McQuarters bound over to grand jury in murder case

Published Wednesday, November 7, 2007

NATCHEZ — The woman arrested on charges of killing her live-in boyfriend waived her right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Mary Louise McQuarters, 52, 317A Dumas Drive, was arrested Sept. 30 on charges of murder.

By waiving her preliminary hearing, which determines if a person charged with a felony should be tried for the crime, McQuarters was bound over to a grand jury. The grand jury will determine whether or not there is enough evidence to try McQuarters.

Also at the hearing, Municipal Judge Jim Blough set McQuarters’ bond at $50,000.

“They had requested her bond be set at $35,000, but I’m going to set it at $50,000,” Blough said.

The judge’s original orders at McQuarters’ October arraignment set her bond at $75,000 and did not allow her to post it until after the victim’s funeral.

McQuarters, dressed in a yellow jail uniform, talked with family members in the courtroom Tuesday. Family members said they hoped to have her bonded out by the weekend.

McQuarters is charged with murdering Pete Jackson, 53, in the residence they shared.

Natchez Police said they found Jackson lying dead on the bedroom floor. Police said at the time there was a large amount of blood all over the house.

Jackson apparently died from blunt force trauma to the back of his head. He also had a puncture wound to his left wrist, the coroner said at the time.

Neighbors said they heard the couple fighting the night before, police said.

McQuarters was arrested the day after Jackson was found.

A trial date will only be set if a grand jury indicts McQuarters.

Rediculous!!!!! Bond should be set at a minimum of $1,000,000.00. You recon the bond would have been $50,000 if she wacked and killed a live-in judge? I doubt it. Justice around here is not blind, it's just plain stupid.

I agree! And of course now they will let her go and say "We didn't have enough evidence".

Or does it depend on who it is? What if is was a Judge or a judges wife,or one of there children?

The Bail is ridiculous it should have at least been 1 Million for
murder that's why we have a crime problem in Natchez, There's no
consequences for your actions.

Why do people feel violence is always the way out??? How is her life better now? Even if she was abused, etc... How is her life better now? Why not just leave?

The story says that she was dressed in a yellow jail suit,
And her bond was set in oct. at 75,000 and some say it should be even higher than that?she could not make the original bond, what good would a higher bond do? give the bondsman a bigger profit?

What I don't understand is that she owned the house, he didn't. Why couldn't she tell the cops to make him leave? She could have told her story to the shelter and they would have seen to her safety. I see this now, AFTER my own personal horror story is over.

I bet they will say that they dont have enough evidence, or something simlilar.

What is wrong with Natchez judges?

If it werent for the tEN COMMANDMENTS this town is where I would start knocking people off! LOL

That whole "thou shalt not kill " keeps me from it, it certainly is NOT the law around here!!!!

Perhaps not, but it is MURDER, not a domestic call that ended in one going to jail for the night, etc... I am sure alot of people are not "suprised" but somebody commited a huge crime by taking someones life.... and taking matters into their own hands....

If this continues as the "code" in Natchez, there will be a big red X on the maps for that area. Is everything there so corrupt that the judicial system and leaders can NOT bow up and get the job done to make a difference???? Alot of people are selling their souls for the almighty dollar and let me tell you, you know who are and you are gonna BURN, BURN, BURN.... I hope it's worth an eternity of that.

I am proud of you buttercup! You have alot to be proud of... You are living proof that people CAN and DO change. You can be forgiven and live a better life. If anybody tries to drag you down girl, with your past, you hold your head of high and tell them where to go and walk away! Evil is everywhere.

ok back to this story... so by her waiving her right does that mean she is QUILTY? does it mean she has admitted to killing him? i'm with everyone else on this one.. grand jury will probably not find enough 'evidence'.. but then again they might and THAT DA OF YA'LLS will call her attroney up while 'chill-laxin' on his sofa and tell the lawyer 'ok make a deal, manslaughter slap on the hand say no-no and put her on 'good behavior'!!

just my thoughts!! :) oh and that word chill-laxin my 7 yr. old came home saying that today!! got to keep up with them!! haha!

Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 8, 2007 at 10:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

no.. unless they meant the original article... I am looking now.

Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 8, 2007 at 11:17 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The first article with a picture was from Sept. 30. Title: LOCAL MAN FOUND DEAD, STRUCK IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD.
Was a good refresher of the situation, originally. She was crying or whatever in the picture, perhaps... but I don't really know what to make of it.... given she is the only suspect that I am aware of and in the article they weren't entirely sure of the happenings at the time.

NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was killed at his residence Saturday, apparently from blunt force trauma to the back of his head, officials said.

No arrests have been made.

Police got a call at approximately 5:50 p.m. Saturday from the man’s live-in female companion who reportedly found him.

Officers found Pete Jackson, 52, 317A Dumas Drive, lying dead on the bedroom floor.

“There was a large amount of blood all over the house,” Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

Mullins said he did not know what instrument was used to cause the blunt force trauma to the back of Jackson’s head, and Mullins said he did not know how long Jackson had been dead before he was found.

“This early in the game; we don’t want to guess about that,” he said.

Adams County Coroner James Lee said Jackson also had a puncture wound to his left wrist.

“I cannot identify how it was made,” Lee said. “But with so many pieces of broken furniture and glass in the house it could have been caused by anything.”

Lee said blood was in three rooms in the house.

“It was one of the bloodiest messes I’ve ever seen,” he said.

The house is rented by Mary McQuarters, and Jackson lived there, as well, Mullins said.

There was a report of a fight at that residence a year ago, and neighbors said they heard the couple fighting at approximately 11 p.m. Friday, Mullins said.

McQuarters was being questioned Saturday night, Mullins said.

Jackson’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

“At this point, we’re still investigating,” Mullins said. “We can’t draw conclusions.”

Jackson cared deeply about his family, daughter Shumeka Chatman said. He helped raise Chatman and her four siblings, she said. Later, he played a big role in helping raise his 12 grandchildren.

“He loved his family,” she said. “He worked and did what he had to do for his family.”

Jackson, a graduate of North Natchez High School, worked on offshore oilrigs for several years. More recently, he was working cutting trees.

In his spare time, Jackson enjoyed relaxing and watching television, Chatman said.

“He loved Westerns,” she said. “He loved watching football and wrestling. Those were his favorite shows.”

Chatman’s daughter, Keshia Chatman, 17, remembered talks with her grandfather.

“He talked to me about right and wrong things,” Keshia said.

She remembered getting gifts from him, such as teddy bears and money, for her birthday and Christmas.

Shumeka Chatman said she couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt her father.

“He never bothered anyone,” she said. “He was a sweet, loving person. They didn’t have to do him like that.”
