Saggy pants now illegal in Lousiana town

Published Tuesday, August 14, 2007

MANSFIELD, La. (AP) — Effective Sept. 15, anyone in this northwest Louisiana town caught wearing sagging pants that expose his or her underwear will be subject to a fine up to $150 plus court costs, or face up to 15 days in jail.

Mansfield aldermen Monday voted unanimously and without discussion to enact the law. Mayor Curtis McCoy said he proposed it because he was concerned about the number of individuals who wear pants that expose their underwear. The citizens of Mansfield, he said, should not have to put up with it.

City attorney Richard Z. Johnson Jr. said he researched state statutes and borrowed from a similar law adopted in the south Louisiana town of Delcambre as a guideline in creating Mansfield’s ordinance. Several municipalities and parish governments in Louisiana have enacted similar laws in recent months.

FINALLY!!!!

this is fantastic. i'm elated about this new law.

the other day i was driving thru ferriday, la. a town where most of the young people were there pants/shorts very very low.

one of the boys had the waist of his shorts down to a few inches above his knees and that's not all.........his boxer underwear were pulled down to just slightly above his penis AND most of his butt crack was exposed!

there were very young children playing nearby within viewing distance!

so, this has got to be stopped. they are not satified with just the pants/shorts worn way down.

now they're adding the low position of their underwear to the disgust!!!

i'm going to copy this article and email to all my friends & family. also i'm going to send it to our lawmakers.

excellent mansfield!!!! thank you!!!

I BELIVE THIS MATTER SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO BY THE LA SURPREME COURT TO CHECK THE LEGALITY OF THIS ISSUE.IF IT DOESNT VIOLATE A PERSONS RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION,NATCHEZ SHOULD ALSO ADOPT THIS LAW.IM MORE FOR PROTECTING AND THE UPHOLDING OF OUR VERY BRITTLE CONSTATUTION,THAN I AM ABOUT WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE WAY PEOPLE DRESS.I MEAN WHATS NEXT?YOU GUYS GONNA OUTLAW T-SHIRTS WITH CERTAIN SLOGGANS ON THEM?OR WILL YOU MAKE A LAW SAYING WE CANT HAVE TATTOOS?SEE I KNOW WHERE THIS PATHETIC LAW IS GOIN, CREATED BY A FEW SOUTHERNERS WHO SIMPLY BELIVE THAT THIS KINDA DRESS CODE IS INDESENT EXPOSURE.BUT THE REALLITY OF IT ALL IS, IT SIMPLY ISNT.I HOPE SOMEONE TAKES THIS MATTER BEFORE THE LA SUPREME COURT AND LET THEM DECIDE IF THIS IS A VIOLATION OF A PERSONS SECOND AMMENDMENT RIGHTS.

FINALLY!!!!!
But now what are they gonna do to draw attention to themselves. Obviously anyone that feels the need to walk around with their underwear hanging out. Needs lots of attention. Be baggy, be saggy, but keep them fruit of the looms covered up.

supertrucker your kind of thinking is the reason this world is so screwed up now days.

What about my rights to bring my children out and not be subjected to butt cracks and pubic hair? This law should also include the low low cut pants girls wear that show butt cracks and hair.

I agree with this law. They may be proud of what their underwear look like but the rest of us could care less.

THANK YOU MANSFIELD, GO GET'EM, HOPEFULLY IT WILL BECOME A NATIONAL LAW. SOMEONE HAS TO TEACH THEM RESPECT FOR THEMSELVES AND OTHERS. IT APPEARS THEIR PARENTS DIDN'T.

That's a violation of human rights, you aren't allowed to tell people how to dress. When will these people concentrate on real business, are they just sitting in their offices just making up things to gripe about. What can we expect next, why don't they work on other issues surrounding the community

Supertrucker 27-Are you stupid or just plain stupid? What does this have to do with the second amendment? The way it looks, you need to go back to school and learn how to spell words, not worry about the second amendment or what it says. Do you really think that anyone would hire a person that is dragging their pants on the ground showing their underwear? What are they gonna say, "You violating my second amendment rights". Get a life and use that stupid head for something other than a duffus hat rack.

Sagging pants definitely isn't my idea of looking good, or being fashionable, but I do disagree with fining people for it. Each workplace and school should enforce their own uniform regulations, but other than that I feel that the way a person wears their clothes should be left up to their own judgement, as long as they aren't exposing any of their private areas. If someone decides to wear their boxer shorts as shorts out in public, they aren't going to be fined for it...so why fine them for being able to see them sticking out of their pants? Is Mansfield going to come up with an entire dress code that each and every person must abide by while being inside city limits? What about the people who are from other areas who enter into their town and aren't informed about this law? Will their be a huge sign posted as you enter the town giving them a fair chance to pull their pants up? I say let them wear their pants low, their chains low, and their morals low if they'd like, to me it's like wearing a sign that says "I'm not someone you would want to know!"

It is a violation of my rights to have to be subjected to seeing other peoples' privates. I think the governments are right. Yes it is a right to wear clothes how you want and it is also a right to be able to not be subjected to indecent exposure. It is called "underwear" for a reason. If someone's rights are going to be upheld, why not the respectable people?

I just read the front page of your paper. I now get why everyone is upset over seeing undies... OMG please get involved with a BIG CITY paper. It is ok to focus on REAL issues. It really is! Supertrucker47 I loved the warning to plumbers in town... I heard it's the tool belt that pulls the pants down but down is down! Right? I noticed no-one seemed to have a comment for you about that. Hum, wonder why they ignored that. One final thing to think about srob- USA is for EVERYONE the self proclaimed respectable people are not the only ones with rights. Thank you. Have a great day.
