Ferriday flags to be dedicated May 15

Published Saturday, May 5, 2007

VIDALIA — Oh, say can you see? The Ferriday Garden Club will officially dedicate the patriotic flag display just east of Ferriday May 15 at 2 p.m.

The club established the “Bayou Memorial Park” to honor all who have served or are serving in the U.S. armed forces, Garden Club member Lena Bateman said.

The location of the park, next to Bayou Cocodrie, was chosen because of its size and scenic nature, she said.

The park features 12 trees, 55 American flags and the nine other flags that have flown over Louisiana, Bateman said.

“The trees were planted to honor the agencies that keep us free,” she said.

Those agencies include law enforcement and fire departments, she said.

Motorists may also note the park because it is marked with a Blue Star Memorial Highway sign. The marker stands in front of a brick encasement, behind which the flags are flown.

Lights are mounted to illuminate the flags and trees after dark.

The flags were donated by local citizens in memory or in honor of loved ones who served for the country, Bateman said.

The display was paid for by a grant from Principal Financial Group’s “Let freedom ring” program, Bateman said.

“There were three grants given in Louisiana,” she said. “Ours was the highest.”

The two-year project was completed at a cost of $8,000, and — along with grant money — was paid for by local sponsors.

“We couldn’t have done it without the local community efforts,” Bateman said.

Parking for the dedication will be at The Pentecostals of the Miss-Lou, and a shuttle service will be provided, she said.

Parking at the park will only be available for the handicapped and for those participating in the program, Bateman said.
