Second by second, time slowing moves on, never ceasing, never slowing.

Today, as we began a new year, we pause to reflect on the year past and consider the many significant changes that occurred in our community during 2016.

Our area’s economy remained slowed by relatively low oil and gas prices, but like the Mississippi River that bisects and defines our community, our economic continued to roll along.

Natchez lost many, many good men and women in 2016. Their legacy and impact on our community will long be felt.

And, as Natchez celebrated 300 years of its history, we like to think the community gained far more than a year’s maturity during 2016. The year was truly a watershed moment for tourism and those who lead tourism efforts in the area.

As the New Year begins, let our hope — our resolution — for the new year to be simple. Let us learn from the past and not repeat errors of yesteryear.

Let us look forward to the future, a bright future and one that we build together.

If history tells us anything, it should prove to us that people could do amazing things when motivated and working together. Let’s make history in 2017 and make the year one that is marked as a turning point in the history of our community, the year when we stopped bickering amongst ourselves and began working together as a cohesive team.

Happy New Year to each of you.
