NATCHEZ — A 15-year-old cyclist was hit by a truck Sunday afternoon and was sent to Merit Health Natchez with minor injuries.

Natchez Interim Chief of Police Shawn T. King said the child was struck at approximately 2:24 p.m. on the frontage road between Home Bank and Parkway Baptist Church.

King said two juvenile cyclists were traveling northbound on the frontage road. When a person driving a 1999 GMC Sierra truck attempted to pass the children in the other lane, the 15-year-old boy veered into the southbound lane and was hit, King said.

King said the child was transported to Merit Health by AMR with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

“What my officers told me was it appeared to be road rash,” King said. “To what extent, I’m not sure.”

King said police had not received an update on his condition as of Friday evening.

King said the accident was still under investigation.
