Man hit by car, killed
Published Sunday, December 9, 2007
NATCHEZ — A local man was killed after a vehicle struck him Saturday night.
Anthony Merrick, 46, 120 Crown Court, was killed when he was hit by a 1997 Nissan Altima driven by Pamela Blackmore, 709 E St., Woodville.
Natchez police responded to the incident, which happened at the corner of Lynda Lee Drive and Old Washington Road, at 10:40 p.m., Chief Mike Mullins said.
Blackmore was returning home from dropping off a family member at work when she struck Merrick, who was wearing black pants, a black hat and a black and purple sweater, Mullins said.
The incident was accidental, Mullins said.
“It was dark in that area, and she didn’t even realize he was there until she hit him,” Mullins said.
Blackmore immediately went to a nearby relative’s house and called the police, Mullins said.

I hate that area. There are always people trying to cross the streets, usually young teens.

Such bad news at this time of year particularly for the family to contend with.

How sad! Was it a hit and run? Although I understand them not printing the person's name, if known, there are so many questions surrounding this. Maybe this is just a preliminary report by the Democrat.

People need to wear bright colors if they are going to be walking the streets...I was coming through vidalia the other night and there were 2 look to be about 15 years old it was about 11:30pm had nothing on but grey and black...
God bless these families....

This is so sad. I hope that the person stopped no matter who was at fault. Maybe we'll get an update from The Dem today.
Anybody ever find out whether Spanky Felter was in an accident???

I did find out about Spanky Felter. Actually it was his 16 yr old son - who is also known as Spanky. But we usually call him Little Spank, so when I was told it was Spanky, I assumed (the bad word) that it was the supervisor Spanky. No one was injured, but the truck Little Spank was in was badly damaged.

Hello, everyone! I am the niece of the victim, he is my dad's brother. And I would like to thank everyone who sent out their prayers and condolences for my family. He was my grandmother's first son, so for everyone who showed concern, THANK YOU!

Two victims. The poor girl will always remember that sound. She is to be commended for reporting it and not running away. My prayers will include them and their families.

a neighbor of ours way back when.. hit and killed a child that came rolling down a cliff on he's bike.... the child was playing in a dangerous area... the neighbor just couldn't bare to ride that street anymore! so they packed up, sold what they could and have never been back...

someone I know hit a child who rode a bike out into the street from between two cars. No time to stop. He was not permanently injured, but sounds and certain areas of town, and she starts talking about it again.

I pray that Mr. Merrick will be spending this Christmas with Jesus. I suppose God wanted him home for the holidays. >>laydiejay<< I know the grief will be great, but I also know God has a way of healing the pain of the passing of our loved ones and replacing the grief with wonderful memories of them. God bless your family during their bereavement. Please accept God's will for He must have some other work for your uncle and please accept His healing Grace.

My prayers and condolences go out to BOTH families. I am sure Mr. Merrick will be missed and just as others have posted, thumbs up to Ms. Blackwell, for reporting the accident. No one ever wants to have to experience this.

My prayers go out to all affected and involved..... I witnessed a van hitting and killing a transient attempting to cross the road. I still hear the sound of it in my head. I was outside very close to the accident. I could see it and hear it. I will pray for all of you.

Everyone, please remember to be safe. It never fails that this time of year brings a multitude of tragedy. This is just one of several horrific accidents. Remember to buckle upa nd drive safely. Those who are on foot remember to be visible.
God bless everyone who will suffer from this situation.

Is it just me or could the ND have found a better picture to use? I think it is kind of disrespectful to the victims family to publish this picture! I would be very upset if it were one of my family members.

I was thinking that too... myo....... gave me chills just, like the body in the blanket that had been shot 30 times....

It's too gory for the families. Sometimes when they show things from a crime scene it's kind of understandable but this is a little much. It's really moving when you look at the faces of the men in the pic though. They all look really sad.

My aunt was ran over several years ago and the democrat posted a pic of her shoe close up and the site of the accident in the background. Let me tell you I fought all day long to hide that dang paper from her husband and kids. One of her sons came home with it however when he got into town and was IRATE! Let's just say whoever took that pic and published it got an earful from a VERY upset family. I've always thought they should be more considerate when posting pictures in the paper.

This should not have happened! People walking at night need to wear bright colors, please! And make their presence known in all possible ways when walking around on the streets! This is a tragedy.

Several years ago when the river was low they had some kids (young adults I guess actually) who decided to swim it and one boy drowned. They showed the picture of the firemen pulling him out of the water. That was really bad, and I know that at that time the editor of the Dem. said that they would be more sensetive about what they show, but I guess that didn't last long did it?

Oh, that's awful to show a drowning victim. Geez, have some class.

i have been looking at that picture almost crossed eyed! and i just don't think there is anyone under that blanket... it's too smooth, but i understand where every one is coming from. a lil respect should be shown.. i just don't see how some one can be under that blanket..

buttercup i think the angle of the pic makes the stretcher look shorter than it really is.
