NATCHEZ —Alcorn State alumnus and current NFL star Steve McNair talked about more than football at this year’s annual Steve McNair Football Camp hosted by Alcorn State University Friday.
“My heart is in the community,” McNair said. “It’s a way for me to give back.”
Field activities started at 8 a.m. for the 400 plus 9- to 17-year-olds. The football camp is free of charge and open to all kids.

“It’s about giving these kids hope,” McNair said. “With this camp being free, less fortunate kids can come out and get better.”
Rain forced the action indoors but did not interrupt the many coaches, players and volunteers from Co-Lin Community College and Alcorn State from running the campers through agility drills and obstacle courses.
The staff was composed of many former campers looking to make a difference.
“I came to help the kids,” former Natchez High starting quarterback Jason Bruce said. “I attended this camp for the past two years. Now I want to help the younger kids like I was helped.”
Campers came from all over Mississippi and Louisiana and as far as Florida to attend.
“I came to listen and see Steve McNair,” 10-year-old Florida native Johnathan Dillard said.
Football was not the only thing stressed at this year’s camp.
Campers received advice on staying in school, making good choices and surrounding themselves with good people.
“This is my first time to attend,” Ferriday High School Senior Kendrick Harris said. “Everyone stresses how important it is to go to classes and take the ACT to better ourselves.”
When talking to the kids, McNair stressed the importance of education and how you’ve “got to have it to make it this world.”
“Not everyone is going to be a professional athlete,” McNair said. “You have to know the basics like two plus two.”
The camp ended with all the campers receiving goodie bags and an autographed photo of McNair.
“This year’s camp has been a tremendous success,” camp volunteer Mitchell Williams said. “This is our fourth year here and despite the rain, everyone was willing to work hard.”
