Santa parade to journey through town
Published Saturday, December 22, 2007
NATCHEZ — The Santa Claus parade will make its 79th journey through Natchez on Monday.
Since its beginning in 1928, the Santa Claus Committee has had one objective; making sure all children have a wonderful Christmas, President of the Steering Committee Johnny Byrne said. The committee was formed when Chancery Clerk Walter Abbott and a group of businessmen became concerned that not all the children in the Miss-Lou would have a merry Christmas. What grew out of that small idea has now become almost larger than life with the small group of businessmen now extending to over 300 members.
“It’s something special and people enjoy it,” Byrne said. “We get to help children who might not have a good Christmas.”
Each year the Steering Committee, made of members from the Santa Claus Committee, gets together and chooses a member to become ‘Santa,’ and the nomination is announced in December. At the end of the year, dues are collected from each member and are given to local charities. In the past five years the committee has expanded its donations to the Sunshine Shelter, The Christmas Tree Fund and the Humane Society. Each year nearly $14,000 is raised and divided among the charities.
“We also use special circumstances to donate money,” Byrne said. “Two years ago we gave money to Hurricane Katrina relief.”
Monday the parade will wind through Natchez honking horns and throwing candy, but they will also make more serious stops.
“When we stop at Braden or the Children’s Home it is hard to find a dry eye when we are helping a child,” Byrne said.

I would like to take this time to thank all the people who give of their time and money to help others. The people who are always negative and have bad comments about others and do nothing but gripe and complain should look at how little they do to help. Everyone should thank these buisness men instead of downing their efforts. I for one am always looking for the good and try to say and treat others the way I would like to be treated. This should be a time for everyone to see the good these buisness people do and try to follow their lead. I hope everyone can get over their anger and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR and help those who are not as fortunate as us.

This is a Christmas parade? More like Mardi Gras.

So who is Santa this year?? Neither article about this said who he was.

there is no anger ((vlady)) and i'm sorry but i don't think i would be one to follow the LEAD that these men make on this given day! maybe they do this outta the goodness of their hearts and i thank them for that... but for this one certain charity helping they do. they could refrain themselves of the sipping on alcohol long enough to do what they are there to do... then after go and DRINK TILL THEY FALL ASLEEP! lol as far as us doing our part.. well me doing my part.. i do what i can. a present here or there to a charity a dollar every time i walk by the people ringing the bell in front of walmart, etc.
i just can not see the good in a bunch of tipsy men riding around through town putting SOBER citizens in harms way.. (it's only a matter of time before one drink too many causes an accident from this bunch)

So they have a little fun while they're helping the kids. What's wrong with combining fun with philanthropy??

thank city employees as well. they volunteer to move the presents to braden school to be given out

try telling ppl they can't drink on Christmas Eve and see how far you get. esp. Catholics. lol. i know. i grew up with priests coming over for Sunday dinner and they always had cocktails with my parents. no telling how many they had after making all of the rounds.

What about the open container law???OH I FORGET , our law officals get an ok to SKIP that law on this day....but of course its only for guys riding in parade to drink and drive with open jugs of liquor in ther autos.....What would happen if they had a wreck and killed someone....Maybe the board of alderman coud be sued,,,on my no wait that means us , the citizens, would have to pay ther bill.GOOD GRIEF CHARLIE BROWN

Ok, I've re-written my reply about 5 times. We've had this conversation before. If you don't agree with the way this is done, don't participate. As I said the last time this topic was discussed, not all of the men drink. WOW Peace, not even all the Catholics drink ...... imagine that....(yes, that was meant to be sarcastic.) Unfortunately, there are those that go overboard. But that is every day, in lots more instances than this one. buttercup, if I remember right, you were forced to go to this party while a young child to get presents. Sorry you had a bad experience with it, but there are some who cherish those presents and the time someone takes for them. Some kids don't even have that kind of opportunity. Hopefully the ones that drink too much and make asses of themselves will read these posts and change their ways. For everyone else, they are to be commended for making the holidays a little brighter for needy kids.
By the way, buttercup, the Morgantown, Montebello and Roselawn subdivisions are far from being Beau Pre. Did you not read the parade route??? Most of the neighborhoods they go thru are the lower to middle class ones. I know, I live there, ha ha!!

My wife told me that this parade is usually a drunkfest. I guess that's why there are lots of references to drinking.
Where do I sign up? ;)

Nope, I didn't jump on everybody, I responded to negative remarks made. (which is pretty much what most of these posts are) I said the ones that drink too much and make asses of themselves. Definitely not saying all of them do. And I said Lower to middle class, as in not like Beau Pre........ People put their negative remarks on here, put people down, then get mad when someone takes offense. I've told people I know (that drink while in the parade) that I think SOME of the men drink too much when they ride in that parade, and I also know many that participate that don't drink at all and some that have a drink or two at the last party.
My main point is : It's just not fair to lump everyone that participates into the same category......

>public intoxication is illegal no matter on what day it occurs. Especially around young children. I don't see where this is mixing "fun" with philanthropy. It should be outlawed. If they want to do something for the kids and make it a happier day for them then they should stay sober. That would be the best gift they could give.
Posted by msfixit (anonymous) on December 23, 2007 at 5:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Peacerulz, your experiences with cocktail drinking priests must have been more than 20 years ago or somewhere other than here. The last 2 pastors, and their combined tenure has lasted since 1987, are both the most abstemious of men when it comes to alcohol. Let's not tar everyone with the same brush.

I sure wish I knew what I had missed with all the deletes! lol
You guys better behave or Santa won't bring you anything.
As far as the drinking, well I know even some Baptists who drink too much occassionally. It's a bad thing to overdo anything. As several have stated, don't lump everyone together. When I was a kid growing up on Pine St. (now MLK) I loved the Santa Claus Parade, but fortunately I never had to go to the downtown Christmas tree to get my presents. Looking back, I can see it was probably a close thing some Christmas's. OK Notfrom - what is Festivus?

You know, with all the hot cocoa and cookies Santa will be having tonight, something a little stiffer may be what the Dr. ordered to prepare him for his cold and icy trip. The Santa parade is composed of merry men spreading good cheer and gifts to those along their route. No "bah-humbug" from me. I think what they are doing is wonderful and exciting for all the children. As for us older adults, it makes us stop and remember when we were kids and how exciting it was to see Santa before he began his Christmas Eve route. I remember the Santa parade when I was 5. It made me feel special to think that Santa really did know me and knew where I lived. Christmas and the Santa Parade has the ability to bring the "kid" out in all of us.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and to all a GOOD NIGHT !!!!!!!!

Oh, and by the way!!!!! This mall is a NIGHTMARE. Esp. Belk's unfortunately. Not all are bad but the majority of the employees act as if they'd rather be hung than work. There's a LARGE woman behind the Women's Fragrance counter that will look at you like you are crazy for asking her anything. She even tried to pass off Pure Poison perfume as the original, which they were out of, and if i had'nt known better she would have let me buy it. She behave's like she has NO INTEREST IN ANYTHING PERTAINING TO HER JOB. She wears enough makeup for ten circus clowns to sell makeup. Shes' the rudest "person" i've ever come across in any place of business. I LEFT THE MALL FURIOUS BECAUSE OF THIS VERY, VERY, RUDE CREATURE.

all mine said waS ((DDSMITH) THANK YOU!!
yes, drunk or not drinking or not these men are taking time out of their life to spread a lil Christmas to ones that need it.. (most that sit there in that auditorium don't need it) i know b/c i was one of the kids that was made to go and get presents that were not needed in our house, when they could've have been given to that one lil kid that didn't get a 'goodie bag' b/c the last one was given to my greedy free loading parents.. (that's in the past I'M ENJOYING TODAY! LOL! SO don't think i was looking for sympathy!)
so, for these men who are doing this parade thank you for taking the time... just be SAFE!

Peace, don't let her bother you. Some people are just bitter people. I don't think it matters that they are at work today...she is probably bitter all year round.
Go back and be nice to her. You might get a smile out of her by kindness.
It will be another Festivus miracle.

lol @ notfrom. if i were to witness this "person" being nice, it'd be a miracle for sure. she's got the biggest chip on her shoulder that i've ever seen. this is a sad excuse for a mall and i really can't see why they cannot hire ppl that actually do their jobs and help ppl. in most mall's the employees do everything possible to help you and are very friendly. NOT HERE. they don't even care if they sell anything or not.
HAPPY FESTIVUS TO EVERYONE. LOL
