OSHA is very thorough. Their inspection will "encompass all companies involved with the construction project". They are aware of the evident root cause. But, they will also implement effective corrective actions for all involved.

Only know what I have read in the Democrat but at least 2 violations come to mind. Improper lifting device for man lift, and no fall protection in use. By the time OSHA leaves the scene a lawyer won't have much trouble making a case against everyone involved.

This was a senseless act that should and will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Sometimes people do the stupidiest things to save time or money, this is a bad accident that hopefully will show others the importance of safety.

I agree. This was a senseless act that could have been avoided. If the hotel was complete enough to have furniture then surely the elevators were working.

People need to stop and think before they act.

paper said osha got calls and read about it in the paper.................why didnt they get called out right away..

dont these have to do that ?.....why didnt the city inspector people call them or somebody......

mr skinner fell on monday.and osha shows up on wednesday.......helloooooooooooo!!!!!.........thats not right either....

i have worked in constructions all my life and im tired of hearing about these accidents...........someone out there......needs to get officials protecting the working men /women.......tired of seeing thes accidents.......

I am not sure there is a requirment for the company to call OSHA.

If safety has been put on the back burner on this construction site, it is a wonder that more employees have not been hurt or injured.

Yes, one would think that there would be a "freight" elevator in the hotel. If not, the elevator walls could be protected when moving bulky objects such as beds, mattresses, etc.

There is a lot of explaining to do but that will not bring back the one unlucky fellow. (Expletive), when will people learn that safety on a project comes FIRST?

I'm sick and tired of listining to people blame someones accidents on companies. For the most part it is up to the individual to protect themselves. Like Beammeupscottie pointed out the man should have not been on the forklift in the first place. What about fall protection? I guess nobody held him down and put it on him.
Someone else is to is to blame. Do you hear lawsuit in this one? B.S.
It's your life protect yourself!!! Don't count on others..
I hate the pain that the famalies will go through on account of this, but its nobodys fault but his own.

Not everybody is equipped with the common sense to "not do stupid, careless things". I am not saying this is the case here, but my point is: That IS why these companies employ people to cover certain areas... It IS their job to enforce safety measures for employees... so yes it IS their fault also...

Obviously those men were working for a company for money and needed to work to get paid. You don't get paid if you don't work, therefore, it is the foreman's responsibility to ensure the safety of the workers. That is why they have OSHA -- Occupational Safety Hazard (Assn.?)

i want to know who was driving this forklift....they ran over a bump.maybe driving too fast.......there was a driver right or did the 2 men control that from the top .?....

maybe the forklift was broken....why couldn't it hold the weight..........osha needs to check those forklift arms to see if they work ok........

why was the road bumpy...and not a paved road.........

i dont agree that its only the men's fault.........

Where was the foreman for this job? Watching? That si one responsabilty of a foreman is to make sure Safety is carried out....

so, the other day I was riding by the hotel construction site, and I noticed that the only ones doing any actual work were Mexicans...same thing I had noticed during the new bridge construction...and I began wondering...where are all these mexican people coming from...because I know that Natchez hasn't always had a large mexican population. Did they bring Mexicans in to work because they work cheaper than Natchezians would?...because I'm sure that Natchez still has many unemployed folks around here. And then, after this incident happened, and they weren't working under strict OSCHA guidelines, I wondered if they were also hiring illegal Mexicans to work. And that kinda reminded me of the folks that went to New Orleans, after Katrina, and came back claiming they had been turned away by employers on account that the mexicans had arrived and would work cheaper.

Ok, so they bring jobs to Natchez...but they bring their own mexicans to work cheaper...and that helps Natchezians how? Mr. Mayor?

I do not think that this is Chris's fault at all.........He had to have been directed to what he had to do. When you need your job, you do what you are told. What need's to come out is who's ideal was it to move the furniture this way any way? The whole situation of the way this happen makes no sense at all. Who did not have their thinking cap on that day?!!!!!!!! When will that person's name come into play????? Families, don't let this play out very long, get a good lawyer that can give good advise. I am sure it is not his fault. I once worked for a company which used forklifts and heard the foreman tell a man he better get up on it or lose his job. No safety lines and working about 15 ft. up. The man quit and so did I. There is NO excuse for putting someones life in jeopardy. A life is worth a lot more than any amount of money.

It seems to me the problem is not the paper. The paper printed the article to begin with that seems to have been part of what alerted OSHA anyway.... your statement makes no sense to me.... what difference does it make WHO was driving the forklift? the men were standing on a pallet that was on the forklift with NO safety harnesses and it tilted and they fell. Is that NOT what happened??? Were you there? Do you know something that wasn't reported??

My name is Brenda Skinner. I am the wife of Chris Skinner. Thank you all for your kind words in our time of tremendous grief. Our family is hurting a great deal at this time over our loss. It helps to see all your kind words. I want to tell you a little about my wonderful husband. He is a great husband, father, son, brother and uncle as well as a great friend. Our 11 year old daughter has written a poem that she wants to read at her father's funeral and it just breaks my heart to hear her talk about how she is not only losing her father, but losing her best friend. Someone this age should not learn about death!!! I thank you for asking all the questions that are going through my mind. Since I am in Texas, I have had a hard time getting information other than he was on the lift and he fell. My heart breaks every time I think about that phone call I received on Monday. i used to be a union worker on big constructiuon sites in new york for many years till i got hurt, then i had to work at a desk. i know about accidents, and there are alotta things that need to be known.

biggator, I don't remember ever seeing a forklift that can reach 3 floors high, so I don't know what kind of forklift that was. I do think the land around the hotel was all paved, because when I drove by there the other day, I wondered where people were going to park that stay there...doesn't seem to be much parking space for that size hotel. Mrs. Skinner, I am so sorry for your loss. I can't even begin to imagine the pain you and your family are feeling right now, not to mention the endless questions you must have. And I'm sure you are having great difficulty getting answers from anywhere. I don't know who is to blame for this accident. I try not to put the blame on anyone in particular. By the comments I've read here, it seems as though there were several things that weren't as safe as they should have been. It's just a horrible accident. The main reason I wanted to address you and other posters is to let you know about something I witnessed yesterday. I was standing in line at a burger place (outdoors). There were a group of guys that pulled up in a work truck. While they were waiting for their order, they noticed the front page of the newspaper in the machine. One of them bought a paper and was reading the article to the others. He stated that he doesn't like wearing his hard hat, but he thought it might be best if they all pay closer attention to safety. I thought that if this terrible accident saves even one life or one person from harming themselves or another, maybe it will give you some comfort. No one wants to lose a loved one. You are in my prayers.

I didn't say that Mexicans working there had anything to do with the problems. I didn't say Mr. Skinner was a Mexican. What I said is...if the people building the hotels weren't following strict Oscha guidelines, then perhaps, they would also hire illegal mexicans who would work cheaper than unemployed Natchezians. And the reason I noticed the Mexicans working there, is because I had also noticed the Mexicans working on the bridge, and I wondered why there were so many Mexicans working in Natchez all of the sudden when Natchez hadn't previously had a large Mexican population. I don't have any problem with Mexicans working or living in Natchez...it's illegal people being brought in from outside Natchez to work for less wages that I have a problem with working in Natchez. The new jobs in Natchez should be offered to the people who live in Natchez, first, and then when the job requires more help...bring legal to work people from outside to work. Any immigrant who is in this country legally should have a problem with illegal people being able to work and get more benefits than legal citizens and legal residents.

Ok gator, we all know that someone SHOULD know the answers to these questions. The issue here is that I'm sure the proper people already know who was driving the forklift, who owns it, who built the pallet, etc. They aren't going to share that with the public. It's not our place to know such details. Now, if you WORK for them, that's different. I'm sure that the proper people will ask all of the right questions. We should just pray for the family of Mr Skinner and pray for the safety of the other workers.

Ok gator, I didn't mean to step on your toes. I am a naturally curious person. I too like details, but I also know that most people won't make them public. I'm sorry about your accident. It is very unfortunate. And I'm sorry that Mrs. Skinner doesn't know the details. She should. There's no reason for that company not to answer her questions. I don't know how long you've been reading, but I do post regular and I do share my opinions (good and bad). I wasn't trying to stop anyone from doing that at all. I just don't think they will release the details to the public. Those employees do have a right to know and they certainy have every right to expect to be in a safe working environment. They should demand it. However, I'd be willing to bet that they were told to keep their mouths shut on the accident. Unfortunately, that's how these things usually go.

If somebody robs a bank, the details released to the public are very slim and kept as remote as possible....FOR A REASON...... Yes there are currupt people in this world and liars.... Truth is right. People who are placing blame need to step back and let the investigators do the job they are paid to do. A woman lost her husband and children lost their father. Everyone needs to step back and let this investigaton be done so that his wife can get the answers she is needing. It is difficult to read. About as bad as the all caps that supertrucker uses. We do need to let the people do a complete investigation on this without getting in the way or making accusations. Just because we are asking the questions, doesn't mean we are going to get the answers. I'm sure Mrs. Skinner will find out what she needs to know as soon as they have definite answers for her. THey drive by an then all of a sudden they spot 15 safety violations fromt he road. STOP! Let OSHA do the job it is suppose to do. I know it isn't fair but there is a reason all the facts of this incident haven't been made public or released to the family yet.

Oh my goodness, who is this New York person, I do believe this could help and I don't think anyone means any disrespect to Mrs. Skinner or the other family. There is co workers out there and why should they be quite until the investigation is over, if they know anything and want to voice their concerns, they shouldn't wait better yet it will help with the investigations, I would think! If everyone stays quite there could be that one person that saw something happen but is not speaking up.

GATOR's back home.finally!.............never did like big part!....that was doc joking about my weight!......
