Bulldogs look to end season with win against Hattiesburg

Published Tuesday, November 6, 2007

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Bulldogs look to keep their playoff hopes alive this week when they take on the 7-3 Hattiesburg Tigers.

The Bulldogs need to win and Wingfield needs to lose to Brandon this Friday in order for to go to the post season.

“We’re down but not out,” Natchez head coach Lance Reed said. “The team is ready to get back at it.”

Reed said his team still had a winning season to play for and that meant a lot to his club.

In last week’s 41-35 loss to Wingfield, the Bulldogs were plagued by turnovers and the inability to stop the big plays.

“We had a chance to win it in the end,” Reed said. “We had too many untimely turnovers and we failed to execute on defense.”

Reed can’t dwell on last week too much. He has to worry about Hattiesburg’s running attack.

“They are a solid team,” he said. “There strength has been the run. Stopping the run has been a problem for us all season.”

Reed said they were going to work on tackling and not allowing the game to become a shootout.

“It boils down to fundamentals,” Reed said. “We have to get better at doing the basics like tackling.”

The Bulldogs will be looking for mismatches against Hattiesburg’s 4-3 defense.

“They play their base defense for the most part,” Reed said. “Their linebackers will have to cover our receivers some and that could be good for us.”

The biggest focus for the Bulldogs is not to turnover the ball.

They had three interceptions last week against the Wingfield.

“We preach a sermon on not turning over the ball every week,” Reed said.

Reed said he knows Hattiesburg will be a tough game but he was confident in his team’s ability to go to Hattiesburg and give them a good battle.”

If we beat Hattiesburg by three or more points we will be in the playoffs. In the article it says that we have to win and Wingfield has to lose to Brandon, but it doesn't matter if Wingfield win or lose. To explain, If we win by three, and say Wingfield wins, then we will go into a three team tie with Hattiesburg and Wingfield, which is a point system. The point system is based upon the head to head matchups between the three teams, with +12 being the highest you can get for a win, and -12 being the lowest you can get for a loss. Wingfield lost to Hattiesburg by 12 points, which made them a -12, and they beat us by 7 points so they would be a -5. We lost to Wingfield by 7, which made us a -7, and if we beat Hattiesburg by 3 we would be a -4, and Hattiesburg would be a +9. So Natchez and Hattiesburg will make it to the playoffs along with Oak Grove and Meridian.

Thats good news in a sense. And I hope that along with this interesting assessment, I think that they can and will continue to focus and build towards accomplishing the main thing that matters. Beating Hattiesburg. Making no costly mistakes. Making the playoffs by default is better than not making it at all. So all in all, I wish The Bulldogs the best Friday night.
