VIDALIA — Vidalia police captured Monday one of the two men who reportedly led police on a chase and escaped after they allegedly broke into vehicles parked at a Riverfront hotel.

With assistance from Natchez law enforcement, Vidalia police had already captured one of the suspects on Dec. 18, when the incident occurred. Vidalia police still seek a third suspect.

Mikel D. Chatman, 27, 9 Spring St., Natchez, was charged with five counts burglary, aggravated battery on a police officer, aggravated flight, two counts resisting an officer and felony criminal damage to property.

VPD investigator Lt. Clint Robinson said with numerous reports of vehicle burglaries along the Riverfront leading up to Dec. 18, patrol in the area had been strengthened.

Shortly after 3 a.m. on Dec. 18, Robinson said patrol officers spotted two men shining lights into vehicles in the Comfort Inn and Suites parking lot. When the officers exited their vehicle and identified themselves, the two men ran and got into an older model SUV.

While fleeing, the vehicle struck a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy causing minor injuries. The officer and deputy got into a patrol vehicle and pursued.

A second VPD patrol unit joined the chase near the bridge and was reportedly struck by the SUV as the suspects fled Vidalia.

While fleeing at a high rate of speed in downtown Natchez, the SUV allegedly hit a third Vidalia patrol vehicle as the suspects attempted to enter the area near Williams Apartments on Aldrich Street.

Three suspects fled the vehicle. One suspect was captured but the two males escaped. An Adams County Sheriff’s Office K-9 dog tracked the men to the apartments, but lost the scent in the rain storm.

Shannon Imon White, 33, 53 Brenham Ave., Natchez, was charged with five counts of simple burglary.  She was in jail Monday on a $100,000 bond.

Robinson said Vidalia police seek the third suspect.

The Vidalia police patrol units sustained minor damage during the collisions.

Robinson said multiple items were recovered that were reportedly stolen in the suspects’ vehicle. The items were valued at more than $1,000, and Robinson said $200 in cash that had been collected for a charity fund was also recovered.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to contact VPD at 318-336-5254 and ask to speak to Robinson.

Chatman was in jail Monday with no bond set.
