Silliman dominates track meet at ACCS Thursday

The Kramer Fife Relays turned into the Silliman show, as the Wildcats took home first place in three of four categories.

Silliman’s varsity boys eked out a win over Huntington, 68-63, while the varsity girls won by 65 points over the closest competitor, Trinity Episcopal.

Silliman’s junior varsity girls won by four points over ACCS, and Trinity Episcopal’s JV boys had a dominant performance with a 30-point win over Silliman.

With 10 schools competing in a meet that lasted over nine hours, there was plenty of work to be done, and ACCS track coach Warren Whitaker said he couldn’t have done it without the help of his many volunteers.

“I feel like it went fine,” Whitaker said. “It takes a lot to run a track meet. I appreciate our many sponsors and our helpers. They made a lot of difference for us.

“I think we had a good turnout. We had a lot of schools come in and some good competition.”

Whitaker said track & field programs are vital for every sport at a school.

“Track will build athletes,” he said. “It builds everything. It builds speed, it builds discipline. A good track program is good for a school and good for the athletes.”

With the biggest track meet of the year out of the way, Whitaker and ACCS must now brace for the JV district meet Monday, as well as the varsity district meet Wednesday.

“Three (meets) in six days is a lot,” he said. “That’s a marathon for me.”
