Richard Gess gives his information to State Trooper Marqus Fisher and Natchez Fire Department Lt. Joe Garrity Monday afternoon after he flipped his 18-wheeler on U.S. 61 North.
Driver flips 18-wheeler
Published Tuesday, April 29, 2008
NATCHEZ — A Tennessee truck driver made an unexpected stop in Natchez on Monday evening — at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Richard Gess, of London, Tenn., lost control of his 18-wheeler, carrying plastics, and turned the truck on its side on the shoulder of U.S. 61 south of Trinity Episcopal Day School.
Gess said he thought he had a blowout just before he lost control of the vehicle.

Fisher puts Gess into the back of a cruiser Monday afternoon. Gess was arrested on charges of suspicion drunk driving.
“I couldn’t bring it back on the road,” he said.
However after Trooper Marqus Fisher administered a breath test Gess was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Trooper Rusty Boyd said Gess was charged with suspicion of drunk driving.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and paramedics at the scene said Gess refused medical treatment.

Did you mean on 61S just south of Trinity? Saw something on the right coming into town and at least three vehicles with blue lights were working something on the other side of the road(southbound lane) around nine-thirty tonight. It looked like a load from a semi on the northbound shoulder, but could see nothing on the southside except for police vehicles and traffic. The picture above seems like something else entirely, but you never know.

Yes! It is 61 south past trinity but it was in the northbound lane headed towards town! If that guy was driving while intoxicated, I really hope he goes before a judge that will actually do something! It is bad enough when u get behind the wheel of a car or pickup truck, but when you are behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler and been drinking, that is a whole lot worse! I am just glad noone was hurt and it was only the truck that was in the accident! I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of this and if he had been drinking!

I am confused here,
"However after Trooper Marqus Fisher administered a breath test Gess was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Trooper Rusty Boyd said Gess was charged with suspicion of drunk driving."
If a breath test was taken, wouldn't that have shown one way or another if he were drunk or not?

sorry for the double post but I need to clarify something
If a breath test was taken, wouldn't that have shown one way or another if he were drunk or not there should be no suspicion about it...

I sure hope this wakes him up and helps him to realize he could have lost his life all because of drinking, if that's what he had been doing. Sad thing about it, I'm sure this man is someone's daddy and grandpa. He needs professional help and needs to give his life over to the Lord, for sure!

Not only could he have took his own live, He could have hit a car full of you loved ones or my loved ones and killed them. Everyone knows that people who drink and drive or do drugs and drive are rarely ever hurt. It is the people who they hit that are injuried or killed. True, I feel bad knowing that some kids grandpa or daddy is going to jail. But, this guy really needs to get some serious help before he kills someone.

A friend of mine pulled him out of the truck. Lots of Busch cans. I guess he was heading for the mountains.

I read the article about the 6pm and saw the daylight in the photo. When I passed there about 9:30 pm you did not look at the truck turned over on the right until you got beside it because of all the activity on the other side of the road. Multiple cars with blue lights and the traffic was stopped. They seemed to be looking out into the ditch along the west side of the southbound lane. There was lots of plastic residue in the northbound side.

You know if he was in the northbound lane then it is 61 N... South bound lane is 61 S.. Just wanted to throw that in there...

I saw the truck actually leave the road and turn over. It was about 5:10 p.m. I had just left work. Some guys ran over there, one in a red shirt and a greenish-blue shirt and they climbed on the truck as the tires were still spinning. They got the man out in about 1-2 minutes. Then they all ran up on the hill and the driver immediately lit a cigarette up which I thought was dangerous since I saw fuel pouring out under the truck from the tank. I was sitting in the southbound lane and I took pictures. One of the pictures is the guy in the greenish blue shirt pulling the man out of the truck and the guy in the red shirt assisting him. I know it was dead weight for the guy pulling him out because in the picture he was holding him under his arms and pulling backwards. It wasn't till about 5:20 - 5:25 that the police, state trooper, unmarked white cars, fire trucks and ambulance came. I really think the heros in this story are the two guys that got the guy out. He had to open the door and go down into the cab of the truck to get him. After they got him out, I saw the two men speak to each other and shake hands with one another. Just thought I would let the people know there are heros everywhere.

WOW! Thanks for that racehorse! Those two guys could have been risking their lives helping another human in need. Seems that happens alot in Natchez. More reason to be proud of being a Natchezian.

Thank the Lord no one was injured or killed, that's one drunken driver off the road.
Some people don't realized how dangerous it is to drink and drive.

I hope IF he was in fact drinking and driving an 18 WHEELER.. that he will never be allowed behind the wheel of one again.. That's very idiotic on his part.
Thank you to the heroes who pulled him out of the truck! I'm with sayitloud! You make me proud to be a Natchezian!!!!

Wow!!! He's now ruined his life over a few cocktails. When will ppl learn not to drink and drive and what kind of thrill do you get drinking while you're working. It's not like ppl can't tell. Do they think they're fooling anyone?

Great job, saving a life. It seems to me like the guy was intoxicated. I hope he gets what he has coming. I'm just thankful that there were not any injuries or fatalities. That is also what Natchez should be thankful for. Stop worring about what's going to happen to him. The law will handle him. Residents of Natchez should be worried more about the education of their youth, instead of standing by and allowing them to be jailed for the smallest things. Someone needs to spend some of that Phen Phen money on a recreation center to give them something to do.

ok people, so a person is guilty until proven innocent??
having bartended in several of the bars in natchez, i know of many of our upstanding citizens that have gotten blitzed and driven home.
and if you look at some of the pictures in the you've seen gallery you will notice people holding open beers in public,(a minor violation of the local law)
for our childrens proms, there is a company that provides a "party bus" and the youth of this town are allowed to drink on this bus, (contributing to the deliquency of minors, possesion of alcohol by minors afew more violations here)
if you have teenagers, look at some of their facebook photos,
a local bar owner has for years allowed underage people in the bar to drink.
natchez youth and drinking seems to be a norm here,,it went on when i was growing up, and it continues.
until parents are willing to address the problem at their own back door, then how can we as a whole condem others..
oh that is also the norm as i have seen it first hand in this town.
"if you do not know what you are doing, someone here does"
a friend of mine was killed on new years eve of 92 by a drunk driver when the car he was driving hit a live oak tree, and this person still to this day goes into the bars and drinks, before the wreck they were in a bar in natchez
,,and the recent death of a 16 year old and her friends by a drunk driver from this area,,
recent accidents were alcohol might have been involve we have not heard anything about any charges, tickets, or further investigations about said accidents, could it be because who were the parties involved????hummmmm makes you think don't it,,
i feel for the families of victims, i feel for the families of the guilty parties, but until you are willing to be judged then judge not,
so before i cast judgement on this man, i would need to know all the details, the etoh level on the breathalizer, and if a blood level was done also (the most accurate) did he have any medical conditions
because looking at the records section of the paper (were the arrests are listed) howcome only certian names make it into the paper where others do not,,who are they,,or better yet who do they know..not to get their name put in the paper for what they did wrong.
i know i am rambling, but nobody cares right,,yeah, i care and i am nobody.

I am sitting here nodding my head nobody. You are right, everyone is quick to condem (including myself sometimes), but we all know of people driving after drinking and any of those could have ended up the same way.

By reading jamming1's post, this guy is from Tennessee. If he was driving from Tennesee, and had a wreck in Natchez, let's just thank God he didn't cause a fatal accident or injure someone along the way. I'm pretty sure Natchez isn't the only place he's been drinking in. Thank the Lord he made it this far, .....................if he was traveling.

Another person saved by a hero who never thought of his own safety.Could have run down innocent children, a person in a wheel chair,a legally blind person with a cane, the list goes on and he was just passing through....no ties to the city it seems. He could have easily killed many, including himself.
