Adams County Christian and Delta Charter schools made history Thursday as the soccer programs from each side squared off in the first ever varsity matchup between the two schools.

ACCS got scores from Jordan Wells, Kyle Williams and Cristofer Thompson and the more experienced Rebels topped the Storm, 4-1.

“We got an opportunity to get all of our guys in the match today,” ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood said. “I’m very impressed with Delta Charter. This was a history-making day for both schools in our area. I’ve got to give kudos to their coach and their players; I am very proud of where they’re at.”

ACCS, which is in its eighth varsity year compared to DCS’ inaugural varsity campaign, demonstrated its experience by holding possession for the majority of the contest and capitalizing on mistakes when presented.

“They did a good job, and they have a really talented midfielder (Thompson),” DCS coach Daniel Rivera said. “He’s a very talented player. They kept us on our back heels the whole game. Our goalie had a tough time on goal kicks, and that kind of buried on us on our own end.”

Wells gave the Rebels (5-1) an early advantage as he got passed the Storm defense in the ninth minute for the opening score.

“We weren’t really connecting early on, then midway through the first half, we got our game going,” Allgood said. “I’m proud of each and every one of my guys.”

In the 26th minute, Williams delivered a long corner kick that was headed in by Thompson for the second score.

“One of the most beautiful crosses that we’ve ever had, and it was just awesome,” Allgood said.

Williams gave ACCS a commanding 3-0 midway through the second half, and Thompson added his second goal of the match six minutes later.

“What we’re trying to do is settle in for the second half (of the year), and find that right chemistry,” Allgood said. “We were passing and trapping, and I liked what I saw in the second half.”

However, DCS (2-5-1) wouldn’t go away quietly.

Forward Jacob Hawkins got past the ACCS backline and delivered a perfect chip shot that floated out of the reach of Rebel goalie Marshall Edmonds and into the back of the net.

“We had the opportunities, but we were stuck playing defense for the majority of the game,” Rivera said. “Credit them for how they controlled the middle of the field, but we had many opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. But, overall, I was content with the effort our players gave. I was content with how hard they fought for every ball, and I look at their jerseys and see how dirty they are, and that’s how I know.”

ACCS will travel next Wednesday to Copiah Academy, while DCS hosts Grace Christian Jan. 10.
