BCS Championship Trophy to be on display in Ferriday

Published Friday, February 8, 2008

FERRIDAY — LSU fans will get a chance to see the biggest prize in college football this afternoon.

Tigers radio play-by-play announcer Jim Hawthorne is touring the state with the 2007 BCS National Championship Trophy and will be at Lakeside Ford in Ferriday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Hawthorne has called radio sports action for more than 45 years and has been the “voice of the LSU Tigers” for the past 27, announcing football, men’s basketball and baseball.

The Tigers defeated the No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes 38-24 on Jan. 7 to finish the season 12-2 and capture their second national championship in the past five years.

The Vidalia and Ferriday chambers of commerce will host an “After Hours” on the location from 5 to 7 p.m., which will be catered.

The BCS National Championship Trophy is a Waterford crystal football valued at $30,000.

Why is it coming to Ferriday out of all places? I could see it like if Southern or Grambling won it or something

I would say, because the Ferriday local radio station 107.1 FM is one of the radio affiliates in Louisiana that broadcast all the LSU sports and Lakeside Ford has been one of several local sponsors!
