Cell phone tower worker falls 100 feet to his death

Published Thursday, April 24, 2008

NATCHEZ — On Wednesday afternoon a worker on a cell phone tower on U.S. 61 South slipped and fell approximately 100 feet to his death.

Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Maj. Jody Waldrop said Mark F. Haynes, of Griffin, Ga., was wearing a safety harness when he fell.

“It’s a tragic accident,” he said.

Waldrop said it was unclear if Haynes was re-securing his safety harness to a beam when he slipped and fell.

Adams County Coroner James Lee said Haynes’ death was caused by extensive head and chest injuries.

“His whole body was actually broken,” he said.

Lee said an autopsy and toxicology screening will be done on the body.

Haynes and three other men working on the tower at the time of the accident were employed by Black & Veatch, a telecommunications company.

I think that in consideration of the family, the article could have been better worded.
