Natchez to light up Friday
Published Wednesday, November 28, 2007
NATCHEZ — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Natchez. And it will look even more festive Friday at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony downtown.
The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Main and Commerce streets.
The streets will be blocked so crowds can gather around the large tree, said Carrie Lambert, director of the Downtown Development Association, which sponsors the tree.
But the ceremony will be more than just flipping a switch.
“We’re going to have some caroling from the Little Bitty Faces at Frazier Primary,” Lambert said. “Natchez Little Theatre will put on a skit preview of ‘A Natchez Christmas Carol,’ their upcoming play. Morgantown School is going to do some caroling. Then, we’ll have the tree lighting.”
After the tree is lit, Old St. Nick himself will join the group. To wrap up the ceremony, the crowd will be given candles and invited to join in caroling.
Free hot chocolate and cookies will be available to all.
The event is free, and anyone may attend, Lambert said.
“The whole town, everyone, and beyond the town,” she said. “The world is invited.”
The lighting ceremony is intended to bring together the Miss-Lou community, she said.
“We do something original here,” Lambert said. “To have a tree in the middle of the street on your main street, we have a pretty rare thing here. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together and have the Christmas spirit and to open up the Christmas season.”
The family event is especially important for children, she said.
“We want to make memories for them,” she said.
People are welcome to show up early and stay late for hot chocolate and downtown shopping, Lambert said.
“We want you to spend your Friday evening with us,” she said. “Shop, eat drink and be merry.”

Com'on everyone, don't deprive your kiddies of the festive opening of the holidays. Bring them out and have a good time with the community. One good thing about this is, you can make a good showing of face to show the 'thugs' that want to take over, that you will stand together as a solid front and protect your children's home town. It is their town, their home, they deserve the peace and comfort that you provide for them. Most of all take the time to really teach them what the season is all about. This is the celebrated time set aside to honor the birth of our Christ, the greatest gift of all.
