ALEXANDRIA, La. — Services for David Allen Hughes Sr., 76, of Alexandria, La., who died Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Grace Home in Alexandria, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at John Kramer and Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B. David Brooks officiating.  05:24 DavidAHughes Sr. obitpic

Burial will follow at Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer and Son Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Bunkie, La., the son of David Bedell Hughes and Ione Shanks Hughes.

He was a 1958 Vidalia High School graduate and served as class president. He completed his undergraduate degree at Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, La., in 1961. He earned his juris doctorate in 1964 from Louisiana State University Law School and began practicing law in Ferriday with Lloyd Love Law Firm.

Mr. Hughes joined Gist, Methvin and Gist Law Firm in Alexandria. This firm eventually became Gist, Methvin, Hughes and Munsterman. As a member of the junior bar association in 1968, he served as president. In 2000, he left Gist, Methvin, Hughes and Munsterman and established Hughes and LeFleur Law Firm. The Alexandria Bar Association honored Mr. Hughes with the presentation of their annual Causidicus Award in 2007, for his lifelong meritorious service to the bar and community. In 2009, he went into private practice, establishing Hughes Law Firm. After 50 dedicated years of service, he retired in 2015.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Francis Hughes Alexander.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Mary Alexander Hughes; his four children, Michelle Hughes Hutchins and husband, Scott, Melissa Hughes Albert and husband, Gene, Heather Hughes Buckner and husband, Bryan, and David Allen Hughes Jr.; one sister, Ruth Hughes Fletcher; two stepchildren, Kelly Carpenter Escamilla and husband, Victor, and Todd Carpenter; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family extends sincere appreciation for the outstanding care provided to David Allen Hughes, the staff at Hilltop Nursing Center, Pineville, La., Cabrini Hospital ICU, Alexandria and Grace Home in Alexandria.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
