Lady Trojans roll past Mamou in playoff opener
Published Friday, February 15, 2008
FERRIDAY — The Ferriday Lady Trojans have had a wonderful season, and they weren’t about to let it end in an upset loss in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
The No. 7 seed Lady Trojans put to rest any upsets No. 26 seed Mamou might have had with a 18-3 spurt in the second quarter on their way to coasting to a 67-33 win over the Green Demons.
“I thought we were a little nervous to start the game,” Ferriday coach Lisa Abron said. “All the hype going into the playoffs and the importance of winning lays heavy on the mind. But once we settled down and got into a rhythm, we played well.”
That rhythm began at the start of the second quarter. Leading 18-12 after the first eight minutes, the Lady Trojans started the second quarter on a 12-1 run and outscored Mamou 18-3 in the entire quarter to take a 36-15 halftime lead.
Mamou hung with Ferriday in the third quarter, but the Lady Trojans outscored the Green Demons 16-5 in the fourth quarter to take the final score above a 30-point difference.
Ferriday dominated the game from a defensive perspective, using their size inside to disrupt Mamou’s inside play and force them to mostly take jump shots or 3-pointers.
“Our pressure defense worked well tonight,” Abron said. “They had trouble handling the pressure. Our size played a big part in the game as well. I noticed when they (Mamou) first came in, they were looking at our size. I think we intimidated them in that regard.”
Even though Ferriday took a 34-point win, Abron saw some things the Lady Trojans need to work on in order to advance farther in the tournament.
“We were sloppy some on offense and missed too many free throws,” she said. “The free throw shooting was horrible. In a close game you need those. We’ll be working on those tomorrow and the next day in practice.”
The Lady Trojans advance to the round of 16 where they will face either St. Thomas Aquinas or Jeanerette.
Chante Poole led Ferriday (29-5) with 20 points while Jasmine Upchurch scored 16 and Jasmine Butler and Jalessia Davis both tallied 10.
Mamou (17-15) was led by Sadie Fontenot with 12 points.

Mamou proved to be a very fast undersized team. I give the Mamou coach credit for playing all 20 of his young ladies,as it can only give them depth & experience for years to come. Go lady Trojans !
