Ferriday undecided on Wal-Mart money
Published Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Ferriday — How the town of Ferriday will spend Wal-Mart’s $300,000 check is still up in the air, but was discussed Tuesday night at the town meeting.
Mayor Gene Allen said the money will not complete the renovation of the Florida Street gym and that the town should focus on other forms of recreation.
He suggested that the money be used to get matching funds to build a swimming pool.
“We’ve got to make sure we’ve got something for our children to do this summer to keep them off the street,” he said. “Organized recreation is the best thing we can do for our children.”
Alderman Johnnie Brown was the first to bring up an idea that all the aldermen and the mayor agreed on.
He offered that a committee should be formed of board members and citizens to make recommendations on what should be done in the city.
The key to his suggestion was citizen input and Allen said the board should ask citizens to send in comments on what they think should be done.
“We need to let the citizens make some decisions in this city,” he said.
What he wanted to stress the most, was not to be hasty in their decision and end up spending the money quickly and frugally.
“We got it, we’ve managed it, we’re not going to waste it and throw it away,” Allen said.
In other city business, a letter has been sent to the town of Ferriday by the Concordia Parish School Board denying the town their request to have the old seventh grade school property donated to them.
This letter stated that for the time being the land would not be donated to the city.
The land would be used to create a multi-complex center for the police and fire departments, Allen said.
No reason was given for why the school board has chosen to deny the city’s request, Allen said.

Hopefully Mr.Allen won"t have a say so,in the spending of the money! Because,in my heart, with Gods help,he won"t be in there much longer!!!! And we all know what Glen can do for Ferriday,he done it before, and we all know he has Ferridays best interest! Gene says Ferriday was in a bad fix, when he got in there, well we know who"s lying now! We"re all rooting for you Glen in the run-off!!!! Ferriday needs you back!

I think they should put a freeze on the money until Glen takes office.

Ah heck let them buy new corvetts for the police department.
Looks like they would spend resources looking for some merchants to fill the empty WalMart building.

I hope there are numerous people watching this money! He is liable to do something with it that it was not intended to be used for: rennovations to his "lake house" or even in his campaign!!! I agree, there should be a freeze on this money until after the run-off. GO GLEN!!!

Bulldoze the town, then start over from scratch, removing the filthy look the town has and removing the many buildings that look vacant, but aren't. I was shocked to know that so many of the buildings that looked abandoned, were actually business operations!!

I still can't believe Walmart gave them that money. Thats just nuts, what if Wal-Mart would of never located there?

Even though it's a good idea to put the money into something useful like a pool, I don't think the town should let it be spent until Glen gets into office. Kudos to the school board for not "giving" Allen the 7th grade building. Hopefully he's figured out by now that he can't bully people around to get what he wants....it's still campaign time for him.

that much money would buy a nice supply of speeding ticket books for the FPD.

Or a "good set" of roll-out spikes for those speeding 2 miles over the speeding limit. Hell, they need a full-time bookkeeper to handle all those tickets! It would also build a really nice pier and boathouse for G.Allen's lake home. He could also take notes from Phillip West...create a wad of jobs for the cronies out of thin air!

Glen can use it for some hair plugs. The remainder can go to a new dance hall where "Easy Eddie and the Party Rockers" can play anytime!

{He suggested that the money be used to get matching funds to build a swimming pool.}
How much does a swimming pool cost?

What about baseball/softball fields or perhaps a bowling alley, somewhere for kids to be kids?

Use it to build a by-pass around the town.

After the runoff, would be the most conservative action, when all the members are set for the new year. I hope that all the disgruntle citizens of Ferriday come together for the better of the people.

How could you all forget so quickly? It's only been a little over 4 years. How could you forget? Glen did not do anything for Ferriday then. What really makes you think he is going to do anything now? Do you not remember when he tried to steal grant money and give it to Vidalia because he knew all the time he was going to be working for Vidalia? How could you all forget so quickly? If you don't know the stories “ask your buddy Glen about the grant money." I repeat "Glen did not do a thing for Ferriday, but put the town in debt and didn't do a thing for the town, not one thing. Go back down memory lane, better yet, read the archives of the Concordia Sentinel and the Natchez Democrat. The truth is what you need. Before you speak too harsh of Ferriday always remember that human beings live there. So what is Glen going to do this time for Ferriday, make up for his first mistake. Well, I guess everyone deserves a second chance. I hope he is sincere this time around. If not, then it looks as though Ferriday is going to be in trouble again with one Pharaoh after another. Ferriday, pray for a real change and it's not in Glen or Gene. God bless.

Better Glen than Gene!!!!!! Glen does"nt go around flashing diamond rings and necklaces, and bracklets, and living on a lake home, well thats where he"s suspose to live!! He also resides in Natchez also! Gene does"nt know where his home really is!!!!!! He better learn soon because Glen is going to bump his butt out one way or the other,so which way do you want to be bumped Gene?lake?Natchez?your so-called living behind the funeral home? Thats a big laugh!!!!!!!!!!

OK, then we will just give Gene the money so he can bail his loved ones out of jail (after getting arrested from the "testy" Ferriday police).
