What do they make?

Elected officials' salaries vary per postion, community

Published Sunday, December 2, 2007

NATCHEZ — It’s a basic principle of democracy — elected officials are responsible to the voters who elect them.

Therefore, it’s only right Miss-Lou residents should know what their leaders earn.

Elected positions such as sheriff, city clerk and mayor are considered full-time occupations, whereas the position of alderman is classified as part-time.

But responsibilities often broaden beyond what’s in the books.

For example, aldermen’s responsibilities, in Natchez, at least, stretch far beyond the bimonthly meetings. Along with attending planning sessions, each alderman chairs a committee.

“We listen to the citizens of the community and try to react to their needs as far as public safety, being business friendly and trying to build a tax base we can use to make the city better,” Alderman Theodore “Bubber” West said.

West said his role as alderman never stops. He and others are on call 24 hours a day. West talks with his department heads on a regular basis and addresses from concerned citizens.

“The meetings twice a month are easy,” West said.

Although each alderman is elected by his or her ward, responsibilities don’t end where the ward does, Alderman Jake Middleton said.

“Someone may not know what ward they’re in, but they may know Jake Middleton,” he said. “I’m going to get that taken care of.”

Middleton said he spends roughly 20 hours a week, if not more, in his role as alderman.

“It’s a lot more than the public is really aware of,” he said.

Mayor Phillip West said he, too, carries a heavy workload.

“The mayor of Natchez has probably double the responsibility,” West said. “He’s chief operating officer for the city, which basically means he’s responsible for day-to-day operations of the city government. He’s also an ambassador for the community, which takes up a great deal of time.”

For Alderman David Massey, the longer he is in office, the easier problems are to solve. But he’s also more involved.

“When I first started in 1988, people told me it was a part-time job, you don’t really do that much,” he said. “But the longer you’re in, the more you find out, the more you do and the more you’re called on. It becomes more of a full-time thing and part of your life every day than people have any idea.”

Vidalia aldermen make nearly a tenth of their neighbors across the river. But it’s a smaller town, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said.

“Historically, Vidalia aldermen have made less than surrounding communities,” Copeland said. “It’s just been that way.”

Potential earnings have never really been a factor in an alderman’s decision to run, he said.

“I’m sure it’s this way in Natchez, too, but most of the aldermen in the past and present run because they want to contribute to the community,” Copeland said. “In all the years I’ve been involved in politics, I’ve never had anyone who was running ask how much the job paid. It’s a community service.”

So, what do they make? This is a matter of public record.

If the aldermen work 40 hours a week, they make $10.72 an hour. Any fewer hours, hourly rate goes up. At 24 hours a week, $17.87 an hour. It is not onerous work, so they need to work at least 35 hours each week making $12.25 per hour. Do we also pay for their insurance, car allowance, expense sheets?

Looks to me that they make too much for too little. Look how the pay of the aldermen went up over the last few years. Funny, because when the cops go to them for a raise they are quickly told "we don't have the funds for that," or they are told to wait until October and when October comes they are told to wait until May.

It must be nice when you can sit on your duff and vote yourself a pay raise when you want one. And I'm not even going to get started on the judges because I'll end up writing a dossier on the subject. I've come to the conclusion that what the city of Natchez needs in an ENEMA. It seems to me that the only concern that our "leaders" have is to get their own selfish little agendas passed.

--> An ambassador of which community? For a guy who wanted to put "post-it notes" all over the city to put the word out to punks and thugs, he sure seems responsible....

"West said his role as alderman never stops. He and others are on call 24 hours a day. West talks with his department heads on a regular basis and addresses from concerned citizens."

--> 24/7 huh?! Whatever....

there are alot of overpaid people in the city, why is there people making 100k or better. i know my opion dont count on this cause the people in charge just want there pockets to remain fat. they could have set the pay scale different and everyone would be ok. but its like the rest of the world the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor.

The aldermen make more than the police and firefighters...somehow that just doesn't seem fair.

Posted by riverat (anonymous) on December 2, 2007 at 7:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Wow! I didn't realize that the supervisors made that much. Is their job supposed to be part-time...because if it is, they sure are pulling in a fulltime salary. What's th difference in what they do and the Board of Aldermen?

Posted by stormie527 (anonymous) on December 2, 2007 at 7:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Blubber West on call 24/7? Hah! Addresses regarding concerned citizens? Hah! Now the talk part may be true because that is about all he does is talk. I guess the meetings twice a month is easy. I'm sure he is the first one to approve raises for the aldermen and not for firemen and police officers to cover his checks. LOL He always has a comment for the paper, but what have we read that he has done for those concerned citizens addresses and the community?

Heck, I want a job in Adams County!!! Good gracious alive! Did you see the difference between what Concordia Parish officials make compared with Adams County??? That's just sad. Gotta think of it this way....Concordia Parish rates much higher in everything over Adams County, yet the parish pays less. Hmmmmmm. Sounds like a lot of waste in Adams! And they don't do half the job Concordia does! Peter Rinaldi will have a field day on this one! Heck, he probably already knows.

Just a bunch of complainers... You want somebody to go find your jobs, make sure you get fire and police protection, and tuck you in bed too. But you don't want to pay for it. Officials in Tupelo, Southhaven, Pearl, Hattiesburg make more money and guess what the people get what they pay for. I guess we could be like Roxie where the mayor only gets $2,400 a year. Yeah, let's be like Roxie.
Try being the spouse of one of these public officials, who gets call all hours of the night from complainers like the people on this website then tell me its worth it. I could go on....

Just a reminder for all of you Concordia Parish worshippers... Over half of you work in Natchez. Without Natchez, I guess you would be somewhere else - Maybe you should stay over there if you think it is such a great place. Find a job over there and don't come back.

Live my life when we get called constantly and asked for handouts constantly. Oh yeah and tell me its a part time job when he is gone half the time trying to find jobs for other people. Soon nobody's going to want the job and then I guess one of you can have the it - at least it pays well, right? We can't find enough people to run for office now, imagine what it will be in another ten years.

To supertrucker: Obviously you don't have a clue as to what the sheriff does! I do not work for any law enforcement agencies but I do rely on them for assistance and I can tell you that Ronnie Brown is a dedicated, hard-working guy. He serves on numerous boards where his role makes a difference. He is on-call 24-7. So you are truly ignorant on the subject matter of the role of the Sheriff of Adams County and should do further research before posting such comments.

rantnrave-
Since when do public officials find people jobs? That's not what they're elected to do. That's part of the problem with our local city and county government now...positions are filled with "friends" not the best qualified person! And no one made them run for office.....so if your spouse became a public official and now you're unhappy, sounds to me like that's a marital issue between the two of you. Some of us assumed that people who run for office do it to "serve the public" , like Mayor Copeland said. I

>>kpage<< Peter Rinaldi has hit on this subject more than a few times. Altho' many people call him a kook, I have great respect for the man because he calls a spade a spade and does not back off. If he does report wrong findings he is quick to make a recall after the facts are proven. Laugh, make jokes about him or whatever, in my book he is the best watch dog we have in Adam's County. It's not just Peter Rinaldi, but there have been others that have tried to bring the corruption out to be viewed by the public and all they get in return is great criticism and scorn for being a kook. Now we have the Natchez Democrat to help us uncover exactly what Peter Rinaldi has tried for years to do, but no one is laughing or calling them kooks. What gives??? Thank you Natchez Democrat for standing strong on your beliefs and reporting all the injustices and corruption committed by our ELECTED SERVANTS.

I have to ask this question. How many salaried employees are called upon to work extra hours and do not get any extra pay? They are paid for say, 40 hrs a week and end up putting in 60hrs.
So when these politicians say a part time job starts taking up more of their time, I say, that gives them a taste of what their constituents have to deal with on a weekly basis. Plus most of those politicians have a business they run or another job they work at.
An Alderman in Natchez, makes more money In a year, part time, than most full time employees.
Does he work any harder? Does he put in more hours?
And does he run the risk of getting fired if he is unavailable to show up for a meeting?
Even the Coroner makes more a year than the police and firemen. Why?? We KNOW that is a part time job.
So why is it worth $44,715 a year?

rantnrave......Concordia parish doesnt need ur stinking snatchez. The parish and city of Vidalia is further spacing itself from the zoo of Adam's county/ Snatchez. Vidalia now has its own walmart, rubber recycling plant coming in the future, Lowes is a prospective element, doctor's complex on the riverfront. Not to mention the riverfront itself.

i think i will run for coroner i know i have seen more death and mangled bodys. so i think i can handle that it would be a 20,000 dollar raise from the ole PD and i dont have to work as hard or have long hours. HELL YEA thats it, the bonus of the job i dont have to be certified cause it is a elected position. i will say it again they are over paid and the cost of living in natchez aint freaking jackson we are cheap. so lets cut the fat and give raises to the people who diserve them the most, the PD and the Fire Dept. the reason for that is when is the last time you seen anyone in those posisions(with exception of the Sheriff) run after a man with a gun to catch him or run into a burning building to save a kid. they dont diserve it!!!!!

As I have said many times before, to be elected to a public position, should be viewed as an honor and privilege by those elected. Now, to our elected officials, do you really feel like you have earned your salary when you close your eyes at night? Do you perhaps consider you outrageous salary and fringe benefits as fair payment for a job well done? Would you pay someone or anyone what you make to do what you do without complaining that they make too much for their job? Absolutely not! The city and county need to pay more for those that put their lives on the line to serve and protect. There should be a sizable cut from the top right down to the bottom of the totem pole in the public servants salaries...For the sake of humanity, we need to get (real) with this issue. I cannot afford a camp or residence at Lake St. John, we've got lots of elected officials that do, however. Several pay ridiculous dues at hunting clubs, others have other recreational habits that we the people cannot afford. The hand writing is on the wall, they are making too much for the half a_s jobs they do. Wake up and smell the coffee, it's on the burner and boiling over !

I too would like to know what the Sheriff of Concordia Parish makes, even if it is just on paper. I'm sure what he really makes would be an eye opener. Requests by private citizens for public records have met with an "I don't have to give you anything!" answer. RM and his closest cohorts salaries are top secret even though he can give titles and money at will. (To the ones who will.) I don't believe even the FBI could get them. Care to try FBI? Does he have something to hide? What about the Freedom of Information Act? Just wondering.

Maybe the Democrat could use the Lawyers on RM that they used on the City of Natchez, over that illegal closed meeting, to get that info on CPSO salaries. Just a thought, since private citizens can't seem to shake that info out of them.

The salary information is nice to know but are we getting value from each public official. If not, we need to make some changes in the next election or we need to put pressure on elected officials for better performance.

I would like to thank those of you that think that the firefighters and police officers salaries are too low. Time and time again the men doing the work hear that there is not enough money and see dept. heads and aldermen getting raises. I know of a lot of firefighters and police officers have left for more pay. We even had one firefighter leave to go to waste management for higher pay. I am glad to serve the community and I accepted the job of being a firefighter with the knowledge that I will never be wealthy, but I would like to be able to work only one job. I say that elected officials should not get raises unless the raise is voted on buy voters on the ballot. Use the money on the men and women that actually do the work, not the ones that take credit for it!

This is to the wonderful people of Concordiat parish that have posted their sarcastic comments about not needing our jobs in the Natchez area. You had no problem sucking the money and blood out of Adams County for the past 30 plus years that you all drove over here to work at IP and Johns-Manville, did you? But, now that those companies are gone and you can't get your pay check from Natchez and Adams county we are just "stinking natchez". I dont remember you had a problem with the "stink of IP" all those years.
Maybe you need to take a look at yourself in the mirror and realize what an ungrateful piece of "river trash" you are yourself. As for the people from Concordia Parish that actually have some intelligence, you will know this is not directed at you in any way. This is just for the few ignorant ones that love to bash another city that was there to help you for many years.

I don't care how much a person makes, my arguement is are you honestly earning your keep, if so wheres the proof, Natchez is falling apart. No economy, more crimes, and more corrupt officials. I work hard for my money and when I'm finished at the end of the day, whenever that maybe, my job is complete, with nothing sitting on the back burner. So what do we as citizens of Natchez and Adams County need to do, to lite a fire under your <jobs> and see some kinda sign of progress.

This is the story of AMERICA at large. Natchez is just a microcasm of it all! People in politics, from the alderman of a town, to the lobbyist in Washington, all make TOO MUCH MONEY. Anyone following Ole' Miss and what they are paying the new coach? Anyone looked at the salaries of some of your favorite sports celebrities, etc.? No, well you should. All the while, the people who REALLY drive America at its heart, get to scrounge off what they can. They get the dubious distinction of being way over worked, for pennies a day, while they get that over-taxed, poor, ineffective health care, etc.!!! Teachers, police, firefighters, day care workers, etc., are all in the mix. And before you go and say it's the job they have chosen, imagine what life would be like, without these people. No, everyone can't be and "ain't" gonna be, [I know that's bad English] rich, but man, wouldn't it be nice to see the "little" guy, get compensation, commenserate to their jobs and labor?

Posted by firered (anonymous) on December 3, 2007 at 2:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok.. So this weekend the discussion was brought up between me and a few intelligent people I know and we came up with an idea of how to get police/firemen a raise. So everyone pays property taxes right? So why not add an extra $5 every year? Its not a whole lot when you think about how much you are paying already. And that adds up with everyone who pays the property taxes. Anyways.... it would have to be passed that there would be a separate fund solely for this extra money to be put in for either an across the board raise for these guys or a "Christmas bonus" at the end of the year... So give me some feedback on this because to get this in motion I'm gonna need as much support as I can get.. and believe me I am going to be working VERY hard to get this going.

Ok... I think we are all very aware that alot of people bust their butts and don't get paid for it.... There are also those who do very little, get away with it, and get paid more than the ones who deserve it.... That isn't just going on here, it happens EVERYWHERE.... The difference I see here, is these are public officials (and if you don't like it, or your family doesn't, then you should rethink your career choice) elected public officials.... we vote them in, we vote them out.... So who exactly is at fault here???

Posted by luckiestgirl (anonymous) on December 3, 2007 at 8:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ghost - you shouldn't give your opinion speaking for all of Concordia Parish. What did Natchez do to you? I see no reason to be rude.

riverat - one of the jobs of many elected officials is to get new business to locate in the area - that's how they are finding jobs for the citizens.

My only gripe is the full-time salaries for part-time jobs - specifically the Natchez aldermen and county supervisors. They all have full-time jobs in addition to their elected official positions, so it's obviously not a 40-hour work week! And voting them in or out is not going to help. It'll just be another part-timer getting paid too much. But I'm not going to denegrate the full-time people (like some of you are doing) saying they are just paper pushers because I don't walk in their shoes.
