i'm just using examples! animal or human WHATEVER!!! if those dogs were brought up to fight then that's what they were doing! what they were taught! but a human grows up learning right from wrong... choosing to do wrong anyway and still gets away with it! grr!! I used to have dobermans and when my insurance man came to check out my house for coverage the dogs scared him. I had to have a waiver on the dogs to get coverage. Now I have a Lab that will lick you to death.

I own 15 horses, more cats than that, and 11 dogs, all but 1 having been 'rescued' or dropped off by city folks to my place in the country. No dog is born 'bad.' They are taught that way by their owners. My dogs will lick you silly, roll over for a tummy rub, etc. However, I do believe they would protect me against critters - four legged or 2-legged - if they thought I would be harmed.
I love to hunt, but absolutely hate animal abuse of any kind. The clown in the pic is one who should be held financially and criminally accountable for the actions of his dogs.

I am going to get off the path here for just a second. I am going to rant about our Animal Control in Adams County. I called for assistance in getting a wild stray dog out of my fenced in back yard. That area is for my personal pets. A Trap was set and after two days, the trap was taken away empty, with the wild stray dog still in my yard. Then, it got in my house and we trapped it in a room and called for assistance from Animal Control. At which point, I was told they do not enter homes to get animals. Hmmmm... I don't know anything about this stray who makes himself right at home in my yard, even brave enough to enter it. What if this animal carried disease? So here I am without the tools of Animal control left to get this animal out of my home and out of my fenced in yard. So with blanket in hand I throw it over the dog and drag it out my front door. Now yesterday he's back in my fenced in yard. This morning he's on my front steps. You cannot get near this dog he growls and runs. The only opportunity to capture this animal slipped away when Animal Control refused to enter my home and get it. Something needs to be done about an Animal Control agent won’t even pick up a stray when someone else has already done the hard part of trapping it.

That man looked very shocked in this picture....So is it a fact that he fought these dogs or just a man saying he did??? if it's a fact then he needs to pay for that!! Poor dogs are like children and old people in away no way to defend themselves from crazy people...If you hurt a dog my way of thinking is you would harm a child or a old person...You can't be a nice person if you fight dogs....Kinda like that saying if your friend is nice to you but rude to a waitress/waiter they are not a nice person..

Bet he doesn't have a job with Stine's anymore. The look in the guys eyes like a deer in the headlights looks!!!!! So loosing his job, Pretty sure if employed by Stine's? by shirt he is wearing. Loosing his other meal ticket, Fighting Boxer, he will be facing punitive damages from fines, personal law suites and, maybe some jail time!!! I hear fighting dog's is a big game here in the county. Hope this starts a crack down and get this situation out of our county and our State but being a border town, our neighbors across the river, hope this helps you out also.

reb1843 I used to think like you that no animal is born bad but I have seen, owned, and raised pets that for some reason do bite and are mean. It is just in their nature and this can be any breed of dog. Kind of like a horse that kicks all you can do is tie a red ribbon on their tail so everyone knows they kick and look out for it.

Pitbulls should not be allowed in Adams County. They are only good for one thing, fighting. The only people that want those ugly dogs are of gangster mentality. Open season on the pitbulls. If you see one just put a bullet between the eyes. Everyone will be better off for it.

I have to agree that if you know anyone that fights these dogs, you should turn them in. I had one attack my daughter years ago, we ended up in the ER getting a technous shot and stitches (at our expense!). But I do have to commend the Vidalia PD, they did take and quarentine this animal and then he was put down. There has been far too many attacks and deaths on people (especially small children) once they are trained to fight. This should be stopped, but the first step is to hold the owner responsible for crimes committed. Maybe they should be listed in the paper along with the child molesters, so you know if they live in your neighborhoold. I mean really, this is a dangerous situation for families with children. We need to get a handle on this!

As for the person w/ the Animal Control issue. I'd say call 911 and tell them that you have a gun and your are going to shoot this dog. That will solve the situation QUICK.

I HAVE NO PITY FOR THIS MAN. I have a chihuahua and when I walk him I carry a can of MACE AND A KNIFE, JUST IN CASE.

Beam-me-up, I train and show horses, altho' I'm not a 'cowboy.' I find that horses always follow their alpha leader, those they can trust. Horses kick out of fear or to establish pecking order, not out of 'mean-ness.' Same with dogs. Unless they have some inherent mental illness, they are not normally vicious. There are many pit bulls, weimers, rots, etc. that are gentle as lambs. Just my thoughts on the matter, that's all.

What's so sad is that these dogs have gotten a bad name because of owners like Vick and others who have abused them and turned them into monsters. I have a pittbull that I found as a puppy on the side of the road. He was in terrible shape and I just knew he would die but after taking really good care of him, he managed to survive. I really have a soft spot for these dogs and I for one don't consider myself a gangster!! I guessI really feel sorry for them because they usually end up in the hands of some loser that mistreats them and trains them to attack. If you treat your dog with kindness and take really good care of them...for the most part they will not attack...unless provoked. I do agree that alot of pittbull owners use them for their own sick reasons and own so many of them that they can't afford to feed them and these dogs have a pretty big appetite. Now just imagine if you were mistreated, caged, and hungry..How would you act?

It seem to me that everybody in against Vick, for dog fighting. I am will aware that dog fighiting is illegal, but to me it seem that people are more concern about dogs than humans. Vick is not the only person that committed this crime, but because he is black and is a professor football player; he is not the worse person in the world. I am sure if the law would look closer I am sure they would fine some of the other race doing the same thing. Now to respone to the arrest made in this article. I just wonder if the neighbor dogs had attacked Mr. Brunston's dog what would the outcome had been? Mr. Rodriguez is white. We migh as well face it, whether or not we want to admitt to it, RACE is still a major factors in a lot of cases.

I still stand by what I said. Some animals are mean by nature all can be made to be mean if you treat them bad enough. I have had well trained dogs that were mean when I wanted them to be but a few were mean when they wanted to . It is a catchy phrase to say there are no bad animals just bad owners but some are bred for a specific purpose and that is what is in their blood.

genlee i have to disagree with you totaly...i had a bulldog that looked really mean but would not harm nobody...not all bulldogs are bad just because they are bulldogs...i was bite by a dog when i was younger but it was a mutt not even no bulldog in it....if you think all bulldogs should be shot then in that case all dogs should be shot all dogs will bit they all have teeth....a small dog is usually your most vicious they just cant do that much damage cause they arent that big but you dont want them shot...also i think bulldogs are pretty dogs not ugly

You are correct, Vick is being prosecuted because of who he is and what he does but I, as a black woman, am tired of pro athletes, entertainers, and others in the spotlight acting a fool when you know you are in the public eye. Hate is a strong word...I can remember that was one of those words that got my tongue a good plucking. How many of you ever had your tongue plucked..not a good feeling. Pit bulls have been banned from several cities and states, no matter if your hispanic, oriental, black, and/or white, if you own one you are eventually asking for trouble. This breed has always been a very aggressive breed. The truth of the matter is that it occured and actions were taking regardless of race. But, for someone to throw the race card up in this discussion, is nothing more than a racist himself, who is bored with their life and just looking for something or someone to hate. It isn't that obvious to me, sorry. I see people of ALL races being evil in various ways. I do agree that our judicial system is flawed, but I also see our welfare programs being flawed and abused by both white and blacks. This just isn't a race issue. It's just wrong. YA'LL WANT TO KNOW A TYPE OF DOG THAT SEEMS TO BE JACKED UP ON MTN. DEW 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK!! A JACK RUSSELL!! i made the mistake in getting the boyfriend one on one of my trips to NTZ. let me just say i have had my doubts about this dog.. RUSTY, but soo far so good. fingers crossed!! he's still a puppy really but he has now started doing the barking thing while staying on the porch.. This dog is treated better then MOST HUMANS!! UGH! SPOILED TO THE BONE! i just hope we are doing enough to teach him to not bite. :)

It is about time justice is served, this has been a problem in the community I stay in for a while, my neighbor's pit bull attacked my dog, we went to court and I still have yet to get any restitution from it, my dog survived...but he has yet breed and gotten other pits...This is neither a black or white issue, this a people issue...Dog owners should be held responsible for what their pet does...These dogs are dangerous especially when the owners train them to attack...The City of Natchez needs to take this very serious...I have children that stay in this community and I would hate for a child to get attack before this is taken seriously....

I actually was attacked about 5 years ago while jogging behind Parkway and the dog was part pitt and the one bite he got in looked like a flippin shark bite! Tried to sue the lady who owned the dog but apparently because I used the wrong lawyer nothing happened....he only cares when his thumb is yanked off by a hot air balloon....nuff said.

What in the hell is really going on when freaking animals take precedence. You people need to understand that these are animals and no matter how you try to domesticate or think that they are tamed they are animals. Don't get me wrong I like animals as well as the next person but I know how to keep things in perspective. I can think of alot of ways my tax money could be spent instead of wasting time and money prosecuting over a dog. This is ridiculous for real. People you all need to prioritize. If your animals are that important to you move into seclusion and you never have to worry about anything happening to them. Don't waste my tax dollars on non-humans. The money wasted at these shelters could be money spent on babies, children and adults who need shelter; food; medical help. This is a sad time when a dog or cat can see a Dr. before my child can see one because no insurance. You people need to wake up smell the coffee and keep animals in their place in the wild. You hooped and hoolered when Michael Vick was sent to prison...did you know that you now are supporting him cause people are stupid.

If you sue someone in a case like this, you don't need a lawyer. You file in small claims court. Take your police report, Dr. bills, hospital bills and any vet bills, plus any witnesses. You will Be compensated for your loss. The local Clerk of court can help you with where and how much it costs to file. The last I heard was $34.00 and the judge will make the defendant pay that too.

Does the same rule apply to an owner who buys a dog to protect his or her property? I know people who buy dogs and train then to protect their property. So if their dogs so happen get lose someway and kill someone's pet and the article was different, would these comments be the same? They were trained to protect and dog fighters train to fight, but if in both situations an innocent dog, so to speak, is killed, then what do we lose? A dog, right. People train dogs to be mean for more reasons to fight people. I don't agree with dog fighting, because it's cruel and evil in some sort of way; but I just wonder what would be said it this was a pit bull in a suburb, that barked at people as they walked by, and got lose and killed this man's dog? Then what would be said. This is just an opinion. Take it the way you want.

Yes drawpaintsing, if that animal GETS LOOSE, the same law still applies. If however it is in the enclosed yard or business that it is guarding, then no. People can read signs that say beware of dog or this business is patroled by guard dogs. If an animal gets into there, and gets hurt or killed, The owner of the guard dog can not be held liable. Because each person is responsible for keeping their animal in their control.

Just gonna add my 2 cents...I am an avid animal lover as are most of my family members and my son has had 2 pit bulls and you could not have asked for kinder, sweeter more loving dogs. However, he did keep them confined. That is just part of being a responsible pet ower. We have to protect them as well as protecting others who may come in contact with them. It is a crime (as it should be) to fight dogs and the owner should be prosocuted to the fullest extent of the law. Why anyone is surpried at the picture, I'm not sure. Sensationalism sells papers. It just the business.

I was just wondering. It's the principles of this situation to me, not race, nor lifestyle. I love animals as well as I love children. They both have soft spots in my hearts. Ok. I have sat and read EVERY comment on here and I can't believe some of the crap that is on here.

My husband is the pround owner of a "dangerous breed" dog. We have raised him since in was only 6 weeks old. When we got the dog I took him to the vet and asked for some tips on raising hiom to be kind. I followed those tips. You could not ask for a sweeter dog. If you were to walk into my yard today with no one there he most likely lick you too death. A family member has the sisiter to my dog. They couldn't control her so the dog was brought to my house. Since she has been at my house she has completely changed herattitude. It is in fact all in how you handle an animal.
So I think this man should be held accountable? YES! Do I think he should have gone to jail? YES!
This is a very sensitive subject with me. NOONE had the right to miss treat another livng thing.

jammin1 I am only in my opinion stating the way I feel. And I an entitle to that, just look at the cop in the Peterson's case in Chicago and the young lady at JSU. In Chicago this man (killer) is still walking aroung. Now on the other hand the young man in the JSU killing is in jail. Now let me say that is and was good police work. Thank God he was caught and he should be punish. Can't say the same for the Peterson case. Again White and Black, both are dead. Now, as far the dog fighting, Mr. Burnton should replace Mr Rod's dog and pay a fine, but to be jailed is a bit much, remember this is my opinon. The law would rather jailed a dog trainer (with the quickness) and allow a murder(?) walk around and be free. And if my comments send to be the RACE CARD thing to you, please do not read them. Okay I have no problem with you if you don't read them. Again that is your right. Read the Constitution."FREEDOM" to do, think, say, etc. whatever a person wants to.

And it is obvious people are more concern about animals having the best of everything when you have humans (elder, sick) just to name a few don't have food can't buy meds, and fuel to keep warm during the winter months. all the attention is on the animal (dog) and none what so ever is on the less fortunate

A family member found them somewhere in Lousiana. I wouldn't trade them for anything. They are great. And if you remember I have three kids. My kids feed and play with these dogs daily.

We are starting a petition for pitt owners to have liability ins. on these animals and that can not reside in the city limits. for the sake of smaller animals and children, and anyone that can't protect themselves against these animals.
i also hope that the fed. marshall that is here now can make a difference... remember the topic a dog got killed by another dog, it could havebeen a child playing in the front yard of your home. This has nothing to do with race...

When my dogs have gotten lose they haven't attacked any other animals. I live in the country. I am surronded my horses and dogs and cats and even goats. I haven't had a problem.

yes the jury did find OJ not guilty and then the civil court said that he did in fact have some responsibilty for their deaths and that is why he has to pay money to the Goldman and Brown families. Now that is what I call injustice.

Brother 2 Brother..Not a good argument. Those cases are different. Tasha Norman's body has been found and her boyfriend was not formally arrested until her body was recovered. If Im not mistaking..he led them to her body. The Stacy Peterson case is still considered a missing persons case. Drew Peterson has been named a suspect in her disappearance. Just because police suspect someone of foul play doesn't mean they can just throw them in jail without the proper evidence.

Boy, this story really rang home for me. When we moved to Natchez a year and a half ago, we brought with us our chocolate lab mix, DUKE. He was a sweetie, loved to run, and rolled all over the place with our kids. NEVER snapped or growled at them, and rarely even barked when someone knocked on the door. Then we moved here, and the kids from next door and down the road started taunted him daily. They hit him with sticks, shot him with pellet rifles, all because he would bark at them. So, we built him a pen that he stayed in during the day, and we still brought him in at night. These very same kids would wait until we left, and then go taunt and abuse him through the fence, We started noticing changes in him, he was grumpy, would run for the road at the speed of light after anything that moved, and started growling at strangers that came to the house. The vet advised we have him snipped, which we did, but still, he got worse. It got so bad, we couldn't leave him in the pen, he would be so mad by the time we got home, he would be competely uncontrollable. Then one day, he darted out the front door, and attacked a dog that had wandered in our yard. My 11 year old tried to break them up before anyone could stop her, and he bit her. I LOVED my dog, but I loaded him up and took him right then to the vet and had him put down. I drove to the vet with my pet, his head laying on my lap, and drove him home 15 minutes later with him in a box in the back of the van. All because some people teach their children it's ok to abuse "worthless animals"...he was such a sweet dog before we moved here, around these trashy people that seem to have no standards at all...sorry to type a book, but I just wanted to join those that say, it does not matter what breed a dog is, their behavior is based on how they are treated. Duke was a loving pet that loved kids until we moved here where he was continually mistreated when we weren't around. As much as I loved him though, I could not take the chance of him seriously injuring one of my kids, which is why I did the responsible thing, and had him put down. Pit Bulls are no different than any other dog. Treat them kind, and they will be kind. Introduce violence, and they will be violent. Simple as that. My condolences to the poor man who lost his beloved Duke, I'm sure he is heartbroken. :(

I love dogs but I do feel that some dogs are breed to fight or act as attack dogs, whether they are Pitt Bulls or German Shepherds. All of this could have been avoided if the dogs were sufficiently confined or restrained by fence or leash.

When you own a dog, you will love it just like it is a family member. If anything happens to that dog, it tugs at your heart. I feel really bad for Mr. Rodriguez's loss. If Mr. Brunston had been made aware of the threat his dogs posed to the neighbors and other animals, and he did nothing to rectify the situation, he should have been arrested.

We read, all the time, about children and elders attacked, injured and/or killed by vicious dogs. This is a serious issue that really needs to be addressed. I'm glad the Natchez Police are upholding the law and made an arrest. Now, maybe other lax dog owners will act with urgency to secure their dogs, too.

When the day is over and all is said and done, it won't be different. Inmyopinion..No, I don't think the arrest is race related. I believe that owner would have been just as upset had the owners been white and that's because he loved his dog. He was arrested because the man filed a complaint. If he trained those dogs to fight then he should be held responsible. I don’t care if you're Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, etc. I do believe the young man should pay compensatory damages but I don't believe he should go to jail.

We DO have to understand that this is a public forum and everyone has a right to his or her opinion. No matter how bent out of shape we may get at that person's opinion..that's what they believe and you can't change that. Brother2brother is only stating what he feels just like everyone else on the forum.

For instance, some of my family and some of my husband's family weren't to doggon happy with us being married but that's what they felt. My husband lost touch with a lot of family because of me. Now my son is always being asked what color he is and if I’m his real momma. I have a 10 month old and this elderly white lady was saying how beautiful she was. In the end she says, "Her mother must be proud." I just laughed to myself.

Now my husband was blind to racism until he married me. He can tell you some stories of us being out to eat and not being waited on because he was with a black woman. In the beginning we would get bent out of shape about it, no we always do something to really get the person mad..like show a lot of public affection. They hate it..both black and white.

The point I was trying to make to Brother2Brother was that he was wasting time arguing, because Blacks don't understand Whites, and Whites don't understand Blacks. Until we do, there will be racism. I was really trying very hard not to state this. But after I was attacked by so many individuals on the site for my commets, I am go to tell the real truth and I don't care who don't like it. HERE IS MY STORY......

Let me sum of this story. When dogs was unleashed on slaves (blacks) and bit them, hunted them down so they (slaves) could be beaten, killed, and even have their limps cut off from their body. Nothing was spoken about brulality. So what all the fuss about now. What is the real issue, is it becasue the Black man's dog killed the White man's dog or is it really that the two dogs were fighting (although that is only natural).

I have a cat and would be just as angry if he killed her and it's in a dogs nature to chase cats but the dog should never have been free to roam. He was raised to fight so why would'nt he fight? When I get the looks, whispers, stares, etc., I just smile at them because I know the man I'm seeing is a GOOD man, and we were meant to be together.

Brother2brother...I understand where you are coming from. Racism is a big issue in the south...always has been and always will be. Some white people do treat black people differently...but PLEASE do NOT think that all white people are like that.

For every one else...there is only one race, and that is the HUMAN RACE!! Be more receptive of those around you and you will be really surprised at how things will change. All people are different...learn to accept their differences and MOVE ON!!!!

peacerulz How do you know that the dog intenditionally left to roam free. He owner from the picture was at work and may not have been aware that the dog was unleashed or ungated. It seem to be that no one in the community step up to call animal controll. I am don't saying it was their problem but someone could have taken the initiative to contact animal or even contacted the owner.

Apparently, there was an ongoing problem with these dogs. The article staes that the orginal arrest warrant sat on the judge's desk unsigned for three weeks. I think the judge should have to pay for some of the expenses.

Also, the owner was obviously aware that there was a problem. He should have taken a closer look at what he was usinmg to keep the dos restrained on his property.

My point is, 100 years ago there was no mixing of the races at all.... 50 years ago, you could of perhaps even suffered with your life had you mixed races...... today it is even better, so perhaps the race issue will improve as well... I was raised in a very prejudiced family. I was told, as a child, that black people were nasty and that I was never to have contact with them. I grew up!!! I started seeing things for myself, and came to the realization that black people aren't bad...it's PEOPLE that are bad. Not all, but some. My baby biracial...and my dad was furious at me for dating, much less sleeping, with a black man. I let most of his comments go, because he is my father, and I respected him enough to understand he was raised that way. However, I have had to since put him in his place when he makes comments to me. I don't tolerate it at all. He and I are enough alike that he knows now when he has pushed me too far. Now, he doesn't say anything negative to me, about me, or about my child (his grandson) and we are ok.

That's why I think people need to open their eyes and see the truth around them. Yeah, it will challenge every belief that you have held your entire life, but that's life. If you don't learn something new everyday, then you might as well be dead.

My only point to all that post on the Democrat is that there is more than one side to every story. Don't judge anyone based on their beliefs or opinions. Truth..when I was in high school I frowned on it and look at me now. When we learn better..we do better. When Ken first asked me out..I though "H to da no". My brothers will kill me. They use to treat him so bad in the beginning but I gave them a piece of my mind. I started rolling my neck and telling them that he was my man and if they didn't like..I really didn't give a ____. I have a question! If it had been a person who was seriously hurt or killed would it then be justifyable to arrest this young man. BTW-I am proud of this young man b/c he will get up and go to work. Man I have to come in late on this argument.... Well, just to put a spin on this I was bit a couple years ago by a BOXER! I absolutely love Pit Bulls! I know a lot of people who have them that are the sweetest dogs ever! I know one personally that I absolutely love and that dog treats me better than some humans treat me! But I have also seen the bad side of these dogs.. the side where when you walk by their cage they stare at you like they wanna kill you, the side where they fight any dog they can. But I have also seen a Black lab fight and some little mutt mix. Not only pits can be trained to fight any dog can. And just to let you all know I knew of several WHITE people (not in Ntz) who fight dogs. Its not just a black thing. HA HA oh and KAYCE you totally cracked me up w/ your comment about white ppl fighting chickens and black ppl loving chicken! Girl I loved it!

Anyway basically what I wanna say is all dogs have the potential to fight if they are raised that way. Not all Pitts are bad!

Da_n, you can train a rabbit to fight...That's the key word here T R A I N. The pits were trained to fight. When they finished off Duke they ran down the street and put an elderly woman in her house, then they went back up the street and proceeded to get the construction workers. People you've got to get the point here. If you see a pit bull behind a fence and leashed, you better keep your eyes opened in the back of your head. This dog is no PET. He's been abused, starved, neglected and taken out only for training sessions. These particular pits had no shelter whatsoever. Don't you get it, leaving them chained to a cyclone fence out in the elements and throwing a bowl of table scraps to them every other day makes them tough. There's a guy in this very same neighborhood that puts his 6 month old pit on a chain that would pull a mack truck and parades him through the streets, to build him up and make him strong. YEAH, RIGHT!

I personally believe that anyone caught fighting animals should pay the price. I agree that dogs are taught to fight and forced to do so. What happens if this animal would have attacked a child, Brother?? Would you still feel the same way? I think this forum was used as an excuse to rant about racial issues. The fact remains that an innocent animal was killed for no good reason and the owner of the pit bull is to blame!

i strongly have to disagree with genlee in reference to the comment you made about the breed. i own pit bulls and i know i dont affiliate with "gangsters" or have a "gangster mentality" true, if you raise a pit to fight, it will begin to do so at will...but you dont have to assume that the dogs only belong to a certain group of people. if they wanted to completly ban pit bulls from missippi, it would have been done so by now. guess what? the blacks arent the only race with them. by the way...years ago when my daughter was a baby my father in law had a huge doberman and I have to admit it scared me to take my baby over there around that dog, (I am used to poodles OK) and that dog won me over in a few short visits....that was the sweetest dog and would let my baby pull up on him by pulling his hair! ANY breed can be made sweet and ANY breed can be made mean but when it has teeth like a steal strap and you raise it not only mean but to also fight?!! trouble

I have read all the comments and think all of this is a crock of guano. This should be about people being responsible. Train a dog to kill and pay the consiquences when he does!
You have one man who is being responsible by keeping his dogs in a fenced in area. You have another man who has broken the law by training his dogs to fight, then by not keeping these same dogs properly restrained. I myself am a responsible pet owner. My dogs stay in a large fenced in yard. Yet I have a irresponsible pet owners dog in my yard! Animal Control made a very weak attempt to capture it then abandoned me to take care of the problem myself. Too many people in this case were not being responsible for their own actions and an innocent family and dog have paid the price for someone elses incompitance!

My uncle has bleed hounds that attack each other from eating out of its food bowl and he didnt train his dogs to fights... do parents teach their kids to fight? NO but they do it anyways!!! Harold didn't want his dog to kill DUKE or any of the other boxers. But those dogs provoked it some how some way...they are not innocent either. Mr Rod lost his high dollar dog and Harold lost all his dogs even the one that didn't get lose. Think about how this mad feels also not just mr rod.

Duke and Angel never taunted Harold's dogs. You make it sound like Duke got what he should have. What's wrong with you. Too many times, during the summer, harold would leash his dogs and walk them down the street. They'd get close to the Rodriguez house and put them up on the sidewalk. They were on feeder leashes and they would let the pits go to the fence where Duke and Angel were. Now, tell me who was taunted. Get you facts straight before you loose your lips and finger tips.

Brothafroma, if Harold told you he saw what his "puppy" did to Duke, he lied to you. When he arrived at his home, he did not come to Mr. Rodriguez nor did he make an attempt. As far as him or you not knowing what to say, there are no words and I'm sorry just won't cover it. The only by-stander that he spoke to was my sister. She told him that he better chain his d_mn dogs(because they were still loose)and his only reply was, "you can't talk to me like that!" That's how concerned he was about the incident. NO, NO, NO, he did not see what that "puppy" did. He had lots of support from his neighborhood friends that walked around the corner from where they hang. They got a huge chuckle out of it. As hot as it was yesterday, they all wore their hooded jackets, I guess so that no one could take their picture or identify them. No, this is not a racist comment, with the hoods who could tell what color they were.

Kayce - you go girl! I remember when the U of Al. was intagrated and the next year the big annoucement was some white guy getting married to one of the first black students. I was about 14 at the time and thought it was great. My family about disowned me. I have never understood why that should be such a problem. I do however understand truths statements. I too would probably not date or marry someone of a different race, just because I don't want to deal with the problems it could cause. Just call me a coward! lol
There was once a black lab in our neighborhood who was one of the meanest dogs I had ever seen. The kids couldn't walk to the park because they had to go past his house. He would roam the neighborhood and attack other dogs in their yards. Someone shot the dog - I don't know who - but most of us were grateful. The owners were not very nice people, and thought it was funny when the dog beat up on other dogs. The point of all this is to say - any dog can be made to be vicious, some dogs are born to be vicious just like some people seem to be. We all know of parents who raise 2 wonderful kids while the third one seems to be nothing but trouble.
And for those who are worried about Harold - don't be, he was at work today because I saw him there.
Any kind of animal abuse upsets me, just as any kind of child abuse does. Animals and children do not have a voice to tell about it, and if they have always been treated badly, they know no different. Remember to, that Duke was not the only animal to die from this man's abuse. The 3 pits, who in another life may have made wonderful pets, also died.

Brothafroma, I'm the person that was yelling at him, not my sister. The cop told me that I couldn't shout "profanities", she didn't tell me not to yell at him. Now, do you want the rest of the story? But, I guess you don't need it. You must have been there from the start too, and you still sing poor Harold's praises. You most certainly know about the prior incident. Mr. Rodriguez was mad, more than that he was so terribly hurt that this had to happen. Why did it have to happen? Why didn't Harold take the responsibility to do something after the first incident? Why didn't someone suggest to him to keep the dogs in the country or keep them chained. You know what's been going on and you did nothing. I'm sorry for Harold's dogs, they only did what they were trained to do. kill, kill, kill. Bad dogs are owned by Bad people.

and i am just thrilled that herald was at work today, cause poor mr. rod had to drag his self out of the bed to go pick up the remains of his loving dog and family member!!! so thank you Jesus that herald made it to work, what would have stines done without him!!

This is amazing! Although I do not live in Natchez, I grew up there, and have known Johnny Rod most of my life. My heart goes out to him for the loss of his dog. I have two of my own, and would hate for anything to happen to them. I realize this is a forum for the people to express their views, Therefore I would like to express mine. A beloved friend and pet was needlessly lost. Nothing will change that. I hope that time will ease the pain of his loss........

Dogs are like kids. The parents take responsibility for their kids. If a child is continuously truant from school, the parents get in trouble. If a child vandalizes a car, the parents pay. In this case, the owner of the dog is responsible for any damage their dog does.

Before you make a comment that parents aren't responsible when their kids kill someone...just think of it this way. Most parents don't train their kids to be mean or kill anyone, but most pitbull owners love the fact that their animal is probably the most powerful dog. They feed off that power. That's all it is. The owner is responsible and should pay for his dog's actions.

Here's the simple truth on the matter, folks....

Fighting dogs and/or training them to fight is ILLEGAL.

It's illegal because it is a cruel and inhumane practice that causes suffering and pain to living things. Even animals slaughtered for food are required to be killed in the most humane way possible. Why? Because the expectation is that we, as a society, have or should make every effort to act in an educated, enlightened, civilized manner. Dogfighting and animal abuse are incongruent with the goals and standards of an advanced society.

If you are so incapable of understanding additional societal ramifications of animal abuse as to make this a "me and my needs vs. lowly animals" issue, then let me clarify it for you.

80% of all violent criminals (rapists, murderers, serial killers) engage, or have engaged, in habitual animal abuse. Don't believe me? Try looking up "animal abuse" and "interpersonal violence" together on Google sometime.

Most animals that live in homes where domestic abuse of women and children is present, rarely live any longer than two years and usually die due to violence or neglect.

Most dog attacks are committed by dogs who have been raised in an irresponsible or unethical manner - as in, people who want dogs to be either mean, or "mean when they want them to", ignorant of the fact that the dog, while domesticated to function in a pack role with its owner, doesn't make logic or ethics-based decisions the way their human owner does. ANY effort to make a dog aggressive will result in that dog being (at least on occasion) aggressive. It's a liability that the owner takes on when training a dog to behave aggressively for ANY reason, and it's ignorant to think it never will unless you tell it to.

What does this mean to humans? If you DON'T report animal abuse it's going to cause someone, either animal, human, or both, injury at some point. It's like being an accessory to a violent crime. If you don't make animal shelters or welfare organizations a priority, there won't be enough people to come fix these problems when they arise, nor will there be any facility available to handle or take the animals. If you don't neuter/spay your animals and don't intend to breed them (and it's rather pointless unless they are purebred and registered), you're helping to create more animals that may come under the questionable "care" of someone who will do this.

I'm glad to see these people arrested - white, black, whatever.. I don't care. I don't see how people can't understand how telling it is about an individual when that individual mistreats a small creature that's subject to their whim. It's a sick person who does this to an animal, and when the problems that arise from this abuse that extend outward to other people and other animals.. well, they really shouldn't be any surprise to anyone. I wish more arrests like this happened in this county.

I have a degree in animal science (no I do NOT claim to be an expert), in my studies I have noticed that traits like temperment and disposition, can be passed on to offspring. Not all blood lines of the Bull Terrior is vicious. Responcible breeders cull those animals from their blood lines. this is with any animal any breed. I have seen horses that were savages and would stomp you to death, or take a hunk out of you just because you were there and avalible.

If you are intrested in any of the known bitting breeds they you need to go to a REPREBLE (spelling?) breeder, but that is true with ANY breed.

It has to do with handlers as well. you can try and train a dog to fight in any breed, but if they do not have the temperment they will only defend themselves (and quite posibly die in this effort).

Any person that fights an animal has little if any respect for life. Most if not all animal fighting rings are neck deep in drugs too.

Sorry, I had to leave for awhile. notfromntz - I don't even worry about my handicap! With my believe in God, everything in preordained anywhy, so why should I worry! LOL See how easy it can be? I will certainly pray for your promotion, though I am sure you will get one when the timing is right. I can be a little impatient myself, when I pray for something like that it's kind of like, I need it right now, but He has never failed me, even though I have failed Him quite often. And yes, Chihauhaus are quite the fiesty breed. They think they are mini-Pitts! My Pugs on the other hand never do anything but love you. When company comes, they are sure the people came just to see them.

Does racism exist? Sadly yes it does. However, sometimes there appears to more racism in social class than skin color.... Furthermore, multitudes of people use racism as a crutch instead of thriving to be successful.... I am convinced that in this great nation in which we live everyone has the opportunity to excel regardless of skin color or social class. In saying that I am closing with a few quotes from Bill Cosby in reference to the black community.

Well, in saying that, I would like to close with a few quotes from Willie Lynch in reference to the Black community:

Oh give it a break, All peoples are slaves to something or other. If you are a workaholic then you are a slave to work or a mother who slaves in the home for her family, The addict or alchoholic is a slave to his or her addiction. You have people who are a slave to food, money, gambling etc... The difference is some of these masters are leagle and some are not. It is a choice to be a slave or to break free... If you want to sit around on your pity pot and smear the guano over yourself over and over by crying it's a race issue or a society issue yet you stay in the problem and not work on a solution then you have no one to blame but yourself!

For God's sake people--why does seemingly every thread on this forum eventually turn into racial acrimony, regardless of what the article is about? The article was about a DOG attack, folks. Nowhere in its paragraphs do I recall reading anything about race and class. No ethnic group or social class has a monopoly on lowlife behavior. Good morning all! I have on question before I start my work day. So Harold didn't or forgot to chain his dogs, does that make him a bad person? No, I don't think so, but if he did teach them how to fight that is wrong. But that doesn't make him bad? So if a man was in a rodeo and catches a goat or a calf by the neck with his rope and the rope snapped his neck, then is the man on horse bad. Horses are trained to run that way so you can rope these animals and goats and calfs are sacrificed. Dog fighting and rodeo sporting (whatever you call it) are both sports. One is leagal and the other one isn't, but in both sports animals are killed. I don't agree the bad people own bad dogs. I know some who have bad dogs to protect their property. If Harold had trained those dogs to fight and they remained locked up or chained, he wouldn't be the villian. Just so happen a precious pet of someone was killed, and Harold lost his pets also.

I know I am going to get bashed now, but that thought just came to me. I am sorry of the lose of all the dogs. You all have a nice day. Okay? Don't talk about me too bad.

There are well over 400 hundred comments on this article. With great patience I have read them all. I have wasted all this time trying to make sense of some of the opinions, which was a little hard to do, while a great many of them was a complete failure at making any sense at all. Why intelligent adults would sit at their computer and argue as you all have done today is just pitiful. I have had great respect for most of you in the past and have enjoyed most of your comments, but today, you have sadly shown a great deal of complete and foolish idiotic behavior. We are losing many of our posters because of this type of behavior and I plead with you to control yours. Destiny....Thank you for your post of 12:49pm. I agree with you wholeheartedly. This article had absolutely nothing to do with black and white, slaves and non-slaves, whether Harold was a good person or not. I'm impressed that he's said to be a hard working man. This story got out of line from the get go. Harold was arrested as a result of Mr. Rodriguez being bitten in the first incident by the same pits, and how the system did not work too resolve the issue. Had people responsible, done their job, all of this could have been avoided, we'd still have Duke and Harold would still have his dogs. The one comment that I will stand firm on is that Harold and Eric's' dogs WERE NOT pets. Thank you for reading all of these posts so patiently. I'd like to meet you some day.

Don't really care if you enjoyed reading it but those are the facts, whether 1700 or 2007 -- some things have still remained the same. There are some things that are more complex and not as superficial as people want to make it seem.

It appears the posting of Willie Lynch's comments put a stop to what was a tit-for-tat that transpired almost all day yesterday and spilling over onto this morning. That was my intent -- to put a stop to it. I DID IT FOR SHOCK VALUE, and it seems to have worked, or at least for a little while. Or, maybe some of you have spent the remainder of the morning researching "Willie Lynch" to see if I was making up all this stuff.

There is SO MUCH wrong with ALL OF US . . . "let he without sin cast the first stone", right?!?!?! I've read all the comments posted on this article, too. Lots of demeaning and stereotypical comments coming from a bunch of you. You know of whom I am referring.

It was just a fly in my ointment this morning when I woke up to it. My comments were not pertaining to slavery, that's not even close to why I posted the statements made by Willie Lynch. However, there are those of you, on this forum, who chose to throw Bill Cosby's words out there in this "holier than thou" manner, almost every time there is an issue involving wrongdoing with a Black American. And you do it maliciously.

You folks who post Bill Cosby's comments don't give a rat's a$$ about what's going on in the Black community. You only want to add fuel to the fire while you hide behind your fictitious names here on this forum.

I consider myself to be a very open-minded, fair and rational-thinking person but I'm passionate about my people. People who attack me or the Black community without just cause or in a vicious way will probably hear from me. So, if that makes any of you uncomfortable, so be it. However, you can save your tongue-lashing for your kids. Admonish your kids or those you can control. Admonish those who bicker back and forth and call each other all kinds of names on these forums when you're discussing issues that are going on in your little community -- who murdered their mother, who was the drunk driver, who shot who, who is bipolar, who is the meth and drug addict, who is a wife-beater . . . it goes on and on and on . . . happens almost every day. However, I haven't heard you complain about their embarrasing and childish behavior. Or, better yet, hold your own tongue when you get on here a strongly state your case in whatever fashion and manner YOU choose.

Just like so many of you, I don't mince my words and I don't feel that I have to pacify anybody. I am who I am and I mean what I say -- like it or not!

You know I had something in mind to write, but I don't think I really want to touch this. The article is about dogs who are now dead, people who could have prevented it, and everyone has an opinion. I would really like to know why race is brought into everything. I have NEVER attacked the black community. But you ijohnson, seem determined to attack all white people. Who the hedouble l is Willie Lynch and why should I care? I even harbor doubts that Bill Cosby wrote the article that is so often quoted. But whoever wrote it has a lot of truth in it, not only for blacks but whites. ALL our young people need to know how to communicate, dress, and get along with others of all races.

OBITUARY : "Duke" 4 year old family pet of Johnny Rodriguez, attacked, mutilated, and killed at his residence Dec. 5, 2007. He was loved and cherished by his human family and by his companion and playmate "Angel." The Rodriguez home will never be the same. Duke was a gentle loving boxer. Always curious but never aggressive. He would greet you at the door with sniffs and licks. He came to the Rodriguez home underfed, neglected, and starved for attention and kindness. That's just what he received. He stayed by Johnny's' side when in the house, he slept next to Johnny every night. He was devoted to his master. He rode around town with Johnny and Angel. He went to card games with Johnny, and enjoyed getting more attention and goodies from all those at the game. He was much, much more than just a dog. He was a member of this family. Why did he have to die so violently? Why did the Judge not take care of business as he was elected to do? All of this could have been avoided. I cannot let this wonderful pet have died in vain. At this time, legally, he is considered a piece of property. A television is property as is a refrigerator, etc. That kind of property does not respond to affection and does not return affection. DUKE wasn't just a dog or property. Steps are in process to see that incidences like this can't happen anymore. Suppose this had been a child, grandchild, or an elderly person. Then what? This was more than a leash law violation.

I've got to run!! I need to go pick up my sister's Scottish Terrier, Prince, from the groomers and dog-sit for the weekend! But he's a cutie . . . a big baby. Keeping him and Trina, my Llasa Apso, apart just wears me out. She tries to tear him to pieces if he comes too close to her back side. He's black, she's white -- he's a Scottie, she's a Llasa Apso -- we don't want any cross-breeding going on here! //(*_*)\\

I do feel sorry for Mr Rodriguez. I know my dog turned 7 years old on the 4th of this month. I feel like, in a way, we have grown up together. He is a part of my family. I would be devastated if something happened to him. I would never wish that on anyone. I thought the obit for Duke was very nice.

The level of emphasis and attention that people, and nation as a whole can put on something as overly simple as dog fighting is amazing, as opposed to some of the other situations that have come to pass. Its obvious that people can treat animals better than other people in some cases. Heres a little something to help you all understand what Im getting at here.

Remember yesterday someone posted a comment about the Chihuahua being "fisty" but they meant "fiesty"!! Then, somebody took it a ran with it -- it became a joke about a fisty man behind beaded curtains in an adult bookstore or someplace. T-o-o funny.

I think quite a few of them are too full of themselves -- that's the problem! They need to loosen up the fist a little bit.

brother2brother I really hope that you just suck at typing, if thats how you honestly talk you need Hooked On Phonics. This is about dogs not race. Not to change the subject, but did anyone hear of the wreck on 61 N. this afternoon. It involved Supervisor Spanky Felter and another man. What I heard is that the other man crossed from one lane to the other in front of Felter and was hit. I saw the wreck but didn't know who was in it until later. I would guess Felters truck was totaled - don't know about the other vehicle, don't know if anyone was seriously injured.

No margaret95...We can't let it go...This ball has got to keep rolling...If this fades away, we've accomplished nothing. We need animal cops like they have in Miami. We don't have anything close, but, we've got to start somewhere. Support the local Humane Society. Keep your eyes open. If you see anyone keeping animals that you feel is abusing, starving, and fighting them, it's your responsibility to call the authorities. This must stop.

The wreck was about 3:30 because I was trying to get home so my son could use my truck to go to work as his car is having some problems. Don't know why the Democrat didn't pick it up since it involved a supervisor.
Brod - I would love to be an Animal Cop! Abuse of any kind makes me soooooooo MAD! I volunteered for the CASA program once, for abused kids. I was asked what my reaction would be if I was told by a judge that one of the kids had to be returned to their home, with the abuser still there, and shooting the abuser was NOT one of my options, I decided that I could not deal with that scenario.

Just to let a few people know pit bulls are not an orignal breed they were created from a bull terrier and a mastiff these animals were bred like this to fight bulls and bears in a ring in the early 17 hundreds. what a person uses them for today depends on that persons morals
