City to up security at riverfront

Published Wednesday, November 14, 2007

VIDALIA — When a Vidalia resident raised questions at Tuesday’s Vidalia aldermen meeting about safety along the riverfront, Mayor Hyram Copeland promised to increase security.

Vicki Torrey said she and other women take walks along the riverfront on a regular basis. The weekend armed robbery at Slough Daddy’s restaurant concerned her, she said.

“A lot of women walk down there,” Alderwoman Mo Saunders said.

Copeland pointed out that the robber was apprehended within minutes of the incident.

“It’s not a joking matter. I will get with the chief and we’ll see what the situation is and we will have more security,” Copeland said.

Torrey and other women who walk along the area also asked for a water fountain of some sort at the end of the riverwalk.

“It wouldn’t have to be refrigerated,” Torrey said.

Copeland said he would see if the city could install a water fountain.

In other business:

4The board gave the mayor authority to sign a resolution authorizing the town to enter into an agreement with Louisiana Elastomer. The $700,000 state grant would go toward helping the rubber company install infrastructure, such as water and sewer, for a planned factory.

4The board also approved occupational licenses for J&J Martinez Restaurant, Centennial Communications, RBL Management Services and The Bar-B-Que Bistro.

A drinking water fountain! Carry a water bottle why use tax dollars for a fountain. Ask not what the city can do for you but what you can do for the city. Vote often and vote everywhere.

That's "odd" because EVERY TIME I go to the Riverfront or even past it, I ALWAYS see a cop coming or going.

See how quickly Vidalia comes together to see that crime does not escalate!!! Natchez could use a lesson here.

I missed that article about the robbery at Slough Daddy's. This is the first I've heard of it. Wow! Slough Daddy's is a really nice place to eat. Good food too. I enjoy sitting out on the deck next to the water.

Well I don't know about yall, but to me...crime in Vidalia is crime in Natchez...and vice versa. We're afterall the same area, a river just runs through it is all that separates us. Ok, so we're separate states, but it's just a hop and a skip for the criminal to get from one place to the other.

Why are the cameras on the riverfront not functioning? Seems to me this would help catch criminals at work and deter them somewhat.

Some people would not feel safe sitting inside Ft.Knox. What do you want armed soldiers walking our streets questioning everyone that passes. Maybe a curfew that all citizens must remain inside after dusk. Show me your papers or else off with your head. Get a permit, pack a weapon and go down blazing. Make the criminals fear us!

Everyone needs to goto clarionledger.com and look under the editorial heading at the story about Binky---and the "judge" who sentenced him---or the lack of a sentence.
I tried to e-mail some you you but I was cut off after 3 e-mails to people.
Sorry if I did not contact you directly!

Hey timnoklahoma...thanks for the link to the CL. That was interesting.

Wonder if he will ever have to cough up those books? Will they just let it go? Hmm. Seems like he would have to go to jail just on that alone.

Yall don't miss clicking on timnoklahoma's link.

Which end would you like the water fountain at? I think this calls for a vote. I think the fountain would have to be temperature controlled so you wouldn't burn your mouth and sue the good city in the middle of summer. It would also need to be bolted down so no one would walk off with it.

There are already water fountains beside the restrooms at the hotel end. I think the RV park has water fountains, and we can use their restrooms. Don't think we need any more. Besides pretty soon we'll have the Holiday Inn to go into to use their water fountains! lol There is a 10:00 curfew on the walkway, but I am not usually out there that late, so I don't know if it is enforced, but I also see police cars go by while I'm walking.

1voice says -->"Why are the cameras on the riverfront not functioning? Seems to me this would help catch criminals at work and deter them somewhat."

Even if the cameras were functioning, it would not make any difference. Who will monitor them...because it sure won't be VPD.

I've seen people riding motorcycles onto the riverwalk after coming out of one of the boat landings. In daylight, with people walking on the walkway.
You have to pass a series of questions from the VPD dispatcher before they even think of sending someone there.

I like "beamup's" suggestion better anyway. Would be better off packing heat than to play 20 questions with some dispatcher with an attitude.
