Employees work to erect city tree

Published Tuesday, November 27, 2007

NATCHEZ — It’s easy to tell that Santa is on his way to Natchez. Stores have decorated their windows for the season and the city of Natchez is busy erecting its Christmas tree on Main Street.

For the past three years, Natchez residents have enjoyed a new, artificial tree in downtown. City workers take an average of three days to bring holiday joy to residents.

“We have been putting the tree up for three years,” said city worker John Butler.

“It’s a bit difficult at times, you have to climb and everything has to be in the right place. It’s a bit dangerous, but you just have to be careful.”

Ricky Evans, a city employee for the last 11 years, looks forward to Christmas each year.

“I look forward to putting a smile on someone’s face,” Evans said.

“People come by and say it looks good and they are glad to get the tree up.”

After the season is over, city employees will also take the tree down.

“Everything has to be coordinated and put back in the proper boxes for storage at public works.” Butler said.

Why in the world do they have to put that tree in the middle of the stupid street? One of these days, some drunk is gonna mow it down.

I think it would be better to put it on the bluff along with a light display, something for the people to go and look at.

The fake tree looks much better than those real tress they had resorted to. Those trees always had chunks of missing branches, some of the needles were browning badly, and the tree looked very weak and dry. I do agree with kd however, in that if they place it on the bluff, and make like a winter wonderland of it, should be nice.

Remember when they did move the tree to the bluff????? I do. And they had so many complaints, that the following year it returned to Main Street. To move it back to the bluff and have a winter wonderland would be great. Big question, WHERE'S THE MONEY TO DO THIS???? TO DO IT RIGHT WOULD TAKE QUITE A BIT OF CITY TREASURY. Maybe they should have taken the parade money and put it towards that idea.

As far as it being destroyed by drunks, it's been located there since time beginning and if it was going to get hurt it would have already happened. Can't tell what will happen this year tho'. Up until now everyone has showed respect for it, but respect for anything is dead and in the water now.

Scrooges! Do ya'll have to complain about everything? Get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy the fact that their are people that are actually doing something to improve the Christmas holidays. Same people complaining about every artical. To much negativity for me. Merry Christmas.

As I said in another post....who knows just what memories a child will hold once he/she grows into adulthood? Would this not be a wonderful one? Have so many forgotten the wonders seen through a childs eyes? Christmas is for the children (even the older children that have reached the ripe old age of 84, like my mother!)Thank you, Natchez.
