 singles, Grace Ann White, and mixed doubles, Courtney Carter and Xavier Hawkins, both advanced to the finals before falling in the championship round to Laurel Christian players.

All Cathedral players who advanced to the finals qualified for a spot in the state tournament next week.

The state tournament will be held in Jackson.
