Adams County road budget to increase

NATCHEZ — The Adams County administrator projected Monday supervisors would spend approximately $38,000 more for its road and bridge budgets in the upcoming year.

Approximately $25,000 of the increase is for debt incurred in purchasing four dump trucks, said County Administrator Joe Murray.

“They had to buy them because the others were broken down,” Murray said. “We do have buy backs on them, so that lowers the annual payment.”

Murray said the trucks would be bought back in five years for approximately $100,000.

“They will write a check at the end so we are basically just financing half of it,” he said. “They guarantee they will buy them back as long as we maintain it, which is not a big deal. We will make sure we service it.”

The total for the road budget is approximately $1.8 million. The total bridge budget is approximately $1,260,000.

In the road and bridge budgets, approximately $4,000 of the increase is for rental of equipment and in the bridge department, approximately $5,000 is in addition for culverts.

Murray said the rental of equipment was due to the recent trend of flooding and having to repair roads that end up underwater.

“They are making the assumption that the river will come back up and they have to rent the equipment,” Murray said. “If the river does not flood, then that money won’t be spent.”

The bridge crews have had to replace more culverts in the last year than typical, Murray said.

“They are putting more money in there in case that trend continues on culverts,” Murray said. “It may not. A budget is just a guess — you try to make your best guess of it.”

Additional spraying for weeds in the county could also mean an additional $2,400 in herbicide costs for the road department, Murray said.

Road Manager Robbie Dollar submitted an equipment wish list to the county, which includes a pick-up truck for approximately $25,000 and a track hoe for approximately $190,000. The Adams County Board of Supervisors took no action on Dollar’s wish list.
