Natchez Boys use quick goals to ensure win

NATCHEZ — The Natchez High boy’s soccer team jumped out quick and never looked back to defeat McComb 5-2 Saturday.

In the third minute of the game Ross Smith used an assist from Kent Calvit to put the Bulldogs on the board 1-0.

It didn’t take long for Natchez to score again as Calvit got his first of two goals off a deflection.

The Bulldogs went into the half up 3-1.

“I was more focused on keeping the defense going at halftime,” Natchez soccer coach David Hogue said. “If McComb scored another goal, it could have changed the momentum.”

The defense didn’t let up. They held McComb to one goal in the second.

Smith and Calvit added two more goals to clinch the win. McComb’s only goals came off penalty kicks.

“We played well tonight,” Hogue said. I’m real proud of them. The defense was patient and stayed disciplined.”

Natchez girls 3, McComb 1

The Lady Bulldogs got their first win of the season defeating McComb 3-1.

Natchez fell behind early and went into the half down 1-0.

“We had some girls show up late for the game,” Hogue said. “Once we got everyone in their right positions, we started to play better.”

Shelby Guice tied the game when Jadtrl Heard’s pass found its way through McComb’s defenders.

Erica Singleton put the Lady Bulldogs ahead when she blew by McComb’s backline to give them a 2-1 lead.

Guice secured the win with her second goal.

“Our defense was the difference,” Hogue said. “They won the game.”

Both the Natchez boys’ and girls’ soccer team will play at McComb Tuesday. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m.
