Sorority brings good cheer
Published Saturday, December 22, 2007
NATCHEZ — The Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. helped the Natchez Children’s Home celebrate an early Christmas.
Delta Sigma Theta Natchez alumnae chapter is a public service sorority, so when their 2008 debutants wanted to celebrate Christmas, they chose two combine two of their favorite things.
“We do what we can for the community and for the betterment of this town,” Delta Sigma Theta President Berthenia Rose Jackson said.
The sorority completes over 35 hours of community service annually, and their debutantes have completed even more. In order to be presented in May, each debutant has to complete several community service projects. So far the group of 22 debutants have adopted the Stewpot, Habitat for Humanity and painting the Boys and Girls Club library, just to name a few.
So it was not a hard decision to celebrate Christmas with the Sunshine Shelter. Each member of the sorority bought a present off of the Sunshine Shelter’s wish list.
“They are going to have a wonderful Christmas,” Vice President Tena J. Payne said.
The shelter was equally appreciative of the special occasion.
“I really appreciate the gifts and comradery they give. I am so overwhelmed with the generosity of the community,” Executive Director of the Sunshine Shelter Matilda Stephens said. “This year has given us the opportunity to provide 42 children with Christmas gifts.”

It's a wonderful thing, especially this time of year, to give of yourself and your time for someone else. May God bless the ladies of DST for opening their hearts and arms to the Sunshine Shelter.
I would like to thank you for your leadership and all your tireless work in our community. Always leaving things better than you found them -- women of distinction!!
Keep up the good work,
Your Soror
