Natchez pharmacy burglarized

Published Saturday, February 2, 2008

NATCHEZ — When two men broke into Bill Ernst’s pharmacy, they appeared to have only two things on their minds — get drugs, and get out.

“They just busted out the glass and walked through the door,” Ernst said.

Ernst Pharmacy was burglarized just before 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Maj. Jody Waldrop said the two men used what looked like a pipe to break out the glass on the door.

Waldrop knows how the two men gained entry to the pharmacy because Ernst’s son had the entire place wired with security cameras.

The alarm, also installed by Ernst’s son, notified the sheriff’s office of the break-in and deputies were able to respond within approximately four minutes, Waldrop said.

And while deputies were able to respond quickly, they were not quick enough.

Waldrop said he estimates the burglars were in the store for less that one minute.

“They were in and out,” he said.

And while the two men were acting quickly they also made the most of their time in the store.

Ernst said the two men knew what they were looking for.

“They walked right to what they wanted,” he said.

Hydrocodone and cough syrup containing codeine were the only items reported stolen.

“They just wanted the drugs,” he said.

Ernst said he would need to do an inventory of the store’s supply to determine exactly how many pills had been stolen.

However, he estimated that the number would be well over 100.

In terms of dollars, the pharmacy pays very little per pill, but on the black market their price is greatly inflated.

Waldrop said the same pills on the street will sell for between 5 to $10 a piece.

And while Waldrop said the surveillance video will help the investigation, he also said he hopes the large influx of pills on the street will also be noticed.

“It’s bound to get someone’s attention,” he said.

Ernst said he was not surprised when he received the early morning phone call telling him his business had been burglarized.

He said the same thing happened last year but the criminals were unable to break the glass.

After that attempt Ernst said the shatterproof glass was replaced with a different type of glass — apparently one more breakable.

But Ernst has a plan.

“We are going to get some type of glass that can take a beating,” he said. “And probably some more cameras.”

I have no rock hard evidence....I may be wrong... this is just an my personal opinion:
BUT the FBI needs to be called in and track down the ones who are working for the police, govt, etc that allow these drug thugs to continue with their business. It is surely padding some pockets of a few people who think they are above the law and they need to be brought down.

When you have a people talking on the streets about who is selling drugs and who they are selling for and who is backing them up, it is just sickening. People on the street know a whole lot, but none will open their mouth , because they know it won't do any good and the thug will find out and come hunt them down.

I sure hope the children, grand-children, nephews, neices, etc. of these drug dealers/sellers get some of this candy they think is so good for everyone else children, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, dads or moms.

This madness needs to STOP!!! People open your dang mouths. Call the law and if you don't trust them... call the state highway, FBI or every government office you can until they stand up and take notice that the MS/LOU has a problem that they can't or won't control.

This is just getting sickening...These people work hard for what they have & thugs try to destroy it for a few dollars in drugs.I agree with you crazynms....we need some outside help on these crimes being the cheif of police seems to not have a clue how to solve this problem.I take it the rich kid was at home again.

Boy these guys just passed up the middle man and went straight in for the drugs. If these cameras are at ALL any good they should have their guys by weekends end!

"Waldrop said he estimates the burglars were in the store for less that one minute."

This is the frightening part, because the authorities got there within four minutes, which I would consider to be a good response time, but not for these thieves. For those who say, "well I just turned away for a minute and it was gone", that's all it takes is a minute. Be careful out there.

My ex was addicted to hydrocodone, probably still is. I remember his drug dude stopping by and they would talk openly around me. I was convinced at the time that my ex needed these pills because he had "pains"; he told me the doctors around here weren't sympathetic enough so he had to get them on the black market. He would get 50-90 at a time, so the cop up above who stated that the "large influx of pills" on the street would be noticable is uninformed. There are thousands of these little white, pink, and blue pills floating around at this very minute. This type drug is abused by folk on the lowest money scale to the highest. Yes, friends, I remember some people in this area in high places doing these things because they falsely believe that if a doctor prescribes them, it's fine, even if you get them on the black market! This is an epidemic that obviously the cops don't know enough about.

There have been several people in Natchez killed from hydrocodone overdose.

This burglary problem is nothing new, back in the 80's I had to move my business from Franklin St. because the vandalism and burglaries, plus dangerous people hanging out on the street was just finally too much for me. They would simply smash in the front door and take whatever they wanted. I made police reports, and it never did any good.

Maybe the police need to quit riding around and sleeping in those cars and get out and WALK a beat. Make themselves part of the neighborhood they supposedly patrol. NPD has too many cars and not enough physically fit policemen actually out on the street. They're all, with a few exceptions, fat as momma cows and couldn't chase a grandmaw down. It's pathetic the status of physical fitness of policemen and women. I really think they spend too much time on their butt in those cars. I often see them sitting idle in parking lots either doing paperwork, sleeping, or talking on their phone. Get out of that car and walk around and find out what's going on out on the street.

If Natchez police has so many cars that they can just leave them parked, and empty, to scare people into driving slower, which to me is ridiculous, then NPD has too many cars. Sell some of those cars and hire a few more officers and put them out on their feet WALKING. It's obvious they are not out on the street fighting to arrest these guys and clean up our streets.

I remember trying to turn in my ex's pushers and the cops would laugh in my face! Even with bruises on my face, I'd try to get them to help me. To no avail. So I just left Ntz and moved to Vidalia. I finally got the protection I needed! I am still dumbfounded about begging them with tears in my eyes to help me and they'd just laugh while watching him drive away. I swear on my grandmothers grave it happened every time. They'd just sit in their car and laugh. That's why i don't trust the city cops in Ntz.

well that's one way to get drugs! WOW!!! these guys had to had an inside connection... gettin in a pharmacy and out in ONE MINUTE with the BIGGEST NAMED KNOWN DRUG on the street is not easy!! have ya'll ever paid attention to ALL the bottles of different drugs behind the counter? it would take forever to actually go in and grab exactly what your looking for when not knowing exactly where the "good stuff" is kept... i'm surprised they didn't go for the Oxycontin's and xnax also! them things a buck a milligram (oxy's for an 80 milligram is an $80.00 pill for just one!) if they where looking to steal the drugs to make money off them they would've grabbed it all! these people where just wanting to get high!

hope they are caught!!! ;)

You get what you pay for in this world. Our Policeman and women are very lowly paid. They barely make a living. You cannot attract and keep good people when you don't pay them. Their salaries should be at least doubled. You would then be able to hire and keep good policeman. Another thing, this town is too wrapped up in play ing the race game. Hire good people and forget the color of their skin. We need to hire a Mexican or Asian American police Officers and Chief so the race baiters will shut up. I know of several towns in Texas our size that will only hire policeman with a degree in criminal justice, and they pay them accordingly. They have a fine force. I feel sorry for our current Chief and the officers on the street. Just read the above letters, they get NO respect and NO rewards for doing things right. Maybe we should all just start taking care of our own neighborhoods, start around the clock watches, whatever. Hang these dopeheads where they are caught.......Just saying.....

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 4:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mucasplug, that's a good way to waste money, police and workers get paid for what they are worth, if you do a good job and stay on the force, you get promoted and paid well, they have good benefits, and most places let them eat free, I know I give police a discount.. I'm all for supporting the police. You can't say the police force is racist oriented, most all the police are black, from the car riders, to the detectives. I have to say that the times I have called the police they do show up quick, so I'm not saying they are negligent, just need improving, just like we as citizens should help out more, and yes, take care of our own neighborhoods. I do know that the police need better training facilities, they don't even have a decent judo mat to practice arrest and wrestling techniques, much less full out martial arts practice. Maybe they should utilize local martial arts facilities for improved fitness and skill. I would imagine local martial arts instructors would be glad to help them out.

is'nt anyone a little concerned that Crzynms said they hoped that drug dealers children would injest their "product"? what a horrible thing to say and not one person noticed?!

peaceout, I guess that's a comment on how well we "scan" these posts, because I never picked up on that. It is a horrible thing to say, I would never wish drug use on any child! These are the children who need our help to escape the terrible life their parents seem bent on giving them.

I was thinking the same thing as I was just reading all the comments Peace... I don't think its a good thing to wish that on anyone's child whether they be a drug dealer or not. Its not the child's, grandchild, niece or nephew's fault that the drug dealer is out there selling drugs. You should be ashamed crazynms.

((Mucasplug)) paying double the salary MIGHT bring in GOOD COPS but then again i would bet it would just bring in that many more CORRUPT ONES (they love little towns with good pay with the thought of being able to "run" things)

((Krogers)) i agree with you the police do their jobs and do them right then promotions, more pay, etc. will come. I don't agree with the young cops who think their s@&% don't stink all because they have a badge on and treat a person just any way! I also don't agree with the older cops who think they have done their "good deeds" for the town and just sit on their butts and chill till retirement time.(NOT SAYING that ALL COPS ARE THIS WAY! I KNOW MANY OFFICERS YOUNG AND OLD THAT DO THIER JOBS! AND TREAT A PERSON WITH RESPECT AS LONG AS THE PERSON IS RETURNING THE RESPECT!!) I agree that the police SHOULD GET MORE respect for the good they do. I'm sure, how ever most of the police officers have gotten in their minds 'whats the use of busting our tails when a judge and/or the DA will just slap the criminals on their hands and send them on the way!'

((PEACE)) I was JUST FIXING TO TAG THAT ONE. I figure since I'm on a roll may as well put my two cents in on that one.

((Crzynms)) How can you WISH something so horrible on A CHILD? What drug dealers and drug users do are on them but to wish it on a child!! That's just wrong! A child can not stop the selling or the use of illegal drugs.

Umm, those of you who are postulating an "inside job", most pharmacies shelve the drugs alphabetically, with the narcotics in a separate place, also alphabetically. It wouldn't necessarily take someone with "inside" knowledge to pull something like this off--only someone who knows their abc's.

Posted by momoftwokids (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well that rules out anyone i know!!! ha ha!!1

Posted by buttercup26 (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 5:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

((msfixit)) IT WOULD TAKE ALOT MORE THEN JUST THE KNOWLEDGE OF ABC'S!! (I do not agree one bit with that one.) I catch myself while waiting to pick up medicine trying to read the labels on some of them bottles and it's just impossible! As far as keeping the narcotics separate i sure didn't know that till you spoke of it! how would just some random "crackhead" (i call them that because well they stealing drugs that's the name they get) break into a pharmacy and go STRAIGHT TO THE NARCOTIC SECTION grab exactly what they came in for and get out with in a min??? You can speak that till you turn blue in the face lol some one some how helped out...

(CS Guidry) If I'm right, the subject pharmacy is outside of the City Limits, and depending on the "status" of units available, four (4) minutes is not a bad response time for a sheriff's department after their initial notification! Also note, that the ownership of the pharmacy contacted the ACSO and not an alarm company and I can speculate that there was a time lapse also! Another point is that the responding unit (s), may not been in the near area of the pharmacy.

are you all so dumb, its the world we live into today folks the law cannot be everywhere I am not a supporter of the chief of police either, but its not his fault this store was in the county according to the ND, wonder how that happened county right in the middle of town. No really folks its takes the help of all of us. I was told a lady reported to Natchez police about the burglars going in her yard from the drug store and they didnot show up or help the sheriff deputies maybe a rumor Also take note it only takes a minute to do a deal like this they were probably watching the police come by and then did it who knows but the answer is more police on the street not tax money for tourist what do you folks want Natchez it is election time Yes we need changes at the Police dept maybe elected chief Again we have to help out times have changed our poor innocent town is not the same safe place like other places (jackson, Monroe, Baton rouge) crime is here to stay like drugs and on that drug pushers have rights also police cannot just arrest them You people need to get on a jury or at least go to court and watch It will make you want to hang the person on trial but what do we do turn them loose.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 7:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

In a hospital the narcotics and drugs considered "addictive" are ususally kept locked up and one person on duty has the key. Is it like that in a drug store? They really would have to know what they were after, but they could have just been customers and watched where the druggist went in the store. This particular store is not set up like Walgreens or CVS - it is a real drug store and they don't have the candy, tshirts, books, etc. - only drugs and some other medical supplies.

I finally found my Natchez/Adams County Map. Highland is the border between county and city - Ernst Pharmacy is on the county side, Tara Apts. on the city side. Briarwood Rd. is the point where the city ends for the south side of Highland, so Dr. Timm's, Dr. Obriens, etc. would apparently be in the city. Strange but true!

Posted by rushinghjr (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 10:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Added Point! Being that the pharmacy is in the County, it seems like a city unit or units would have responded also if they would have been in the vicinity! I'm sure that the NPD officers are commissioned by the AC Sheriff!? If not, it definately seems like they would be! I'm sure that the city units monitor ACSO units and vice-versa?

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 10:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The SO can have jurisdiction inside city limits as well as outside because technically they are over the entire county. NPD can only operate inside the city limits unless in hot pursuit or specifically called, or maybe if no SO unit is close. I have never felt that the SO and PD worked well together.

Posted by rushinghjr (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 10:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Normally, they should work together! I have and I am still involved in law enforcement! The NPD Officers should be commissioned by the AC Sheriff. The Sheriff and Mullins should be working together! In Adams County, deputies, of course, cover the county. That is the same in Louisiana with parishes. Well then, maybe the city government needs to be changed and let County Government run the City. Thus, we would combine the NPD with the ACSO! I'm that Sheriff Brown could handle the added job?

Posted by rushinghjr (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 11:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sentence 4 of last entry should have the word "sure" added before the word "that". That would make more sense!

a while back i went to that new section 8 office going towards downtown.. it was a little after 8 and a couple of cars where in the parking lot, with not knowing what time the office actually opened i went towards the door pulled it open but didn't see no one in there so i shut the door i turned around and it looked like an ACTION MOVIE! NPD AND SO where there in a matter of seconds! Almost messed my pants! the office didn't open till 9 and a rug had been stuck between the doors keeping them from locking!! hahahaah!!! i never knew i flipped the alarm! DIDN'T HEAR A THING!

point being; NPD AND SO do work together I guess we just have to catch them on a good day!

((Omega)) you re-typed some of my comment so let me come to my own defense. As you probably know from many of my post I tend to always find some type of humor out of any situation not really takin much seriously, but I AM FAR FROM STUPID. MISINFORMED? I'll agree to a certain level. That's why I don't hesitate to ask questions.
BUT IF I'M READING YOUR COMMENT RIGHT.... You say ""Lets see if you think the police are being paid what they are worth when the blue flu hits""
You must also be **MISINFORMED** OR JUST PLAIN STUPID. From ALL of the robbery's and break-ins it's starting to look like family's are already starting to protect their loved ones and property.. Seems they are even starting to look out for OTHER'S loved ones and property also...
I got to ask you a question though.. You call it the blue flu? is that aka maybe a strike?? Are you hinting around to something that may happen in the near future?

sorry... it just burns my buddie that these morons are allowed to do this and we are paying the salaries of some of these dealers. That comment was to reflect, that if it was one of their family members who died of an OD, they would use their last breath to find out where the drugs came from and make the charges stick.

Police are not paid enough. Why not get rid those high paid city workers, who ride around ALL DAY with 5-7 people in a truck doing nothing, except harassing women and sleeping. Half of them get off at noon or so and they don't get clocked out until 3 or 5pm. Or they clock in, in the morning and go back home on city time and sometimes in the city truck to pick up kids and take to school or to lay around with the latest girlfriend.

The money they pay these lazy bums could go to police officers or firemen. This is just MHO

I would greatly assume that the perpetrators will leak some hint to others (witnesses) as to this offence, less they use drugs for themselves only.

After several months of viewing articles and scanning over the comments, most of the same people have responded. You people that have nothing good to say, only negative talk, talk about everything that others are doing wrong according to your thinking, actually posting personal family tragedy about people, I have a question for you. What are you doing to improve our community, the town/county/parish in which you reside? It would appear that you would be seeking employment in these positions that you know so much about or getting involved in our local government that you can change all the things you speak about that's being done wrong. Oh, I let me guess, I bet your unable to work or be productive in your community. The only kind of energy you have is negative. I guess you people think that because CSI solves a crime in one hour, everyone should! You people just have time on your hands when you need to apply for the positions that you have so many bad things to comment about.

If you people knew so much about Natchez/Adams County, you would be aware of the city/county limits. Have any of you ever participated in the law enforcement training programs, Leadership Natchez Program, or maybe just attended a city/county meeting to know what going on in our community? Probably not.

Change your attitude. Get a life. Get involved, make change or shut up.

leona, why if you were taking a day of relaxation at the park or attending the parade would it make you angry that the chief wants to relax a little too? I have heard that the best ideas come from a relaxed mind, if we sit at our desk and bang our heads all we get are headaches. Cut the man some slack, he deserves a break.

i was not taking a relaxing day in the park...who has time for that. oh yeah, the police chief does. whatever. i was running kids from point a to point b, trying to get them settled before i went back to close everything down at work. i was not hanging out at the parade, i saw him when i was walking into town after i had gotten home from work to meet my kids that were at the parade with friends. i had gotten home from a job i love and take great pride in as well as all of the volunteering i do for the city of natchez, the historic foundation, garden club fundraising (the only projects i work on are to benefit the city of natchez-i could care less whose daughter is queen) and work i do at my kids' school. sorry, i guess i am just a little on edge due to the fact that i have a personal relationship with several of the people who have been victims of the robberies. but you guys make me feel much better. what am i so worried about? everything is fine and i guess i am being completely unreasonable. if i have a job to do, i stay until it is finished, work through lunch, late, go in early, work weekends...my husband has a deadline, he works all night to get it done. but this is reg. job stuff, you know, not life and death stuff...not dealing with a repeat offender on the street.

Why did the Democrat wait until Saturday to report the robbery when it took place Wednesday night?

hmmm, that old word of mouth gossip grapevine may be better than we realize. Keep talking folks...some of it is bound to be true.

leona, In my humble opinion, I think when the chief reads your comments, he will just scratch his head and think...leona is working way too hard and needs a break before she makes herself ill, and then...who will take care of her family, work her job, and volunteer for her?

Peace007 it's blue flu = police are sick and tired of working their butts off trying to make everyone happy and unable to feed their family and pay their bills. The people of Natchez seem to not understand that crime will occur no matter what. The police officers and detectives miss out on spending time with their families, miss out seeing their kids grow up and are going deeper in debt every day. That makes the offices very sick after awhile and they may come down with the blue flu. The law enforcement officers in Natchez and the rest of the country are sort of like the military. Law enforcement is the ONLY thing standing in the way of total chaos. Across the country the types of crimes tracked by the FBI are solved at a rate of about 22%. Here in Natchez these crimes are solved at a rate of 55 to 60 %. Maybe the mayor, board of aldermen and citizens need a couple of days without any law enforcement to see what these brave men and women, who sacrifice so much of their lives trying to help the city, really do. When the thugs are running rampant through and burning the city down the citizens and BOA will see that law enforcement is worth spending the money on. Is this what it’s going to take to get law enforcement pay up to where it should be? How many of you posting here know that an officer with 14 years under his belt trying to support a family of 4 make just about $100 too much a month to draw food stamps? Do you expect GOOD honest people to take the job? The city could keep good officers that are leaving for higher paying jobs and attract better educated people to apply if they would stop trying to starve the officers and their families. You police bashers have no idea how dedicated many of these officers are. Yes, most would put their lives on the line to protect you. Even though you are so much smarter, make so much more money than they do, and have nothing better to do than sit at you computer and bash away at them. To those that believe law enforcement is paid what it’s worth consider the following. Deputies at he sheriff’s office make starting pay that is about $5000.00/yr. more than a starting police officer. The starting police officer will handle about as many calls for service in 2 days than the deputy handles in a week. If law enforcement didn’t exist for a couple of days you would find these men and women are worth more than their weight in gold. It’s time to pay police like your life depends on it because when you really think about it, it does!

Omega I agree with you. Police officers do not get the recognition nor pay that they deserve. I'm actually quite fond of the police. I haven't had to call them many times, but when I did...they were there in an instant. I for one hope that blue flu isn't contagious and doesn't take up around these parts. We're always having parades for this and that, we should have one just to honor the men that fight for our freedom everyday here at home. Yay police.

Hey leona, maybe you do need to take a day off and take a walk in the park. You sound really over stressed. The human mind can only take so much and then the whole body starts to shut down. Sounds like you are almost there. Do what I did long ago, just say NO to so much volunteering. I cut back to what I really believe in and want to do. Of course it helps all my kids are grown and running my own business I can set my own hours.

hi freedom42, should probably say no more than i do, but i just really want to see so much get done. i am dying to get these old, run down buildings cleaned up and help bring in more business and tourism for natchez. i'm just trying to make it a better place. my children are not grown, but are old enough to stay by themselves, the only problem is now, they are terrified. they won't go up to their bedrooms or down to the kitchen, by themselves anymore. all of those sweet, innocent home town little chores like babysitting & selling magazines to the neighbors or running up to grab some ice cream at the coffee shop are over. i am very skiddish, but they are extremely rattled. i'll ask them to run up to their rooms to get their dirty clothes and their eyes are filled with tears they are so scared. so, i am becoming impatient. time will pass and bad memories will fade. while we are on the subject though, does anyone not find it odd that since they have been keeping an eye on the "very strong suspect", there has not been much activity downtown? i do not think the other incidents are related (maybe duncan park, because he would have time to get home, but not inez street)
oh, and sorry if this is TMI

((leona)) I'm butting in I know.. I apologize but reading your last post, maybe your whole family needs a breather. You can't let scum like that (the buglars) affect your everyday lives like that it's by far healthy... We can't let those low down good for nothing idiots think they can get he best of NTZ!! Hang in there... IT'S going to GET better!! I CAN JUST FEEL IT... Have a great less stressful reast of the week... :)

Shes right Leona, you can't let the bad guys change your lives that much! That's what the devil wants - to terrify everybody and forget where to put our trust. Show your kids you are not afraid to live your normal life, just that taking precautions is the wise thing to do. We do a little more locking up, but with 4 dogs in the house I don't think anyone is going to sneak in on us. Do you have a dog? It would sure take the kids minds off the break-ins to have one to care for. And yes, you are right, the downtown seems quieter since they have a suspect under watch. But until they can prove he is the one doing the robberies, they can't arrest him or the PD would have the ACLU on them like you know what. Remember you can't change the world by yourself, you can only help, so pick and choose what is most important. Good Luck!

[[OMEGA]] you are correct. It should change and it only takes one to start the ball rolling.
