First shelter opens in Adams County
Published Sunday, August 31, 2008
NATCHEZ — The first shelter in Adams County will open at 6 p.m. today.
Parkway Baptist Church, 117 Seargent S. Prentiss Drive, is opening its doors to evacuees and can house 250 individuals.
Volunteers began setting up the shelter at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Once Parkway Baptist is full, evacuees will then be sent to Community Chapel Church of God, 101 Oakland Drive.
The third shelter to open will be Pilgrim Baptist Church, 117 Pilgrim Road. The fourth is First Baptist Church, 150 D’Evereux Drive, and the sixth is the Fourth Street Church of Christ, 29 Fourth St.
The final shelter to open will be the Steckler Multipurpose Center building, 311 Liberty Road.
Adams County Chapter of the Red Cross Angie Brown said the Steckler building, which holds 300 people, is being reserved for local residents who have been displaced from their homes.
Brown said she believes Parkway Baptist will fill up rapidly and shelters will continue to open through the night.
City and county officials have issued a mandatory evacuation for all mobile homes and unstable residences effective noon Monday.
Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown has issued a curfew effective for 6 p.m. on Monday.
Anyone on the streets after the curfew is in effect will be moved along by law enforcement officers.
The county courthouse and all county buildings will be closed Monday.
As of Sunday afternoon, the Isle of Capri casino has closed after receiving an order from the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
Isle of Capri Vice President and General Manager Tony Scudiero said he does not know when the casino will reopen and that safety is the only thing on his mind right now.

Will it really be mandatory to leave your mobile home.During Katrina the winds was strong, they didn't issue a mandatory evacuation.

Picture_music101...sigh, where do i start with you? Adams county is a designated evacuation county for the state...maybe you should go north...permanently. We only have one walmart but it isnt the only place to by food so dont fret i'm sure they wont "eat up all our food".
I'm glad that we can be helpful to complete strangers, friends, and family. Thanks for pumping money into our local economy.

Is a 6 p.m. curfew necessary? Have we been declared a state of emergency? I think Ronnie Brown is on a power trip!!

Picture_Music101: Didn't your mama teach you any better?
How would you like to be in their shoes? (the evacuees).
You probably would expect to have the red carpet rolled out for you... So much for the "southern" hospitality that we are supposed to be noted for... Thank God everyone in the Natchez/Vidalia area is not as selfish and mean spirited as you.... *Warcraftman: We actually do have 2 Wal-Marts in this area: one in Natchez, and one in Vidalia....so picture_music101 wasn't too far off base on that remark.

Hardcorps, your information is wrong. How do I know, I just left Parkway. You are more than welcome to come volunteer!

Bowie's Tavern will be open and serving food so that evacuees staying in the hotels nearby will be able to come in and order some food. There has not been a closing time established. We will stay open as long as the city will let us so that we may accomodate as many people as possible. We are still unsure how the curfew will apply to restruants.
