NATCHEZ — The Huntington Hounds couldn’t stay with Trinity’s pace.
Trinity downed the Hounds 71-25.
“We have been one of the top four teams in our class in the state in nine of the past 10 years,” Trinity head coach David King said. “We flew under the radar for football but everyone expects us to be good in basketball.”
Trinity used their speed and athleticism to run the court and build a 46-13 lead by halftime.
“We were getting out physicaled and out hustled tonight,” Huntington head coach David Boydstun said. “We struggle handling the ball and other teams know it.”
Trinity had three players in double figures. Matthew Freeman led the Saints with 17 points followed by Parker Brumfield with 14 and Jordan Dossett with 12, all by 3-pointers.
“We are getting better each and every day,” King said. “We usually start slow because of football but I think we have come out faster this year.”
King said defense was key to their success.
“We are strong defensively,” he said. “Right now, we are holding teams to around 25 points per game. Defense will win us games.”
Even though he watched his team get beat by 46 points, Boydstun was optimistic about the season.
“We are trying to get better,” he said. “We’re still looking for that right combo that works for us.”
Trinity girls 58, Huntington 58
The Trinity Lady Saints rode the hot hands of Brandy Hall and Molly Butts.
They defeated the Huntington Lady Hounds 58-35.
Trinity head coach Melanie Hall said her team played according to their team motto.
“Our motto is play hard, play smart, have fun and give god the glory,” Melanie said. “We did that tonight.”
Brandy hit four 3-pointers in the first period and Butts added six points in the second period to the Lady Saints up 34-19 at halftime.
“Our fundamentals were much better than the first time we played them, Melanie said. “We rebounded much better and made (Huntington) work for their shots.”
The Lady Saints out scored the Lady Hounds 24-16 in the second half.
“I’ve told my girls that I’m blessed to be their coach,” Melanie said. “I’m proud and I believe in them.”
Butts finished with the game with a team leading 17 points and Brandy finished the night with 16.
