City may mandate bar closing times

Published Monday, August 4, 2008

NATCHEZ — You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

In the future, bar owners within city limits may be saying this earlier than desired.

Mayor Jake Middleton said he is considering an ordinance, which would mandate bars to close at 2 a.m.

“We have a certain area of town that we get a little bit of a problem from down on Main Street,” he said. “We get complaints from some of the residents that live downtown, especially the late hours when bars are open.”

He also said litter is a problem, especially broken beer bottles.

Middleton said while bar owners might try to keep their areas policed and clean, it’s hard to control all the time.

He said if this ordinance were to happen, no part of the city would be left out.

“It would be a citywide ordinance if it were put into place,” Middleton said.

He said he hasn’t discussed it with the board of aldermen.

“As far as the board actively doing any research or discussion, we have not at this point,” he said.

Middleton said he doesn’t think closing the bars will do anything to decrease crime.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said he doesn’t believe it would increase crime either.

Mullins said people will just adjust to the change and learn to start going out earlier in the evening.

“They mayor and I have not discussed that, but if it’s being looked into, I’m sure we’ll discuss it very shortly,” Mullins said.

They chose to move there knowing that there was bars downtown. this idea will acually increase crime, know instead of having somewhere to go and have a few drinks they will be on the road, at someones house, or gathered somewhere on a backroad. at these places there is no security or bouncer to keep minors away. and when peoples children come home to momy and daddy they will have a good story to tell about what a middle aged man did to me. maybe its the reality that i see in this but i see more date rapes, simple assaults, and violent deaths if this goes through.

I honestly could careless at this point...but it would only be FAIR that the casinos have to shut down as well at 2 AM.
One club I know of has been here since the 1970's, they opened downtown long before Darbys, and even before the eola was restored, I myself partied there.
So, if the law is passed, the casinos are BARS too, so they should have the same rules.

ntzmom, I could care less if the casinos close early or not. But I doubt they are responsible for patrons that are littering the downtown shopping area with beer bottles, vomit and (apparently) used condoms.

Lt. Lindsey, I'm sorry to see your name dragged out by the anonymous internet weenies. I hope you have a good day.

I don't think closing early will help the real problem the people that are going to drink and drive are going to do it anyway. I also beleve the Police and Sheriff Dept. did a great job of getting a car theif and convicted fellon off the streets of Natchez.

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 6:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well Ole grand dad, I care..fair is fair.

And do you honestly believe that closing at 2 will stop the litter? Or the vomit? Or the used condoms? That stuff will happen at 2 just as much as does after 2.

ntzmom, closing at 2 might mean there is less of it. Obviously there would be no problem if the patrons of certain places knew how to behave. Bars and drinking do not always equal outdoor litter, condoms, knifings, etc. But certain places cater to a certain clientele.

Posted by southernlady1776 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 6:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree ntzmom they can and will do the same things at 2am as after... people are people a clock does not change that fact... as for the people living downtown... if they wanted quite they should move to the country after all most cities are noisy... these people knew that there were bars and other business that do not close at 5pm they should have thought about all that before deciding to live downtown....

This is becoming a huge problem between businesses and residents living in the area... you cant have it both ways there has to be some give but the business is there to make money not worry who is or isnt getting enough sleep.... we all have choices to make...

Clubs are clubs people will drink as long as the taps are open time has nothing to do with it... granted people need to be more careful what they do and bar owners need to curb as much as possible the ones who get out of hand when they drink but they are adults and people will do what they do and pay for any mistakes they make thats just life... when they walk out the doors of the establishment then it is more or less out of the bar owners hands.... broken bottles and debris is the responsibility of the bar owners around their establishment... maybe they should place trash cans outside the door so they have a place to put their bottles... not this will make a whole lot of differance but it is about all one can do.

I do feel that if the bars have to close at a certian time then the casino should have to do the same simply because they do sell alcohol and in the end if they still want to drink they just gonna go there instead and thats gonna open a whole new can of worms....

I have seen many places do this and in the end when the bar closes they just find somewhere else to go and the party moves but it does not stop the problems at all...

Exactly southernlady. Downtown needs to be thriving, and the clubs do help that! I hate towns where the sidewalks roll up at 5, or 2!
I have seen the bar owners picking up the trash from Dimples customers. I even feel bad for them in the rain and stuff. But everytime I get off work I see them walking down Main, and down wall street picking up bottles and McDonalds bags and stuff.

I believe this is the idea of OLD people that want this town to be a total retirement village.

Ha!!! Good one. But actually I could care less about a "retirement village". I just want a clean village. And one without whooping and hollering up and down the streets at 4:00 am.

You are only forcing people to leave town to have a good town.

why dont you go ahead and push to make this place a dry county?

And I bet Dimples was there with a thriving business before you moved to downtown old grand dad..they opened in 1978 and the building was a bar before that, I know because my parents told me they pertied there.
Maybe you should have thought of that before you bought your place in the city limits.

I don't know about now, but years ago, some of the off duty cops were the ones whooping and hollering and chasing each other down the streets throwing buckets of beer at each other. They probably won't admit it now tho. I'm not giving any names.

ntzmom.. im with you hate those towns where at sundown the streets are deserted looks like something out of a science fiction movie not to mention depressing..

Peace007... thats what I was thinking... I didnt think you could take a bottle or can out of an establishment only plastic go cups??? if they enforced that then it should solve part of the problem .... the bars and patrons win with the time element less trash to deal with and no broken glass place trash cand in the area then it should solve most of the clean up effort... condoms??? ... dude you on your own there... I have no clue about that one... I would go home or a motel but thats just me.... the noise factor hmmm still not gonna settle it... people have loud car systems cranked up... loud cars and trucks passiing by ..drive by shootings when they happen... nope noise is still there and this is any tme of day or night... guess they gonna have to invest in some ear plugs or move to the country and even then there are not guarantees....

Seems like we settled this for them and most everyone is happy...residents well they knew or should have thought about all that before deciding to live downtown... cant have it both ways....

I thought Dimples opened prior to 78, like 74, or maybe that was the bar prior to it becoming Dimples, but the entrance was on the alley side then, I think. Anyone remember the Slave Quarters?

I fell in love with this town because of the party. Every place has a 2am closing time. The late night makes Natchez unique, especially for a state with such uptight laws on alcohol. Look at Oxford, you can't even buy cold beer within the city limits.

Peace007, What's "downtown"?

ntzmom, You sure sound anxious to defend folks making 4:00 am noise that can be heard for blocks (plural). Personally, I see no reason for it other than drunken foolishness which is something I do not want to have near me anywhere, when I am in town or out in the country.

One of the Democrat photographers, back then, used to live as a roommate with the guy that owned the Slave Quarters. I can't remember their names now, but they had an apartment in top of one of the downtown buildings and sometimes they had parties at their apartment.

There is no reason for a closing law here! i know it happens to draw alot of people from surronding areas who come here on the weekends for the reason that we have no closing law!! We have nothing to do in this town and we have just always been a late nite town heck we never even go out till about 12 to hit the dance floor... what fun would that be if we had to leave 2 hours later...then what end up riding around drinking-thats a disaster waiting to happen!! At least the bars are open and we all have somewhere to go-and for the record we always have a designated driver!!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well uptown then, Grand. Main Street, Pearl Street, Commerce...in that area where town is, city hall, the court house and Dimples area. Is that uptown or downtown?

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Lots of people do come to Natchez just to go to the bars. Many times people will come into town and stay at hunting camps during hunting season and go out to the bars when they aren't hunting...well, they may be hunting, just a different kind of deer.

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Peace007, Nope. According to your definition, I don't live there. But I can still (occasionally) hear the noise and quite often (morning walks) see the filth.

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Luv2, it could be that you don't go out until 12am, because you know the bar will be open til daylight. If closing time becomes 2am, you will have to adjust your going out time to 9pm or 10pm, but I think Dimples opens at 7pm. The good thing about Dimples not closing at 2am, allows people working until 11pm a chance to go out.

Posted by trylivinghere (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As my name states, "try living here". Here in the huge town of Gloster, we have no bars. The only one we can go and have a few drinks and shoot some pool are ten to fifteen miles away. Then, you have to a designated driver, which I don't mind. Natchez is too far for us to have to drive to go out, but when I have, Dimples is the place to go! I met my first husband there, who passed away 10 years ago. It was then a very nice place to go and have a good time. I don't understand how the town can expect the bars to close at 2:00am and not the Casinos? They also cater to a group of "less disirable" people. I'm not saying "all" of the people that gamble there are this way, I just know the majority is astounding! People who go there with their social security checks, house payment money, car payment money and spend it till it's all gone. Now, you can't tell me those people don't get drunk, make noise when leaving, LITTER, and cause problems?! If you make one do it, you should make all do it. Again, try living here! LOL...........Oh wait, doesn't the town get money from the BOATS? UM..........that's right, so guys, you can forget them making the boats do anything they don't want to.

Peace as long as i have lived here Dimples has always been the place to go for late night boogie sessions!!! LOL People saying we will just adjust to the time change maybe ur right, but what about the people who cant come out till 11 or 12 because of their work schedule!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Grand at least you only hear the noise occasionally. Do you pick up the litter when you see it?

Perhaps the downtown bars could stop serving beer in bottles, that would cut down on the broken glass, if patrons are sneaking bottles out of the bar and breaking them on the sidewalks.

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Peace007, You can't be serious. You are suggesting that I stop my morning walk in order to pick up trash left by drunks that was sold to them by the bars? The bar owners make money, the drunks go sleep it off and I'm supposed to clean up the mess?

Posted by trylivinghere (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

We are accually used to the little bar we have here closing at 2:00 am, but I assure you, there are times that we all wish it would stay open later! I have seen the sun come up at dimples. Back in the day. HAHA, I think that it would be a shame to make them close at 2:00am. I know there are tons of people who come to Natchez, eat there, rent hotels there, and shop there, JUST TO GO OUT AT DIMPLES! Leave them alone. Pick up the trash like a good neighbor, and put on some headphones at night. Let the kids have fun, cause if you don't, I promise you they will find somewhere else to do it, and it won't be in public where there are police. Let these kids have fun.

Posted by Luv2Shop (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No Grand Dad if the trash is so bad why dont you just contated the owners of the bars and ask them to do a better job of picking up their own trash so u wouldn't have to see it...instead of just trying to make them close at 2.

Posted by padlock (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 8:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah it sounds like a retirement village to me.
Since I have been of age the bars have always stayed open aaallll night long why stop now.
You say the folks are littering and making noise in the area, but isn't it all about the black folks having a good time, maybe just maybe if they were playing Garth Brooks, or some good ole country music i'd be ok for dem good ole boys and gals to party all night long.
Who voted this Mayor in? Seems like he's gonna clean out the town. Sure bar patrons aren't caring about how much noise they make or how much trash they leave behind. With that said how about the people doing community service have them clean it up, better yet have the bar owners to hire some help to keep it clean. You don't just threaten to start closing the bars at 2am, If you can sleep through a storm, you can sleep through the music, stop peaking out of your windows trying to see who is doing what, because as stated before this will not increase or decrease the peace.
What is next.

I have lived all over the place. I know what happens when the towns start rollin up the streets at 12:00 or 2:00am. The kids hit the back roads, drinkin, tearing it up, and looking for something to do. Alot of times the "something to do" isn't what we as parents want them to be doing. This is when you have kids on drugs and drinking and driving and stealing. Wake up people, welcome to 2008 for goodness sakes.

closing at 2am will not stop the "problems" it will only embelish them. i do remember going to dimples and having a really good time, the crowd was all age ranges, the last time i went it was only the younger generation, and the girls dancing on the bars, and flashing people, i had to blink because i wasnt sure if i was in new orleans or at home. thats not what i am into so i left, i didnt start confusion i just left. so instead of closing at 2 and starting major confusion, (because you are elected and you can)just talk to the bar owners and fine them if its not kept clean, and as far as noise, well just know your surroundings before deciding to set up residence.

But, a trip to the picture show can cost a couple, with one small child, $50, if they purchase popcorn and a coke.

Peace007; I believe the name of the Democrat photographer that I know for a fact had an apartment downtown back in the mid-70's was Danny Richardson. He was a wonderful, fun person that unfortunately is no longer in this world today. He is also the photographer that took the popular photo of the Delta Queen and the Ms. Queen docked under the hill that you see all over the place. Just thought you would like to know.

Ok, Here's my two cents since it is no secret that I used to work at Dimples.
There are people at these bars that are making their money off of tips. When you shut the town down at 2 you are shutting their money down as well. Yeah you all can say that these people can go get a job somewhere else, but you produce the jobs and then I'll see that as a viable option. I worked there for 3 years while trying to find another job. 3 YEARS, that's how long it took me to find a job around here. You say the lack of jobs around here has to do with the school system and I am a product of that school system so I know that is a bunch of crap. Some people are just a bunch of scared people who don't want to send their kids to schools with a bunch of "blacks". Well, you know what I went to school w/ all those people and I have turned out just fine! And made a bunch of friends of many races! (yeah i said it so sue me)..

Anyway, back to the bar thing, Find me a job that pays me what I was making at Dimples. I worked 2 nights a week, and made as much as most people around here make in 2 weeks. There aren't enough good paying jobs around here, that's why you have bartenders. And to be perfectly honest with you after 2 is when all the money starts coming in. Not because everyone is so drunk but because that's where everyone goes when everything else is shut down. Our bar back picks up trash every friday and saturday night from one end of the block to the other end. No other bar in the area does it. And we're picking up trash from Bowie's, Andrew's, And Doc's patrons as well. I, myself, have picked up trash with the bar back many a nights so I know for a fact what's out there. I've seen more condoms laying around at schools than out on the sidewalks outside Dimples.

Let the town take away what little bit of young life we have left. That's fine, because as people have said before, we'll just take it right on out to the backroads! There will be way more drinking and driving and way more trouble on your hands!

Wow, tchamp, the girls were dancing on the bar and flashing folks? It has been a while since I've been out, they only danced on the bar back then.

Before my sister died, we used to go out together. She always said she liked going to Dimples and the Cellar, being in the midst of the crowd, because it was like getting hugged with all those people up in there.

Summertime always bring college kids to town and the bars will be full, but it slows down when school starts. Don't fret, that should be real soon.

Posted by happybunny (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 9:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't go out to Dimples or anywhere else at that time of night but I don't think closing early will resolve anything. What difference will 2 or 3 hours make in the grand scheme of things. Dimple's is located on a commercial strip and those that live there, chose to do so.

Very good idea tchamp! You are right, he should talk to the bar owners. That's what this town needs, a lot of communications. Right now there's just too many cheifs and not enough Indians!

Posted by trylivinghere (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 9:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Very good two cents worth. I think it is worth way more than that. My point exactly. If you don't give these kids something to do, they will certainly find something to do that isn't as safe.

This is an awful idea!!! This is what sets Natchez apart from other towns and cities, like Jackson! I think it may have been former mayor, Tony Byrne, who had the foresight to declare Natchez a resort area--this was one of the best things to have happened to Natchez.

If the mayor does this we will simply be another boring Mississippi town. This is what I do not like about north Miss. --that Baptist Bible Belt mentality.

WE DO NOT NEED THIS! NATCHEZ SHOULD REMAIN A RESORT DESTINATION NOT A BIBLE BELT BORE!!!!!!

Posted by KeepinItREAL (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 10:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Natchez is already boring enough, why close bars early to make that matter worse... how much more of a retirement city are you gonna make it?

How late can bars stay open outside the city limits?

Let the citizens of Natchez vote for whether or not they want the bars to close at 2 am on the ballot in November.

Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 10:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I personally don't like going to bars because I don't drink, but that is not the issue here. Why can't bars stop selling alcohol early put a pot of coffee on & sober all these people up. Maybe then they will leave the bar sober, not litter, drive home safely & some of the domestic violence & abuse will stop. People don't seem to realize there are so many things you can do without drinking. If surveillance cameras would show some people how they look making a complete fool out of themselves they would be ashamed to ever pick up a drink.

Peace007 I totally agree with your comment . We're growns here . Let the people of Natchez vote on this issue instead of someone trying to force the issue . The last time I checked we are still in a democratic society . Put it to a vote !

Posted by happybunny (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 10:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

People will drive drunk, litter, and abuse their spouses regardless of what time the bars close. That should not be a consideration for this issue. If they aren't ready to go home, they will simply find another location to continue their party.

i guess our mayor gets his drinking done and in bed by midnight.
this is a stupid, catering to someone thoughts. Natchez has the unique status of being a resort area which gives it 24 hr status. The gulf coast and natchez, that's it. Now somebody with an agenda wants to change it. This is all about the folks in the 400 block of Main. check and see who gave da mayor $ and you will see who is really behind it.

Adams county used to be a dry county, but there were still liquor stores in the city limits. Let's not get too righteous Mr. Mayor. Seen you more than one time with a cocktail in your hand and a red nose.

Charles Cooley had the Slave Quarters on Main St. (entrance from the alley), Danny Richardson had the Watering Hole, now Dimples.

Over the hill - A pot of coffee will not a sober person make. The only thing that will sober a person up is time.

Some people tend to forget that there are quite a few young adults in Natchez who are without children and like to have a few drinks and socialize. My parents certainly do not give me a curfew when I am at home and neither should the city.

Imagine what New Orleans, Bourbon St. would be like with this mentality. There are people living there with sound proof glass and walls that live in the middle of the action and don't mind it a bit. If it gets too much like Mardi Gras they go on a mini vacation for a few days. This town is about to open two new casinos, for them to profit they will have to bring in a lot of out of towners. They will need more than just places to gamble. They will need a good nightlife also, somewhere to dance and drink. I think the old picture show place down town shold be made into a dancehall with a bar. What is needed is more security at the bars and ban the trouble makers. All bars know who they are. This is a stupid idea to stop everything at 2am. A lot of people who get off work at the casino late now and the new ones that will open will want somewhere to go. Downtown should be a red light district with no open container law except sundays. It should be booming with bands playing and action like New Orleans. The old south tourist is dying off, the state is cutting back on tourism funds. This town need to roll with the new tide or get rolled over by it or sunk by the old thinking ways. Remember after Katrina when all the stores, bars and hotels where busy 24/7 for weeks afterward? Nobody complained then or said go home. That is the way we want it now! You let these new casinos open up with no late night nightlife and see what happens. I guess it's an old way or new way of thinking. Any booming resort town New Orleans, Miami and such have great nightlife action. These up to do people around here want to price their houses, land, and lifestyles like they live in L.A, Hollywood, or Miami, lets have the nightlife as such also. Natchez was made famous because of 4 things Gambling, drinking, nightlife and women. That's what was going on here in the 1800's. People were not rideing a horse or boat for days or weeks to see the old homes. They were looking for action and night life. I say give it to the people. Remember you dance with the ones that brought you. And that is what made Natchez famous. The reason this town is rotting on a vine is because we got away from that and what made us famous. This town could have been the Las Veagas of the south if we would have played our cards right. If you going to pass this stupid law, just mess things up real good and do it at 11 pm. If you are going to shoot yourself in the foot just go on and blow it off. What is the dif, your going to need crutches either way.

firered you make a good point, but consider this...the reason Dimples is so popular between 2 and 5 is that it's the only bar still open when people are leaving the other bars at 2 so they stop in for a drink...if all the bars shut down at 2, then maybe Dimples would get all of that business alot earlier --still making the same good amount of money just earlier and the bartenders could get home earlier-- and everyone in town could get some sleep like they want. It's a win-win if you look at it that way. But yeah...if you are in the mood to party it is kind of nice to be able to stay out really late if you want to...it'll be sad to see that go, if it goes.

It would certainly help. If a person drinks coffee then sits awhile they will sober up, at least enough to drive home safely & not kill themselves are an innocent person.

young_in_natchez
If you are grown you should not be given a curfew, you should make good judgment & not only respect yourself but your parents (if you are staying in their home.) Why should they have to worry if you are ok? Don't you think they have had a lifetime of raising you why should they have to continue.

I agree the city should not have the right to tell people to go home, but they do have the right to control what business are ran. So why abuse it when a simple solution can stop the closure.
I do know one thing Dimples & Doc's will sell to underage people. Now if they use a fake ID I don't know but they DO buy drinks!

Ok, I have to agree with most of you - this will not solve the issues of litter, noise and the stench of urine. Dimples has been open forever. I don't go to bars anymore, but I have spent my share of evenings there. This town is small and I understand the downtown residents not liking the noise and litter. BUT, you did choose to live there knowing there are bars down there. I'm sure most of the ones complaining haven't lived in their current homes since before Dimples was opened. In other words, you knew what was nearby when you chose to buy that home. I for one am tired of a few blue hairs (or red - whatever the case may be) trying to decide what's best for our town (based on what they want). There have always been bars and or saloons all through the downtown area. In fact, isn't King's Tavern the oldest building in our city? We need to rethink this decision. The casinos are not going to shut down at 2:00 and I don't think the bars should have to, either. I do agree that they each should have to clean up outside of their establishments, but people litter and urinate all over the town.

Bobaloo, the Slave Quarters, I remember, was to the right of the alley next to the Eola parking lot on Pearl St., across from the Eola. I remember stairs outside and maybe there was an upstairs bar and a downstairs bar. The building is still there and someone may live there, now, but I don't think it had a Main Street address. Could be it was behind another building on Main, or it may have moved to Main Street prior to closing, I don't know. Charles Cooley owned the Slave Quarters? Hmmm, I must have gotten him confused with the bartender...I don't remember the bartender's name, but I thought the bartender owned the Slave Quarters....black hair and a beard, and he was the one I remember being a roommate with Danny Richardson. I remember Cooley too...small guy with really light hair...he had the bar in Belmont Shopping Center...can't recall the name of that one. He may have owned both of them.

Did the Watering Hole's entrance used to open on the alley side with a parking lot across from the alley accessable from Market Street? I didn't know that Danny was the owner of the Watering Hole, or I just don't remember. That was a long time ago. I only went there once when I came home for a visit. The next time I came home, years later, it was Dimples and the entrance was on Main Street. Or that could have been another bar altogether, lol.

Cooley bought Watering Hole from Richardson and called it "Cooley's Phase III. it became Dimples after that.

Actually Dimples was Bojangles first. It has had several names but has been owned by the same family since 74 (i think that's the year). What it was before I do not know (ha I wasn't alive then).

Also, as for the slander you are putting on here overthehill60 :) Minors weren't served on my watch! I made dang sure of that! I love spoiling youngin's fun! In Dimples, the way they got it was someone of age bought it for them but we're (they're) wise to that now and there are a good number of guys out there watching for that to happen! As for Doc's I can't vouch for them, I did hear a nasty rumor a few weekends ago about some 15 year olds in there.. Not 100% sure on that though!

Wasn't Bojangles opened by the Gay family who was connected to the Middleton family by marriage? Now that's small town living for you!!----Actually, closing the bars at 2am will not necessarily stop the complaining of downtown residents. Fat Mamma's won't be open after 2am but look at the controversy with their neighbors over noise, traffic, smells, etc. at any hour. I thought town areas were for transacting business. Maybe we could just do away with parades and festivals and any events downtown that create these things. It could be nice and quiet all the time downtown, not to mention DEAD!

If someone shows a fake ID & you don't know them how do you know how old they are? Also someone under age comes in with someone older how can you know for certain the underage person is not drinking what the legal person is drinking. When you say for certain that this does not happen then you can call me slanderous.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 1:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Whether the bar closes at 2:00 OR 6:00 am, that is a possibility. That's not the issue (the underage drinking). The reason they want to shut them down at 2:00 is because of noise and litter. There will always be people who look older than they are and people who look younger than they are. There will always be someone willing to buy drinks for minors. A 2:00 closing time is not going to change that.

Posted by firered (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 1:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It very well could happen, you just have to know how to spot a fake id. They aren't too hard to find. One girl had a Louisiana license that she used at every bar around, looked real, the only thing is she was underage, showed her as 21 but it was turned up and down, everyone knows that as soon as you turn 21 your license is turned sideways... besides I knew her and knew she was way younger than me. Its hard to tell if someone is really 21 or not.. and if they have a fake id it is on them and not the bar's fault.

About the underage coming in w/ someone of age, like I said there are lots of people watching that. And they are inconspicuous so you never know they are watching you.

And the slander was said w/ a smile :) I was only messin w/ ya!

Oh, that's right, the bar in BelMont Shopping Center owned by Cooley was called Cooley's.

Wasn't Bojangles where Highland Health Club used to be, which at present is a church, and located on Highland Blvd?

Well, I suppose if the bars close at 2 am, the patrons will have to go on to one of the casinos which will be open and serving alcohol 24/7.

Maybe the city could pay all of the in-town clubs to move to Silver Street, into some of those vacant buildings down there and keep all of the whooping and hollering noise under the hill. LOL...don't worry, Mr, everyone could park up on the hill and ride the trolley down to the bars.

The difference between the boat and bars downtown is.... the boat has people hired to pick up trash ALL the time, ALL day and night and SECURITY to make the rift raft go away. If you make to much noise on Isle of Capri property, they have security to make them go away.

Solution: Hire two security people for patrolling the parking lots around Dimples. No bottles outside the bar (but people do bring bottles and leave in their vehicles). Enforce a you leave out, you pay to get back in fee. Will take care of some horny toads leaving condoms in the parking lot.

Other than that meet under the hill at the saloon. No one sleeping down there.

Let me start be saying nothing is, as it used to be. Including downtown nightlife. Do any of you defending staying open past 2 ever go to these places? Let me say i have worked as a bartender and waitress in the past and let me tell you things have changed. People do not know how to act anymore. Some of you should try going and spending an evening in one of these so called CLUBS and you will see at least one fight and if you are lucky it will only be one. Yes, Ntz. needs nightlife but it needs to be better monitored. Like maybe having required real security like Ronnie used to have instead of some guy that wears street clothes and wrestles in his spare time, sorry that is unprofessional. Dimples is the kind of place that if you accidentally bump into someone you might get hit with a beer bottle. Used to, if you got in a fight there, Ronnie would remember and you did not come back. Now its like, quick get out of here before the cops come, see you tomorrow night!

That is the only fair way to decide things - to vote. They should allow the people (who live in the city limits) to vote for this type of action. It shouldn't be allowed because a few people think it's best for everyone. Besides, I'm pretty sure most of the politicians in this town have been to Dimples at some time or another.

Do they even have food?Do piano bars play hip-hop and punk music? I once heard a good country band there but between sets the DJ / owner played nothing but this music. i think I saw more men in just wife-beaters than any where in my life... These are under garments not proper attire for a night out.

So maybe if these places were forced a face lift and become respectable businesses then they could stay open late. But until they can attract a more respectable clientele then they should be put on some sort of curfew.

Shut down the bars at 2:00 a.m. what do we live Mayberry? Otis doesn't even get to the bar until 1:30a.m. How bout we declare Marshall Law and and all electricity must be shut off when the sun goes down. Curfew's for everyone at sunset? Sounds like a place I want to move to. A whole underground society of bath tub gin distributors would hit this town harder than the Swine-Flu epidemic of 1976. People would move all the way from Redlick to serve us they're Bootleg best. I don't know if that's the direction I want a town I love to go. Bathtub gin and Marshall Law. Do you know how many a nite that'll ruin for the true alcoholic. What about them? The little guy that's skin itches when they can't have a drink. What about the people that need to drink past 2am. Ohh this is so frustrating .

It seems to me those who want to close the bars at 2AM seem to have a weak argument and are using any and every excuse they can think of as to why it should be closed at 2am....

Trash in the streets give me a break... yes there is gonna be some trash in any business what about the restaurants that have all that rotting food out back... think the smell stays in the trash bin? guess again! what about the other trash thats left by people cleaning out their car and throw it out the door and windows? or the trash that stray dogs and cats get into and string from hell to breakfast looking for food??/ think thats a pretty site on the manicured lawns??? the bottom line is there is no way to prevent this completely from happening trash is gonna be here no matter how you look at it and no matter how much you think you prevent it from being strewn some of it will naturally be found out of its containers... I do not believe that bar patrons are throwin trash out to make the uppercrust mad... trust me that is NOT whats on their mind at that time of the morning...

Noise... well what about the garbage trucks that come to gather the trash from those big metal bins in back of all those businesses downtown???? those things make a racket for sure as does the truck... again that argument wont hold water...

It seems to me that the only time noise and partying seems appropriate is when it is those who are wanting to call the shots about everyones life in this town... here is a news flash... this is not a communist society ... if you dont like the noise then get out of the area and move to one less inhabited... you should have realized that with residential and business combined there was a chance that you may get woke up and your peace disdurbed by outside noise and if that was the issue you shouldnt have bought a home that close to a business...

As for chruch this is not the topic to bring that up in... this is about bars not who does or does not go to church... and thats all Im gonna say on that !

Leave the bars alone it is bringing money to those who work there and the city its self so stop all the whinning sell your home and move to a quiter area of town if you want more quite...

They can string just as much trash and make more noise from opening till 2am as they can staying open 24/7... so changing the time will not eliminate the noise factor or the trash issue.. So find a better reason than those mentioned...

natchezisawsome... LOL... meet your next ex wife... thats funny... I would settle for someone who is sane, honest and has his act together LOL

Johnny Fowler ( he was Danny Richardson's roommate) renovated and opened the Slave Quarters and later sold it to Charles Cowley. Danny Richardson opened the Water Hole (now Dimples) and later sold it to Clayton Gay, who named it Bojangles. Charles Cowley bought it from Clayton and it became Phase Three. Later Ronny Cox acquired it.

Natchez is a town of character and a town full of characters. I hope that the free spirit and legacy is not legislated away for some puritan standard.............

Will this mean the gas stations will stop selling beer at 2am also? If that happens I will file the impeachment orders myself!

Wrong Nativeson, The Cox's have always owned Bojangles. Not the building but the business...

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What nativeSon said is CORRECT except that Ronnie Cox had a partner, Ronnie bought Bojangles with his brother Darrell Cox. They changed the name to "The Rumble seat", Then to Dimples.
They owned it 50/50 untill 2002. In 2002 Darrell bought Ronnie's share.

That's freaking Hilarious!!!! Ronnie had regular ole bouncers! No one in security outfits! Dimples just recently upgraded to beer bottles. That's a risk at any bar which is why for so long we only sold cans! As for the fighters, ask how many people who are banned from Dimples how many times they have come back in there. Ronnie did not remember them all, no way he could have. How bout you talk about the fights at the rest of the bars? The glass in the door (as well as the door frame) that was busted out at Andrews two weeks ago. Or how many times have you seen an ambulance at Bowies? How bout all the times the cops break up all out brawls in Doc Big Love's? There's going to be fights at any bar you go to. People can't all just get along and peacefully drink a few drinks!

No Problem Firered...Dimples , when ronnie was running it, had plenty of fights. Things are much calmer now.

Dimples is a part of Natchez History. Everyone you meet , almost everyone has very fond memories of Dimples!
I hear it all the time about how they met their spouse there, or how much fun they had there and how now their kids and even grand kids are loving the Dimples nightlife.

I personally love the place, It would just seem strange if Dimples and its all night reputation ended.

Darrell and Ronnie Cox bought the business from Clayton Gay in 1978.
They ran it as Bojangles for a while, then closed due to Mr. G's sweeping them.
They reopened as The Rumble seat, then changes the name to Dimples in about 1987.

And LOL at Village Idiot...aint it the truth? LMAO

This tells me you must be apart of dimples. And I did not say i did not like going to dimples, i just said the bars could use tighter security..... And yes, Ronnie did have a security guard that paced in front of the bar. If the bars had more reliable people managing people while having their FUN then it would be safer yet ok for them to be open so late..Someone very close to me met her husband there. I just think the way things are now the police have better things to do with their time than try to stop two idiots from trying to bash each others faces in. Like the police chases and gunfire.

Maybe this is the reason we are thinking of moving to a town with a population of less than 2000, 30 miles to the nearest bar, miles and miles of nothing and nobody. The fewer people there, the fewer idiots I have to put up with. Thank god for retirement.

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No pbandj, Ronnie DID NOT have a security man pacing in the front.
Darrell hired one for one month to pacify (sp) a complaint, but it was so expensive they could not keep it up.

The clientele that the "clubs" (for lack of a better word like dump) in Natchez get is because of the music. I'm pretty sure that wearing wife beaters and crooked hats to support your favorite jazz club not the case. You play terrible music, you get terrible people in your "clubs" (for lack of a better word like dump) to listen to it. So congratulations Natchez nightlife, consider yourself flushed. If you really want to go to real "clubs" in Natchez and listen to nice music with your friends, GO TO NEW ORLEANS.

I think we should outlaw alcohol all together. Just bulldoze down all of the bars and build something more useful, like missile building sites so that we will have more bombs to bomb little third world countries with and take their oil. Then maybe our gasoline prices will go back down.

The bar next to the bowling alley was The Showboat. I'm not really a drinker but I don't object to other people drinking if that's how they choose to use their time and money. These bars usually only have one product to sell and that is alcohol. For every drink that is sold high price taxes are collected for the sale of alcohol. At least society is gaining something unlike when illegal drugs are sold. I'm not trying to start a moral debate. I'm only saying that a bar is a legal business making a profit and paying a higher than usual tax when purchasing alcohol to sell. This goes into the state coffers to be used for taxpayers benefit.

The simple truth is I could care less what time the bars close. My main concern here is not the time a bar closes but the trash people leave behind after leaving the bar. Like it or not downtown Natchez belongs to everyone even the people that live in the county. There is not one person on this blog that would not have a fit if you took your family to a downtown resturant and your child (grandchild) gets out of car and picks up a d... used condom and ask you "what is this!!!! Come on that is filthy.
Ask yourself .....How many of you would allow people ( strangers) to pull up in your driveway and dump their beer bottles in your yard and then just drive off?

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 11:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Natchez3, you might as well give it up. When I complained about the garbage the folks here said that I should pick it up myself. And you wonder why Mississippi roads and highways have so much trash along them...... Thats the mentality - throw it down and let someone else take care of it.

While I agree with ThornInYourSide that Jesus DOES have EVERYTHING to do Dimples selling alcohol past 2 am. I have to say that knocking down 200 year old historic buildings to construct our nations Missile Defense System, in downtown Natchez, seems like a bad idea. I feel it would send the wrong message to tourist and would not be the kind of Public Works Project that wold truly rejuvenate the downtown area. Sure it would be nice to have V-2 Ballistic Missiles or some other long range Ballistic Missile with severe destrcution capability, in downtown Natchez, I would rather have bars, shops or restaurants and maybe just chase women and go to the gun range on Saturday.

PoonjabnNatchez...hilarious!

We all know that drunk people magically change at 1:59 so by all means, lets make sure we make them go home...oh wait, you cannot make them go home. I'm sure a lot of them live downtown so they'll just continue the party there.

What difference does it make what time they close? The same drunk folks that are leaving condoms and bottles and peeing in your yard at 5:00 am will be doing it at 2:00 am.

Posted by firered (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 11:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree happybunny! I really hope they don't think that this will change a thing! What they should do is enforce the law that says you CANNOT serve someone who is too intoxicated. I see all the time bartenders serving people who are WAY past their limit. You should have seen the guy stumble out of Doc's two weeks ago and get in his car and drive off (he was parked right in front of the door and w/ out exageration it took him 10 minutes to get from the door to the car, put the key in the lock, get in the car and crank it up and pull out). By the way this was maybe 11 PM! As a bartender I think it is their personal resposnibility to see to it that people who are that inebriated not drive, by either calling them a cab or ensuring they have a designated driver.

My point by all of this is that no matter what your closing time is there is always gonna be those people who just get way too drunk and ruin the fun for everyone. That's just how life goes. I do not see enforcing a closing time in Natchez as a way to deal w/ any of our problems of trash in the streets or whiney neighbors who complain about any little thing they can!

Posted by mike8427 (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 11:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

For all those that think the people who live down town are doing all the complaining, you might not realize that city hall is one of the largest recipients of beer bottles on the weekends. And guess what, city hall was there first!

If the bar owners would clean up after the weekend, and the city would keep regular foot patrols this problem would be controlled. The bars have been asked regularly over the past 10 years to help. They have helped some by keeping bottles in the bar, but there are still the people that bring them in from outside.

Posted by firered (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

All the other bars should hire someone who walks around and picks up trash like Dimples does. He makes the whole block around the Dimples and picks up beer bottles and whatever else there may be lying around. If the other bars would do the same that would help out a lot on the situation of trash and beer bottles!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well Grand, I really didn't intend to offend you, but you see the trash downtown, and I don't...so which one of us should pick it up? My point was that whomever sees trash should go ahead and pick it up to keep it from getting so bad. I think people should be more responsible by not littering in the first place, but apparently everyone doesn't think like me. If I offended you, I'm sorry. But what would it hurt for you to pick up a bottle or two during your walk? You could carry a plastic WalMart bag in your pocket, lol, or some rubber gloves for the nasty stuff. Maybe you could get one of those little hands on a stick, so that you wouldn't have to bend over. Wouldn't helping to keep the city beautiful make your walk that much more purposeful?

Perhaps the city could place a couple of trash bins on the sidewalks in front of the bars...(the trash bins could be placed inside attractive decorative scrolled wrought iron holders).

The most important thing that would help keep broken bottles off the sidewalk would be for the bar owners to enforce not allowing the customers to remove bottles from the bar in the first place. They could have someone sit near the exit to say, wait a minute, you can't take that bottle out of the bar. I don't think they should even furnish them a go cup. The customer should stop drinking when they leave the bar, as they can always purchase another drink at the next stop.

I really don't think closing time has anything to do with irresponsible littering or being noisey. The city could station a patrolman on Main Street who could issue tickets for littering and then enforce fines, and that would help! The patrolman could issue a verbal warning to people leavi
