Revonne Corey, 12, left, rides his new Lowrider bike on Choctaw Street as friend Kalen Griffin follows Friday afternoon. Below, Corey sits on his royal blue Lowrider with chrome extras.

Natchez boy is cruising in style

Published Monday, August 18, 2008

NATCHEZ — When the Dart landed on Choctaw Street Revonne Corey was riding fly.

With the blue sparkling bows still on it from when it was given to him a week ago, the 12-year-old was cruising the streets with his best friend Kalen Griffin on his new Lowrider bicycle.

The blue bike — Corey’s favorite color — had chrome handlebars, white wall tires, a spare tire on the back, nearly 70 spokes in each tire, a suede banana seat, two rearview mirrors on the right side and one of the left, a tail pipe and a steering wheel.

Corey gave the chrome steering wheel a tug and said it’s hard to ride the bike with it, though it’s apparent he likes it all the same.

So similar to a little car in many ways, Corey said he plans to take care of it like a car.

He even got some cleaning spray to polish the bike.

And getting his hands dirty when it comes to working with bikes is something Corey relishes.

His aunt Alfredia Knight said he’s always fixing bikes.

Corey said he’s worked on about eight of them.

Knight said his uncle used to work on bikes when he was younger.

“He followed in the footsteps of his uncle,” she said.

Corey said it’s fun for him to do and Knight said it keeps him busy.

Plus, having that many bikes around can be very accommodating.

Griffin was actually riding around on one of Corey’s old bikes.

Though Corey’s birthday isn’t until October, Knight said his mother gave it to him for a few reasons.

“He didn’t get a vacation this summer, so it was a vacation gift,” Knight said.

Also, it was an early birthday present.

Corey, when he saw the bike propped up outside, didn’t even think it was for him, he was so surprised.

“I didn’t know who it was for at first,” he said. “I thought it was for my uncle but then I found out it was mine so I rode it.”

Knight said it wasn’t hard figuring out what Corey might want as a present.

“He stayed online every night looking for a low rider,” she said.

Now, how do you put a stereo on it so it can be a complete lowrider....needs at least 1 woofer and tweeter...and a 6 cd changer. mount the battery on the back of the banana seat and put Xzibit in the stereo and get down with it.....be riding fly for sure.

redman, let hope this kids don't start putting radios on bikes. Its already loud enough in Natchez with all the dang cars blaring their music. What happened to the sound ordinance? Did it expire, get revoked, or does the city just not enofore it?

Shooting is a sport too.

But it is against the law to shoot your neighbor. So, it should be against the law to blair your music loud even on our highways. I drive a lot looking at jobs and have to drive around people that blair their music on the roadways. keep it to yourself in your auto and I will not blair the Barney theme song at you. That disgust me so bad. Teh other day I passed a guy that had earplugs in while he was blairing his noise...some kind of rap crap that only thugs and trash understand, and his music was probably around 110 decibels....

I wanted to prcatice my sport on him but that would be illegal......

Mike,
I understand where your coming from, however I too am a car audio fanatic. I compete in several different states, but I do not go around blasting others, especially in residential and business areas. Now the highway thats a different story. Its just so hard to hold back 2000 watts of power. Just be glad my other friends live on the coast, there closer to 30,000 and 40,000 watts. Its a sport, but like other sports there a time and a place for it.

wow, I didn't know I was trash because I listen to rap music. I wonder what would I be if I listened to rock or heavy metal. Might as well just drop out of school and start selling drugs so I can fit your stereotype.

Now this is something positive that this little boy is doing and its always one person that has to say stupid dumb sh*t. Boy you ride around on your bike and if there is anyway you can put some loud music in it you do it. The only reason why yall putting negative comments on here is because he is black.

Slow news day, huh? Anyway, I'm glad he's enjoying his new bike. He might want to never let it out of his sight during the day and lock it up at night if he wants to keep enjoying it since all of Natchez knows about his fancy new bike now.

Wow...I can remember my Schwinn with multi-colored straws in the spokes and a playing card flippin' thinking that was cool!...what did I know...goes to show you that no matter how much we gripe about the standard of living in the US...we kick whatever is second.

mike, USMBOY is referring to redusm's post:

"some kind of rap crap that only thugs and trash understand"

He doesnt need to change his name, he makes a valid point, as a current USM student and fan-he doesnt embarrass me.

How did this article get turned into something negative, some folks wake up on the wrong side of the bed, I guess

USMBOY, I don't see anyone in this article talking about rap or rock, quit making up stuff and crying about it. And change your name b/c you are embarassing the real USM fans.

I see it now, it was still a bad comparison. He doesn't make a valid point at all, dropping out of school and selling drugs b/c he listens to rap? What kinds of comparison is that?

they are on here showing how this little boy got a bike for his birthday, and all u ppl can comment on is how loud it would be if he put a radio on it. these ppl in natchez are so negative about everything, nothing good to say at all. let it go thats what nothing good every happens here. grow up and act like adults and ppl may actually begin to treat u like that. congrats on ur new bike. i hope that it is everything u ever wanted. and if u wanna put a radio on it then so be it. it is, of course, ur right!!!

mike8427, Thats exactly my point. Why does what music you listen to have to be a direct representation of your lifestyle. Why do i have to be a "thug" or "trash" because of my musical preference. Can you please explain this to me. I would never change my name becuase i am proud of my school and proud of what i have accomplished.

OK FIRST OF ALL IT SEEMS TO ME THAT NTZ IS STILL RACIST. I AM A 24 YEAR OLD BLK AND EDUCATED WOMAN, OH I KNOW WHAT THIS CITY IS ABOUT. SAD TO STAY I HAVE BEEN LIVING HERE ALL MY LIFE AND I KNOW WHAT A RACIST IS. SEEMS TO ME THAT "YOU PEOPLE" WANT TO GET ON LINE AND TALK ABOUT BLKS LISTENING TO RAP AND SAGGN PANTS. HAY GO TO THE TRAILOR PARKS AND YOU WILL EXPERIENCE THE SAMETHING FROM THE WHITE COMMUNITY. WHITE BOYS WANTING TO BE BLK AND WHITE GIRLS WANTING BLK GUYS. CRYSTAL METH COMPARED TO SMOKING WEED?????? SO DONT COME AT ME WITH THIS RACIST MESS UNTIL YOU LOOK AT ALL SIDES

Beautiful, I agree with you 100%, there are probably as many white idiots out there with blarring radios as blacks. I don't care which color they are, what type of music they listen to, or who they choose to date - I JUST DON'T WANT TO HEAR THEIR MUSIC. That is my point, this was never a racial issue.

Posted by XXBeautifulDisasterXX (anonymous) on August 19, 2008 at 5:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

this was suppose to be about a boy having fun on his new bike. then it turned into racism.

just because you listen to rap doesn't mean you're trash or whatever. just means you like the music. i'm white, i have a nice home, & i'm not poor but i love to listen to rap. so what i don't understand everything they say...but the beat is freakin awesome! i'm gettin speakers for my car so it will go boom boom. but i know to turn it down in neighborhoods, stop lights, & the important places.

I will say this much. I have been a hardcore metal fan my whole pre teen to adult life. I was pulled over and givin a ticket because my music was too loud. I have no big speakers or boom boom. Just a stock radio. I have never heard or saw some one get a ticket let alone pulled over for playing rap too loud. the kind that shakes your windows when you are close to them. Fair or not? Not to mention the horrible cursing that my kids hear when its playing. You tell me whats wrong with this picture.

We live in the south. Everything is a race issue here. Welcome to dixie. White or black, some one will have something to say about it.

Posted by lowrider (anonymous) on August 19, 2008 at 11:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Demise i know of several people who were issued tickets even one was impounded for having received several tickets within a year, they lisyen to a variety of things. But the rule of thumb if you can hear it over 200 feet away its a violation.
