Co-Lin makes administrative changes

WESSON — Copiah-Lincoln Community College President Ronnie Nettles announced changes in the administrative staff and responsibilities effective July 1.

“Our primary goal with the new administrative structure is to highlight the importance of the instructional mission of the college,” Nettles said. “Furthermore, these changes will allow more direct faculty and student communications with the administration at the college.”

Jane Hulon has been named the vice president of instructional services for the college district in a position that includes district-wide supervision of the academic instructional programs, all career and technical programs, the associate degree nursing program, and the distance learning program; and the library services on the Wesson Campus.

Hulon has served as the academic dean of instruction on the Wesson campus since 2004. She previously served as the director of planning and research for the college from 1999-2002. Prior to coming back to Co-Lin, she was dean of academics at East Mississippi Community College’s Golden Triangle Campus (2002-2004). She has previous had positions at Mississippi State University, Mississippi Department of Education and Jones Junior College.

A graduate of Taylorsville High School, Hulon received her bachelor’s of science and her master in education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Southern Mississippi. She received her doctoral degree in higher education administration from Mississippi State University.

Hulon attends Sylvarena Baptist Church where she serves on the church council, teaches the junior high Sunday school class and serves as the children’s activities director. She and her husband, Jim are the parents of two sons, Will and Drew.

Phil Broome has been named dean of administrative services. His responsibilities will include supervision of admissions and records, technology, information systems, research and planning and human resources. Broome has served in several capacities at Co-Lin, including direction of admissions and records (2003-2008), science division instructor (1999-2003), and head football coach (1995-2000) and assistant football coach/science instructor (1990-1994).

Prior to joining the Co-Lin staff, he was a teacher and coach at Brookhaven High School, East Central High School in Hurley, and Columbia High School.

Broome received his bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He received his doctorate in philosophy, leadership and counselor education from the University of Mississippi.

He is a member of the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions and the Mississippi Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Broome has received numerous honors and awards including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Outstanding Young Men of America, National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence in Education Award and Mississippi Association of Coaches Coach of the Year.

An active member of the community, Broome is president of the Wesson Attendance Center Booster Club and deacon and Sunday school teacher at Wesson Baptist Church. He and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of two sons, Tyler (wife Lauren) and Caleb.

John Dickerson has been named vice president of the Simpson County Center. Dickerson has the responsibility of overseeing all aspects of the center’s operation. This includes instructional programs, operation of the library, learning center, business office, auxiliary services, physical plant and security; and ensuring the delivery of student support programs and counseling services.

He has served as dean of the Simpson County Center since 2007. Dickerson previously served as the senior associate director of admissions and scholarships at Mississippi State University. He has had other positions at MSU including associate director of admissions and scholarships, director of enrollment services and associate director of enrollment services.

Prior to joining the MSU staff, Dickerson worked at Mississippi College as associate dean of students, associate director of admissions, acting director of recruitment and admissions counselor.

He is a graduate of Hinds Community College and Mississippi College. Dickerson received his master’s in counselor education from Mississippi State University and will receive his doctoral degree in community college leadership in December.

Dickerson is a member of the Mississippi Community and Junior College Academic Officers Association and an All-USA/Guistwhite Academic Team Selection Judge for Phi Theta Kappa International.

Dickerson and his wife, Christy, are the parents of two children, Tyler and Kate.

Teresa Harrison has been named vice president of the Natchez Campus. She has served as the dean of the Natchez Campus since 2006. Harrison is responsible for the day-to-day administrative decisions of the campus and planning for the long-term growth of the Natchez Campus.

Prior to joining the Co-Lin staff, Harrison served as vice president of Student Services at Moultrie (Ga.) Technical College, Director of Student Services at Athens (Ga.) Technical College, undergraduate program coordinator at Warnell School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia and employee relations and development coordinator, new employee services coordinator and human resources assistant at Mississippi State University.

A graduate of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Harrison received her bachelor and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce, board of directors of the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society, the board of directors for the Natchez Little Theater and is a member of the Mississippi Community and Junior College Academic Officers Association.

She has two sons, John and William.

Brenda Smith has been named dean of student services. She replaces Gwyn Young who retired after 33 years of service.

Smith has been a member of the Co-Lin staff as an instructor and chairperson to the Heath and Physical Education Division since 1996. She also served as the college’s women’s tennis coach for nine years. Her teams won the MACJC State Championships and NJCAA Region 23 Championships on 1999 and 2002 and competed in six National Tournaments. The Lady Wolves were the No. 1 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 1999, 2003 and 2004; and No. 2 in the Nation in 2000 and 2002. Smith was named the Mississippi Association of Coaches Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2002.

She is currently the president of the NJCAA Tennis Coaches Association, a United States Professional Tennis Association certified teaching tennis professional, and a member of the Copiah-Lincoln Educators Association and the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges.

Smith has been named to Who’s Who Among Junior College Educators and Outstanding Women of America and was inducted into the Cloud County (Kan.) Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Smith is a graduate of Cloud County Community College and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi College in Clinton. She and her husband, Steve, are the parents of two sons, Matt and Josh. They are members of Wesson Baptist Church where she serves as youth director.
