NPD gets traffic funds
Department to increase traffic enforcement
Published Saturday, November 10, 2007
NATCHEZ — If you see more flashing blue lights in Natchez over the next year, don’t be surprised.
The Natchez Police Department received a $35,000 federal grant earlier this month for more traffic enforcement.
“The majority of the money will be used to pay an officer overtime,” Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said. “They will be out strictly doing traffic enforcement work, not answering routine calls. They’ll be in neighborhoods as well as on the highway.”
Drivers running red lights and stop signs, speeding and not buckled up will be more likely to get caught.
“It’s going to be a great asset to us to have an officer out there at no cost to the city,” Mullins said.
The grant is especially important now, since the department has several officers out injured and serving in the military.
“It puts one more officer on patrol who is available in emergencies,” Mullins said.
The grant requires the department to conduct two safety checkpoints each month and more during holidays, such as Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Traffic stops aren’t aimed at spoiling drivers’ fun. Traffic enforcement saves lives, Mullins said.
“The goal for any traffic enforcement is to reduce injuries, accidents and fatalities,” he said. “It makes your streets and roadways safer. Anytime you have increased compliance with traffic laws, streets are going to be safer for the community.”
There are other benefits to increased traffic enforcement, too, Mullins said.
“We solve crimes gathered from information we get from traffic stops,” Mullins said. “Officers often make arrests on traffic stops for outstanding warrants, fugitives from other areas. Oftentimes, we recover stolen property. We have found officers actively enforcing traffic law is a tremendous benefit in reducing the overall crime rate.”

wow! looks like more tickets for people with enough money to pay rent and buy food for their kids!

The only thing the NPD can do is give a ticket for not having on a seatbelt.

YEAH..thats just great !!!! Not enough to patrol the streets but can have enough patrolman to sit in the car & write tickets..thats just great.Someone told me years ago Ntz would be a larger verson of Ferriday one day....now I believe them.

well dont speed or commit any traffic offenses and you have nothing to worry about

How about something novel and check for insurance? I happen to know from experience (twice in the past two years) that mandatory insurance doesn't mean squat around here. And the police department can't be bothered with it.

well...
I would REALLY think that an extra patrol to search for drugs would be more beneficial.
In St. Francisville they have 2 k9 units posted at both ends of town...and EVERYONE knows to slow down and no one wants to drive through there if they have drugs.
That just might be a good idea...
AND get this...the judges there, actually put people away for a year or more if they are caught with any drugs at all...isn't that a novel idea?
***sarcasm
A cop last night told me that they are expecting a drug shooting tonight, how sad is this getting?

That's not true ntzcop. I was stopped sometime ago 1996 or 97 in Natchez for doing over 45 in a 45. I know I was doing less than 40MPH. I was the only vehicle on the road early on a Sunday morning in the wee hours heading for work. I know why I was stopped. I am sure the cop thought I was clubing and had an easy DUI. She refused to let me look at her radar unit. The type of work I was doing I could not get away at the time to fight the ticket in court. From that point on I made sure not to purchase anything expensive in Natchez even my livestock feed.

The way people drive around here, I'm glad for the extra enforcement. I have been nearly hit numerous times by drivers running stop signs and red lights. And people in Natchez/Adams County are not getting the message that drinking and driving is not okay. I welcome the beefed up traffic enforcement.

I'm agree with ntzcop now just follow the law CHANCES are you will be just fine....

During all the construction have you seen very few people obey the 35 MPH-- right, they still drove 45 and ran the red lights set up at Wood Avenue constantly. I've almost been hit several times and I had the protected green arrow. There is no where you can't get to in 10 minutes time and that's obeying the law. I am a stickler for obeying traffic laws, construction signs, and wearing my seat belt. Glad this is here -- to the one who complained about the traffic cop and the 40 mph -- there is a bad one everywhere in every business. A telephone call might have handled the situation. Remember to get badge numbers and names and write down everything when you can.

flylo, I got a ticket in Feb. 1997 with a cop telling me that I was doing over 45. There just happened to be a car passing me. The cop pulled out of his hiding place near Dairy Queen and put his lights on, I pulled over so he could get the speeding car before it got to the Mississippi Bridge. Well, low and behold, he pulled in right behind me and wouldn't come up to my door. He stood about where my gas tank was and told me to hand him my drivers license. I told him I was only pulling over so he could go and get the one that was speeding. He said, "We are not going to argue about this on the highway." If you have any questions about this, meet me in court. I asked him if I could see on the radar gun how fast I was going and he told me that "in all due respect, I can't release that information." Well, I went to court because I knew I was right and I stood up for myself. My friends told me it wouldn't do any good. I had faith in the judicial system. That was the day I found out how crooked a cop and judge could be. He lied to the judge and when I tried to tell the judge he was lying, the judge told me to be quiet. Very long story short, I had to pay the ticket and was very disappointed in the system. I don't trust them anymore for anything.

oh yeah, he told the judge that he offered to show me the radar speed but I refused to look at it.

well well well i know several of the cops in natchez and none i think i are bad or out do do someone dirty!!! They are trying to do there jobs which aren't great jobs in the first place. The people that dont like the the cops or the laws always seem to be hiding something. Crime is a problem and this is what our officals seem to think will help well lets see if it works. I myself have a child and dont won t him raised in this crimefulll city!! I can live with not speeding and wearing my seat belt, Oh and ins mygoodness people dont have ins in natchez why not its not that darn expensive and it will save you in the long run!! So give our law inforcement a break!! They re doing their jobs!!!

((( ijohnson))) you are sooo right!! poor things!! i think more traffic stops may help on reducing a lil crime... (even though i'm not liking the fact that i will more then likely be one of the many that will be pulled over everytime i come home now!! haha! lead foot!) but when the officer stops someone if they expect anything outta the usual then they can ask futher questions!! they can dig into peoples business deeper!! who knows a drug dealer may be arrested from the result of a simple running the stop sign type thing!!

I can see right now that Natchez wants to be like Ferriday, that should make everybody their feel good. It won't be long before the right person gets a ticket and the belly aching will begin. Then the whole process of who you are and who you know will begin. Sure there are good cops and there are bad cops. I feel the public should be able to record or film a traffic stop so that their story want be edited to make the law officer look good in court. But when you step out of a vehicle w/ a tape recorder or camera you will either get shot or arrested because Barney Fife thinks its a weapon. This will insult their intelligence if they think you might have the upper hand.
Posted by Crazynms (anonymous) on November 10, 2007 at 12:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Buy a small tape recorder, keep it in your car and USE IT !!! put it in you pocket just in case they tell you to get out of the car.
No judge should cut you off and not give you what is your God giving right.... TO TELL YOUR SIDE OF THE STORY... even if he will side with the other, he should uphold the law and let you defend yourself.

Heres my deal, they have all the crap in the world on their cars, cameras and recorders. I like to see their face when you step out of the car with a camera and they tell you to put it away and you cant use it. But you cant tell them to turn theirs off. These are the things I have trouble with.

There are a LOT of wonderful policemen out there. Its the bad ones that give them all a bad rap.

One extra officer on traffic enforcement is not going to turn Natchez into Ferriday. I'm a heckuva lot more worried about some of you fools out there on the roads than I am about one extra traffic cop.

I agree with you ijohnson and buttercup they are damned no matter what!!!

ntzmom, it's illegal to search anyone's private property without a warrant. If St. Francisville indeed has something like that set up, that's also illegal. IF you get pulled over for a traffic violation AND the cop has reasonable suspicion to search your vehicle, that's different. But random searches of your private property? That is unconstitutional.
Also, if somebody gets caught on possession and they only have a personal amount, not anything they would be distributing, why on earth would they need to be in jail for more than a year?

There are Judges, then there are "The Natchez Judges". You do your own thinking about that.

NPD if you want to write more speeding tickets just hang out at the new MS river bridge during grave yard shift . That's the hottest drag strip around in this area . With your cell phone and light bridge traffic the race is on ! But seriously , someone is going to get killed one night racing on those bridges .

Hope they will slow down the speeders on Minor Street and Morgantown Road as well as Booker Road. Unfortuniately there's not a law prohibiting "low riding". Whenever I see someone "slouched- down" where you can't see who they are, I immediately think they have done something unlawful and are concealing their identity or are about to do something wrong ang are hiding their identity!

and the spped bumps in natchez are a joke! haha!! some people have figured it out the 'faster' you go over them the smoother they are... not saying any names!! haha!! and i'm pleding the fifth!! haha!

oops i meant speed bumps

Yelp, this is case for most of speed bumps. There are a few that you have to slow down.
The one close to the house is a noise nuisance more than a speed control. You can hear them slowing down and then gun the engine to get back up to speed. Or you hear a trailer bounce over the bump. Or you...............
Just one more example of critical thinking by the elected officials.

Why dont they take the 35000.00 & give the policemen/women a raise.I bet it ends up in the general fund!!!!

flylo, you know I had the same experience one night coming home from work about midnight. I had my daughters car, some low sexy black thing, can't remember what - this was probably 1997/98 - and was pulled over by a policeman I knew. He thought I was some kid out past curfew, he said. But I wasn't breaking any laws so I didn't get a ticket or anything. But my question was, if he couldn't see who I was from behind me, why pull me over, except that I had a sports type car?

That's about right, the downtown clowns would rather give tickets for speeding than go after the criminal element. It makes them look like they are doing something for the community.
But guess what, downtown clowns, it will not work with the voters. Watch you behinds because you may not be long in your position after next years election.

Rest easy good people, after the first negative feed back from a tourist gets the" CLUB's" attention the job will be scaled way back. Look at Ferriday. No one goes there unless they just have to. Tourism won't run the risk of getting BLACK LISTED.
Posted by noneya (anonymous) on November 11, 2007 at 12:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Okay, I'm probably going to be blasted for this but here goes (I guess my opinion is as valuable as the next ones)...What's wrong with traffic tickets IF (notice I said IF)they are given for a valid reason? I agree that there should be more citations issued in the Natchez area. i see giving them out if someone is traveling more than 5 MPH over the limit. Natchez has too much traffic for people to be racing over the bridges and around the by-pass. And lets not EVEN get on the subject of slow drivers in the left lane or no turn signal!!! Those 2 things really burn my hind-end up! And the business of ME having to pay insurance in case I am hit by an uninsured motorist????? Now that REALLY lights my fire!! More traffic stops will help eliminate these problems. Ferriday takes it to the extreme, though, and issues unwarranted citations. I make it a point to avoid going through there like the PLAGUE!! So a new officer for traffic is "a good thing" (as Martha S. would say)
..................................................On another note.....Remember someone stating that a guy had been shot at in town the other day by someone with a Tx. tag? Well guess what??? Thats a true story!!! The man that got shot at was S. Tuminello and he went to the police dept. to report this and they made it sound like he had done something wrong by blowing his horn to hurry the guy up through the green light. Now, I have to admit that this is second-hand info and as many rumors (and notice I admitted RUMOR)may not be entirely true, I believe this because I know this man and HE was the one that related this info to others. I don't know what the outcome was, all I know is that he now has a bullet hole in his door. Better watch who you fuss with on the roads nowadays, huh? Mean-a$$ fools out there.

Why blast the Natchez Police Officers for doing there job. Afterall, you the citizens should be standing up for the officers and asking for them to be paid more, then maybe you would get the service that you feel you should be getting. I personally know officers that are tired of working for nothing. In fact the talk about the blue flu has come up several times. What would the Mayor and Board of Alderman do then. I think that a grant to be able to pay officers more money to due there job is totally acceptable. Afterall you as the citizen want to be able to sleep at night dont you? Maybe this will get the officers to be able to only have to work ONE job instead of numerous to be able to pay there bills and support there families.

can police oficers go on strike? (don't that sound dumb of me to ask that??( but seriously i would like to know. why haven't the ooficers did one of them yet?? you know it only takes a couple hours if that long for the police officers to be standing there with sign hell no we wont go!! before some one some where will start wheeling and dealin about their salaries!!!!????? think about it men/women>???? think about it....

The same thing crossed my mind just before buttercup's post. Why don't they strike?. Call Jackson tv cameras down here to announce it to the world and let everyone know that the civic leaders won't pay them a decent salary. Be sure to mention our great leader wants to pay 100K for some stranger to come in here to tell him how to build a building.
Posted by Listenup (anonymous) on November 11, 2007 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Strike would definitely be an option. Wonder how the city officials and citizens would feel then???? What would the city of natchez do? Citizens already complain enough that officers dont' do there job, patrol neighborhoods. But in all actuality, the officers do there part of the criminal justice process, it is up to the courts to do something with the offenders that are brought before them.

Everyone has there opinon so I will put my two cents in, I am a cop in Natchez we have alot of good officers. The only people that think they are bad is the people that break the law. Right now I am in Samarra, Iraq and everyone in the states need to love there Police Dept. There is no one in the country that has to worry about having sombody bust in there door and kill them, shooting them and there kids or cutting there heads off and displaying the body of them and there family in a market, We are blessed in the states cause of police. The Iraqi Police are scared to do the job cause they will get killed along with there families if the terrorist find out who they are. I mean come on people how would you feel to go to Walmart and 30 or 40 headless, or worse bodys was hanging in the parking lot or on the building.....Now that I am off that soap box for everyone that dont know most crimes can be stopped by just pulling over a car. Cops see things that liberal and sheltered people wouldnt dream of. Cops see the good and bad in people. So quit complaining about the spot light on you and having to be uncomfortable for 5 sec. to give him your drivers license. I dont know if yall know but Police Officers have a dangerous job. Do any of yall go to work and say hell I hope sombody dont have a bad day I dont feel like getting shot or having to deside if sombody lives or dies by my hand. That is hard for alot of people to handle thats why if you are a Police Officer, Fire Fighter, or EMT you didnt pick the job you was born to do it.

i moved to natchez about a year ago, and since that time i can only recall seeing one person pulled over by natchez pd for a traffic violation. ONE...that's not very many for that length of time. it's not like everyone around here drives great, either. i see people blow through stop signs downtown almost everyday. people driving on the bypass must think they are driving on natchez motor speedway.
i'm glad that there will be extra traffic patrols going on, and i hope everyone driving like an idiot gets a ticket.

I don't necessarily know standing on a picket line is the answer either. Maybe the priorities of the city officials with the ones that protect them daily should be at the top of the list. Oh wait, I am sorry for thinking that. The leaders are to busy trying to figure out how to keep the names of the alderman out of the paper that CANT MANAGE THERE OWN CHECKING ACCOUNT. Maybe that is why all the officers have to work extra jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the overtime for officers to write tickets is much needed. Just do the speed limit, and don't commit traffic violations and your police interaction won't be anything but friendly.

If idiots would obey traffic signals and stop speeding through town, the extra funds could be used to deter crime.
But as a comparison to the recent crime meetings, I guess its going to take a few incidents of lives lost to avoidable traffic accidents for NPD to start cracking down on these offenses.
