THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT

NATCHEZ — A vehicle on Dumas Drive was shot at roughly 5 p.m. Monday, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

No one was injured, and no other property was damaged, he said.

Officers found a vehicle with one shot in the bottom of the driver’s door, one in the hood and one in a headlight.

Two individuals were in the car, and the two suspects were on foot, Mullins said.

“The driver was present at the scene (when officers arrived),” Mullins said. “The passenger ran away, probably because we have four outstanding false pretense warrants on him.”

Police have identified the two suspects involved in the shooting and are looking for them, he said.

Dumas Drive, another place to stay away from! Glad there were no injuries in this one.

I thought Chief Mullins said our streets were safe???Just when are the city officials going to wake up & try to correct this problem?I think the Aldermen should donate half of their salary back to the city to hire more patrolmen.

At this rate, the only safe streets in Natchez will be...................the ones heading out of it!

This is such a sad place to live in. I was coming down the street when this happened,if I had been a few seconds earlier, I may have been shot. God help me to get out of this neighborhood!

I remember some years ago, this guy...I can't remember his name now, but he was driving up St. Catherine in his pick-up truck and got shot and killed. He was young, about 20ish and his wife had a new baby...I think.

I've heard about that as well Peace. My mom tells me about it all the time to keep me from driving on that street but its the easiest route for me to get to work from my house. I do feel very very uneasy as I go down that road.

I grew up in that neighborhood!!! My grandmother still lives there..she is set in her way and will not move.

Dumas Drive is behind the middle school on MLK. I think you turn off Wilson Box Rd. onto Dumas and it runs behind the school. Lots of kids live back in that area.

If I'm not mistaken, Bartley was shot by two kids while driving down St. Catherine St. The scars are still there on a green highline pole on the right side of the street where his truck struck.

When the citizens of Natchez wanted to attend the alderman meeting where crime would be the topic of discussion our city "leaders" decided not to make the meeting public. After this meeting the "leaders" decided that the solution of the the growing crime rate is to have the police WRITE TICKETS. ASININE, ASININE, ASININE!!!!

Yes folks!! This is how our "leaders" decided to fight crime. Any rookie patrolman or citizen who has seen an episode of DRAGNET 1968 will tell you that this won't work, but this is what we are stuck with. The way that the city decides to "fight crime" is pathetic, moronic, laughable and downright stupid. But it does make revenue for the city which is what the goal was in the first place. So get ready for more shootings, burglaries, robberies and homicides.

You want to solve crime? Send the cops into the neighborhoods and contact people, form relationships with the general public, LISTEN to the people on the street because they KNOW what's going on. Stop handing out "probation" like government cheese to criminals and you might be suprised of the outcome. Now this is my opinion of what should happen, will anybody listen? Nope!

I realize that living in Natchez/Vidalia/Ferriday isn't the greatest.....but as far as crime goes, you guys have it great. Try living in New Orleans, Memphis or Detroit.

It looks like crime is up since the summer of 2005 when part of New Orleans moved up here. I would like to see law enforcement put out some stats so we can see.

I live in this neighborhood. It's sad, when the police is called, they only ride through the neighborhood. When will it stop? When an innocent family member is hurt or killed.

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on December 11, 2007 at 8:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

James you say that as if Vidalia has no crime or shootings. Wasn't it not too long ago that a teen or very young adult was arrested for shooting at or into a house in Vidalia? And wasn't it not too long ago that there was a gang thang going on in Vidalia between the east gang and west side of the highway gang, or something like that?

Seems to me that anything happening on this side of the river, or the Vidalia side, affects both sides of the river.

The people of Natchez would be amazed at what one person could accomplish if they did not turn a blind eye to what is going on around them.
I have successfully convinced folks that in front of my home is not a good place to conduct their illeagle business transactions. I simply stated to the young man across the street who was hanging around with some rather shady characters who were carrying on business in front of my house that I was a recovering addict and that I would do what was necessary to stay clean and that anytime I suspected that his friends were conducting business in front of my house or near by I would call the police. After a few times of me comming out with my camera and sitting there on my front porch and taking pic's of cars that stopped, they have moved on and no more business is conducted on the street in front of my home. I realize this did not stop them from conducting business elsewhere, but if more poeple did what I did, well pretty soon there would be nowhere safe to conduct business.

Jasoninmemphis...you are correct..I went to school in New Orleans and now I live in Jackson. I would LOVE the amount of crime that Natchez has.

LdyBreez..I like what you did..More citizens need to step up, especially if you have kids and you are trying to raise them in the right way. You dont want them to see that type of activity going on in front of their home. When I was younger and lived in Maryland Heights, my grandmother had no fear. She would call the police, give names, and didnt lose a night's sleep. She always said that Jesus would protect her and it didn't hurt that she had a 9mm and knew how to use that bad boy too!! LOL!!!

Maryland Heights and Cambridge Heights are subsidized by taxpayers. Maryland Heights is under the Natchez Housing Authority. Cambridge Heights is privately owned and subsidized by HUD-Section 8. According to Federal guidelines there should be some evictions. This unlawful activity is not to be tolerated. All dwellings on Dumas Drive are in one of these complexes.

Legend, I remember this area when my parents and I moved from Detroit, Michigan, back to Mississippi and it WAS NOT the disaster it is today. I remember that location as one where hard working blacks lived and they each knew and looked out for their neighbor, as if they were family. I rode through there just a couple of days ago and all I could do was shake my head in pity and in disdainment. It's a shame, how all over America, HUD and any other housing authority, do NOT monitor activity going on, in these community dwellings. Their feet should be held to the fire!

Teach4Peace..you are right. This area was nothing like it is today. It was a nice place to grow up. I LOVED it. We use to have sooooo much fun. I still keep in touch with a lot of my friends that grew up with me in Da Heights and we often talk about how much fun we use to have as kids. My friends from school would always want to visit me because it was such a kid friendly neighborhood.

Where are these flags being stolen? At home or at the restaurant?

Also speaking of crime, I heard today the Harold the pitbull owner has more dogs already. I also found out that the only way to arrest some of these people is to catch them fighting the dogs. Lookouts are set up to watch for any strangers coming into the area and all those involved in the fights disappear quickly. And, not surprisingly, dog fights mean big opportunities for drug dealers.

If they'll send Vick to prison they'll surely send some small-town guy. And he won't be in the facility that Vick will be in. They may not prove it but they can stop him. What's he gonna do when they watch his every move? Figures he's got more dogs already.

Yes, I am a pet lover, namely cats! Each time I have had one, they grew very old with me, and could go no further, but they were my family. :)

I hope my cat grows to be old. She was an "accident". Found her outside while living in a complex. She was so little and hungry and scared and needed someone so badly. You should see her now. Living the good life spoiled rotten. I love her to death.

Well, spoil her! Kudos to you for seeing that she did need a good human to see the need in her, take her in, hopefully you will also make her fat!!! I love fat roly poly cats! :-}

Teach, I have 9 of the little furry beasts. One lives inside and the others are all barn cats - but I feed them all 2x a day, take them to the vet for checkups, and love it when I'm outside and they come "help" me plant and garden! They are such sweeties! Mean old husband won't let me keep them all inside - they could sleep in my bed and he could use the couch!LOL All of them were thowaways who showed up - 2 were even preg. when they arrived - but all are spayed/neutered not.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on December 11, 2007 at 3:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

oops - that should have been now they are all spayed and neutered!

Listen Freedom42, don't worry, you are NOT alone on this housing issue. I got married not too long ago, and my hubby immediately upon meeting, said NO pets in the home! :-{ So what I have done is take my love for animals to the pet shop here. I go there when I get free time, and hug all the cats and dogs, who will allow me. They love the touching and the interaction. Beats being couped up in a cage all day, with no one to play with them.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on December 11, 2007 at 3:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mine's spayed too. If she can get fat i'm sure she will. freedom that's sweet of you to take in all of those cats.

Good going on getting them "fixed." Far too many pet owners are irresponsible, and don't do this, creating the problem of unwanted animals.

I had to leave for awhile and go for a walk across the river. Coming back we came upon a wreck at the corner of MLK and Franklin. Guess what policeman was working the wreck!? Mike Mullins - our Chief. Don't ever tell me the man doesn't do anything! Stopped and spoke to him as we have known him a long time, and he said the wreck happened almost in front of him so he kind of had to stop.

I'm thinking of moving to Texas....way north Texas where the prices for homes are low and their crime is also low. I used to love the fact that Natchez had such a low crime rate and now!! Well nuff said.

The flags were stolen while the car was parked at home, in front of the restaurant, at the mall, and while sitting at the long light on Canal Street...............
