The Mississippi River continues to be a nuisance for Vidalia Riverfront businesses and visitors. Wednesday morning the river continued to back up into the main road along the riverfront leaving about a foot of water in the street in front of the Vidalia Conference Center and the Riverpark Medical Center.

Water covered the sidewalks in front of the medical center.

Crews from Vidalia public works were working to improve the situation as cars slowly drove into the parking lot. Another parking lot along the east side of Riverpark Medical Center has been opened for patients until the flooding is reduced.

The road was closed for access to the Vidalia Conference Center. Riverpark medical center remains open.

uhh, exactly when did it become known that the Mississippi River sometimes rises over its banks after the great northern flush of springtime?

and then human brightness continues when we build businesses and other things well within the flood zones, and say bad river when nature happens.

as the late great richard pryor once said,"No (person) in the world can hold back water when it wants to go!"

I thought the river was falling!!! I knew better than to belive that one, the snow up north hasm't even melted yet! Wait until that happens! And all the rain they have been getting up north also is playing a big factor too! You don't have to be a guiness to figure out where it will all go! I figure the river will fall a little then go right back up and possibley higher than it is now! Just my opinion!

I agree with sillywilly. Why DO they build in places that are likely to flood when the river swells?

They build near the river for the same reason they build on the sand beaches - money.

There's a reason why Vidalia was moved in 1937, you think?
Even one of the markers on the walk was displayed to tell all the visitors about what Vidalia had to go through in 1937. I guess we didn't learn from that, did we?

I'm afraid you are correct...they build in dangerous places for the love of money over common sense! Case in point..who in their right mind would build a city in a bowl? New Orleans! Now our fine friends in Vidalia have the same disease and are putting money over common sense.

The river will not receed like they think it is going to. They need to open the locks down in Simmsport and let some of this water out before we have more homes lost due to them.

My Father has a camp that is under water, he has it on stilks 30 ft. up in the air and the water has gotten waist deep for an adult in it. This flood is worse than the one in 1997 but I believe it will get as bad as the one in the late 70's.
