Ferriday High School quarterback Kendrick Harris tries to maneuver around Red River High Bulldog Victor Johnson for a first down during Friday night’s playoff game in Ferriday. The Trojans won 20-6.

Ferriday stays alive in postseason play

Published Saturday, November 10, 2007

FERRIDAY — Despite a lackluster performance, the Ferriday Trojans defeated the Red River Bulldogs 20-6 to advance the second round of playoffs.

The Trojans jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first minute of the game.

Running back Matthew Smith returned the opening kickoff 93-yards. Then Red River fumbled their first snap that led to a 31-yard touchdown pass by Kendrick Harris to Donrick Washington.

“All three phases showed up to play tonight,” Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said. “We wanted to set the tone early but we have to maintain it for four quarters.”

Red River answered quickly to cut the score in half on the legs of running back Cadelro Lewis.

“Lewis is the real deal,” Harrison said. “He kept them in it for the entire game.”

At the end of the first, Red River was threatening to score from the 4-yard line but the Trojan defense held up on a fourth down attempt to keep the Trojans alive.

“We had to calm down and play our game,” Trojan linebacker Jeremy Kelly said. “We knew we had to make a big stop.”

After allowing Lewis to rush for 134 yards in the first quarter, the Trojan coaching staff made adjustments and held Lewis to just 72 yards for the rest of the game.

“The assistant coaches did a great job adjusting,” Harrison said. “The defense saved us tonight.”

The second half didn’t fair much better for either team.

After a Trojan defensive stand two 15-yard penalties and a Harris run put Ferriday on the 1-yard line, they committed two penalties of their own to back them up the 16 and a passing situation.

Harris’ pass found it’s way to a Red River defender for his third interception of the night.

“I didn’t have my best game tonight,” Harris said. “I wasn’t patient enough with my receivers.”

The Trojans got a scare in at the start of the fourth when Harris went down after a big hit from Bulldog defensive lineman Bennie Logan.

“I’ve been sick all week and it led to my leg cramping up,” Harris said. “I knew I had to get up. My team needed me.”

Red River mishandled the snap on the ensuing play to turnover the ball.

“We had too many mistakes tonight,” Red River head coach Reginald Prealow said. “Every time we took the momentum away from them, we gave it back.”

Harrison turned to his running back, Smith to kill the clock and put the game away.

“Anytime you get a key player back in the lineup, it gives your team a boost,” Harrison said.

The Bulldogs were able to contain Smith and forced Ferriday to give up the ball on downs with five minutes on the clock.

“It was a necessity that we stopped them,” Kelly said. “We knew we had to make a play.”

Red River’s offense was met by the energized Trojans and they were unable to convert on fourth and long to turnover the ball.

Three plays later, Smith put the game out of reach on an 11-yard run.

“I knew I had to come out with intensity,” Smith said. “I told my team whatever they needed I was there for them and we got it done.”

After the game, Harrison said the win was bitter sweet.

“We could have performed better tonight,” he said. “The thing is, tonight is over and it’s time to move on. We have another big game coming up.”

The Trojans will host St. John next week in round two of the state 2A playoffs. St. John defeated Loyola 46-44.

Oh, I went out to see the new roof and the head roofer told me that I didn't need to be coming outside because I was distracting to his crew. I had to laugh. I'm so not feeling that today!

I must have gotten lucky. They are those lazy type men that can only work for five hours until they have to knock off for the day. No more noise for today! Maybe the headache will finally go away. :)

Like I said, I'm not feeling that today! But, yes I would think it is better than the alternative. I don't have any choice but to "work it". I was blessed with more tail than I needed!!! lol

I can't halp but shake it! I have a little more than I need! Seriously. I wasn't trying to distract anyone. I just wanted to be sure it was going on right. Oh well, it gave me a laugh for the day!

My sister told me at lunch that it seems when she hit 30 her body has started falling apart. I laughed at her and told her it only gets worse! It aggrivates me to not feel good. It seems the older I get, the more things I have issues with. What is up with that?? lol

Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

yeah... I know the feeling... My gyno has been begging me to have a hysterectomy for 5 years now... I have adeinmyosis... a thining of the uterous from my c sections... where my muscle has bled into my uterous. Basically I have contractions all the time... but during that time (which come every other week) it is like major labor pains... and I am soooo moody... not to mention my butt sliding down my legs the older I get, so it's all fun... lol... One day I will stop long enough to have it done.... Just nothing gets done if I don't do it... ya know??

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, I know what you mean. I too have them every other week sometimes. I got on prozac to help with the bitchiness! It has helped alot. The doctor suggested I have a hysterectomy, too, but I don't want to yet. Just in case I get the urge to have kids. I doubt I will because I'm too old now, but I hate taking away that possibility. My mom had her hysterectomy when she was 37.

It sure would be nice to not have those cramps ever again, though! My doctor had to give me pain meds for it, but I can't take them most of the time because they make me sleepy. Nothing else helps it, though. I've tried every over the counter drug there is - nothing eases it. Except chocolate! :)

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Chocolate and shopping seem to be the two best things for me! They always make me feel better!

GIRL.... I can't take tylenol without getting sleepy!! they have tried me on pain meds, Didn't really help and made me sleepy.... so....I just went to walgreens and got a big bag of chocolate.... why do we want that??? crave it even.... UGH... like we are not bloated enough.... LOL

what about Aleve???

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I know! But that chocolate does wonders! I'm not supposed to be eating it either because I have high cholesterol. Let me rephrase that - the doctor thinks I have high cholesterol. When I had my check up last year it was 267. I went on a diet and got it down to 202, but I've since fallen off the wagon! He put me on cholesterol meds, but I had a reaction to the one he gave me and I didn't want to be on them from now on anyway. So, I begged him to let me try on my own. I didn't have a drop of chocolate for about 8 months! It killed me!!!

just what i needed. some Dave Mathews. yeah!!!!!

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I've tried aleve, peace. It does help a little, but not enough. I have a very high pain tolerance and these cramps kill me. I don't know how to even describe it. It's almost like there is a little person inside your abdomen with a pair of tweezers, pulling at your insides. It's pretty bad.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

chocolate is good for you they now say. the darker the better though and i like it better than milk chocolate anyway. you don't get tired of it as fast. i feel for both of you on this "issue". it just sucks.

Dang it. I can't find a piece of chocolate anywhere around here and I can't leave to get any! At least I only have another hour to go. I had 20 bags of mulch delivered to my house today, so I'll work off whatever I eat.

20 bags????? you've got work to do. where ya puttin the mulch? and i've got no less than 4 kinds of chocolate right now.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok, not fair on the chocolate! I put out around 100 bags last spring. I have shrubs all around my house and I put mulch around them. I also have beds down both side of my fence and mulch them, too. The mulch has faded and has leaves mixed in it, so I want to freshen it up. It makes it look so nice out there.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 2:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The only problem is that I won't have enough time to get them all out before dark. I hate having to work for a living! It leaves me no time to do things. lol

that's really pretty i'm sure. i love nature even when we have to help it out a little. we planted stuff last summer but most of it needs another summer to really look good. we went on a trip for a week and the drought conditions really got the better of alot of it. i mean wiped it out to the point of near death. it's fun though. i love pretty flowers like most girls do. lol

hey truth that's funny cuz we buy the 60% cacao Ghirardelli chips. and that's how they spell cocao on the bag. not sure why but i must find out. had the ones you're talking about too. i always say i'm gonna make cookies with them and we wind up eating them all. gotta use one of the recipes you sent us. for what's available to us they are the best chips. smooth.

Me, too! I enjoy working in the yard. It's instant gratification. But it does take time and patience. I used to have a black thumb, but once I figured out what plants take what kind of light, I did much better. There aren't too many pretty flowers to plant for all. I'm not a fan of pansies and mums, so I rely on my shrubs for color in the winter. I have a pink camelia that I planted last spring and it is looking pretty good and starting to bloom. I put it on the corner of my house. All of my shrubs stay green all year, but I have other things that die out in the winter, but come back each year. I also plant annuals for color in the spring and summer. I love working outdoors.

If you knew me 10 years ago, you would have never believed that, though! I look at yardwork like painting a room. Both are the quickest ways to change the look of a house or yard. My house was a dump when I bought it - yard included. It's taken me five years to get the yard the way I want it.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 3:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

it's very peaceful. camelias are so pretty. right idea with the trees that turn so pretty this time of year. well they should be but we have'nt had anything for cold weather yet. i wanna see the red and gold leaves.

5 yrs??? glad you've got it looking good. it's amazing what can be done with a place that nobody cared about before you took it over. not a soul has done anything with this yard for awhile either but i'm kinda trying. the next time we go away for any amount of time i'm paying a friend to come water i know that.

Yes. I have a tulip tree in my yard (I didn't plant it) and it has turned. I don't know if you've ever seen one, but they have gorgeous leaves. Although, I'm dying for them to get off my yard and driveway! I'll take care of that this weekend! I'm kind of picky with my yard. I spend so much time raking and cleaning it that when it feezes, my yard always gets it the worst. My neighbors cut their grass three times a year, never rake leaves and they have green grass before me each spring! UUGGHHHH

lesson learned. everything looked awful.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 13, 2007 at 3:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It took me five years because I do everything myself. I can only do a little at a time financially and physically, I had alot of things to dig up before I could plant new. I had no grass at all because there were Bradford pear trees in the front that shaded the whole yard. I cut them first thing. Then I would transplant every sprig of St Augustine grass I found until I had the yard covered.

So worth it, though! It is a big stress reliever to work outside. It does tend to wear you out, though! It stinks that your flowers dies. They might come back, though. What kind were they?

I don't want to be cremated because I have this fear of burning. I don't care if they roll me off in a ditch somewhere, but don't burn me.

i went to another story and someone on there asked if anyone had seen the new blog at the bottom of the home page. they put in a blogspot for chatting. like that will make these ppl any nicer. hahahaha

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 12:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Truth, who's the hair appt. with?

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 12:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

my oldest sister was cremated and it's horrible. could not take looking at the remains and thinking, "That's Julie". too painful.
it's all white and yellowish. not black like you see in movies or anything. there's pieces of bone and we found a tooth. gross.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 12:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, I'm sorry. Now I know for sure I'm not doing that. My mom wanted me to do that to her because she's afraid nobody can fix her make up right! I told her I was NOT cremating her no matter what. Haunt me if you want! She said that was fine, but I better make dang sure she looks good.

i was gonna tell you 2 that i either heard fireworks or an automatic weapon a few doors down but it's fireworks. good. pretty quiet area. except of course for the saws and hammers that have been an ongoing thing for a number of months now. not too loud though. ppl are building onto their house.

I can veg out now. Peace, I agree with the idiot statement. I was offended by all of that crap. They can bite me! Oh wait, I better not say that because they might! lol

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I still think George Clooney and Matthew McConaghay(sp!) were the best ones. I think Sam Elliot is sexy. Wait, how old AM I?

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And Matt Damon? I'm not really seeing that. He's cute , but doesn't do much for me. Too much of a baby face.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Me, either. I still haven't seen "Brokeback Mountain". I can't bring myself to watch Heath Ledger kissing a guy - even if it is just a movie. I'm not offended by gay people, I just don't want to watch them showing affection towards one another. Which reminds me - anyone watch Nip/Tuck last night?

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i can't watch Nip/tuck. don't want to ever see Brokeback either. wanna see an awful pic of Heath???

you won't like him so much when you see it.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why can't you watch it? I'm not sure if I want to see a bad pic of Heath. Where is it?

Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

no.... I use to watch it, but it became too soap opera-ish for me..... lol.... I watch HOUSE....Love that smart ass.... lol I watched Brokeback, I let curiousity get the better of me!!! I wish I hadn't... I still have nightmares.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Funny, truth! That is the very reason I haven't watched it. You can't get images like that out of your head!

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on November 14, 2007 at 2:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, nooooooooooo. I can't dare watch that! No thanks. I'm still not ableto grasp that.

We only have one place here that sells it and they don't have a huge selection of the smaller items. They normally order one large bag in each pattern, but it never seems to be the one I want. I have ordered online a good bit, though.

congrats to your son on his first deer. i killed one once and i have'nt wanted to do it again. had never been hunting and i killed a 6 point also within the hour. blew me away. almost broke my nose with the gun though. thought i was gonna have 2 major black eyes but they were just minor thank God. he looked right at me when i fired the gun and i felt so bad afterwards. his knees just went down. poor thing.

That's why I can't go hunting. I'm afraid I'd feel too guilty! Let me shoot an idiot, though....lol. I'm not sure what time I'm coming through. I have to pick up someone from the airport in Jackson and her plane comes in at 8:00 PM. Mom wanted to leave here about 5:00, which means I won't get there before you leave work - or before the store closes. But, I may try to talk her into leaving sooner. I'll know more later in the week.
