South Pike edges Jefferson County in overtime

William Carter Jr. scored the second of his two touchdowns in overtime to give the South Pike High School Eagles a 20-14 win over the Jefferson County High School Tigers Friday night.

South Pike jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 34 yards by Dontavious Turner and one yard by Carter Jr. But Jefferson County kept South Pike scoreless for the rest of regulation.

The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard on a 12-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run by Jaheime Herrington with 11:37 left in the third quarter. They then tied the game at 14-14 with 3:55 remaining in regulation on Rah’Kendrick Reynolds’ seven-yard touchdown pass to Jaqurious Blake. However, the two-point conversion run failed and the game went into overtime.

Carter Jr. won the game for South Pike on a four-yard run.

Reynolds and Herrington each had 45 rushing yards – Reynolds on 10 carries and Herrington on 12 carries – while Reynolds went 7-for-22 passing for 82 yards. Blake caught all seven of Reynolds’ passes.

As a team, Jefferson County managed just 180 yards of total offense against a stout South Pike defense

Jefferson County (0-1) plays at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Natchez High School.
