Green Wave gets kicked by BHS

NATCHEZ — Brookhaven High School used an eight-goal first half to defeat the Cathedral Lady Green Wave 8-0 in soccer action.

Freshman forward Shellie Smith tallied a hat trick scoring her first of three goals in the first five minutes of play.

Cathedral never found an opening in Brookhaven’s defense to get a clear shot on goal.

Their best chance to end the shutout came late in the second half when Lani Griffith’s penalty kick found it’s way into goalkeeper Terri Hodges’ arms.

Hodges earned the shutout for Brookhaven.

Brookhaven 6, Cathedral 1

The Cathedral boys’ soccer team couldn’t overcome a sluggish start and lose 6-1 against Brookhaven High.

“We just came out slow,” head coach Rick Simons said. “I don’t think we like playing early on Mondays.”

Brookhaven used three first half goals to jump out on the Green Wave.

“Brookhaven had some good shots and made some good passes,” Simons said.

The lone goal for Cathedral came off of a penalty kick by Chris Griffith in the second half.

“We came out stronger in the second half,” Simons said. “This was a learning experience for us. I’m more worried about district than this one. The kids know they need to work on things.”
