FERRIDAY — As soon as the rainy weather clears, the Ferriday Street Department hopes to clean up a dump site on Virginia Avenue and install no dumping signs.

Ferriday Street Department Superintendent Jerry Beatty said the problem area runs along Virginia Avenue from Eighth Street to Tenth Street. Beatty said the location is primarily a wooded area and can be dark at night.

“We don’t have a problem with people dumping trash anywhere else,” Beatty said. “People just ride through there, it’s a dark area, and throw trash into the woods.”

The fine for dumping in Ferriday is $556. Beatty said Ferriday Police Department officers would patrol the area to catch the people dumping.

“We are pretty strict on the dumping,” Beatty said. “There is no dumping period in Ferriday town limits. You have to put it in a garbage bag in the trash on the curb for (Waste Pro) to pick up Tuesday and Friday.”

Beatty said the trash being dumped is mainly regular garbage and papers, not larger items such as furniture.

The landowner will not be billed for the cleanup, Beatty said.

“He is not responsible,” he said. “It’s people dumping or maybe some neighbors who aren’t packing their garbage tight enough and the wind is blowing it away.”

Ferriday Alderwoman Chryl Smith Lee brought the issue up during the town’s December meeting. Lee requested the no dumping signs for her district and asked that they include the fine amount on them.

At the meeting, Ferriday Mayor Sherrie Jacobs said she had noticed dumping in the area.

“That’s my street, and I’m embarrassed,” she said.
