NATCHEZ — An Adams County man was charged with murder Wednesday for the New Year’s Day shooting death of another man.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said Jovan Keontra Singleton, 21, 4 Johnson Circle, was arrested Wednesday for the Jan. 1 murder of 24-year-old Bobby Butler.

Butler was found shot to death in the roadway of Gardner Circle. Butler was last seen alive by family members on New Year’s Eve 2015, and relatives have said Butler was shooting dice with others when a scuffle broke out, followed by at least one gunshot.

Butler’s family made a public plea last month for those with knowledge of Butler’s murder to come forward.

Butler’s mother Sandy Larry and sisters Dequita Jackson, Delisha Butler and Ti’lia Larry said Wednesday evening they were overwhelmed to hear of the arrest, which came on the birthday of Bobby Butler’s 9-year-old son.

“We’ve been waiting for this day,” Sandy Larry said. “My heart is so relieved, and God is so good. It couldn’t have happened on a better day.”

Delisha Butler, who works as a sergeant in the Adams County Jail, said her nephew’s birthday was bittersweet.

“I’m excited that they finally found him, but it’s a bittersweet moment,” she said. “I’m sad also because of the situation itself.”

Sheriff Travis Patten did not provide specifics on what led investigators to connect Singleton to the murder, saying “everything will come out in court.”

“For the Butler family, this day has been a long time coming,” he said. “To see this day finally get here, it’s up to the Lord and the public to do the rest.”

Three people were also arrested Wednesday for reportedly aiding Butler in eluding arrest.

Valencia Danielle Brown, 19, 318-B Dumas St., Schaunn Derick Lawrence, 45, 84 W. Wilderness Road, and Jordan Simone White, 20, 75 Cedar Lane, were charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Brown, Lawrence and White were being held at the Adams County Jail on $100,000 bonds Wednesday evening.

Singleton was being held without bond.
