Some residents believe unsolved break-ins to blame for accidental shooting

Published Wednesday, January 2, 2008

NATCHEZ —Some Natchez residents believe the accidental shooting death of Deborah Mizell on Tuesday is a symptom of the stress generated by a rash of unsolved home and auto break-ins.

Mizell’s husband shot and killed her believing she was a home intruder.

There have been four break-ins downtown and one in the Jeff Davis area.

Ann Tillman’s car was broken into in December.

“It makes everyone on edge and fearful,” she said.

The recent car burglary wasn’t Tillman’s first exposure to being the victim of a crime. Four years ago her house was also hit.

Tillman said the invasion of her home and subsequent auto break-in left her feeling unprotected and fearful.

Since this rash of break-ins started weeks ago, Police Chief Mike Mullins said catching the perpetrator or perpetrators has become top priority.

The most recent incident occurred on Dec. 27, at the Salters residence on Jeff Davis Boulevard home of Martha Salters.

Salters said an intruder broke into three vehicles parked in her driveway before going inside.

Mullins said the intruder used keys obtained from one of the vehicles to enter the home.

Salters said six adults and three children were asleep while the intruder was in the home.

“That’s an incredibly scary thing,” she said.

Tillman said when the most recent rash of burglaries began, she suspected something tragic like Tuesday’s shooting would happen.

Besides the accidental shooting death of Deborah Mizell, the Salters’ burglary has prompted some residents in the neighborhoods surrounding Jeff Davis to take extra precautions.

Joe Gamberi said he will be installing additional locks on the doors of his home and motion activated floodlights.

“Other than that we are just taking basic precautions,” he said.

Another Jeff Davis resident, Audley Case, said he has noticed that many of his neighbors are now leaving more exterior lights on during the night.

“I have also heard that some people are considering getting dogs,” he said.

Please get dogs people!
Go get one from the animal shelter and that dog will be so grateful....he/she will protect you just like you are are saving theirs by adoping them.
Those animals know they are about to die, I firmly believe that is why they are so loving and protective of their new owners.
Lets empty out the anmal shelter and let a crook try to get in!!!!!!

I heard from someone who said a man near the earlier break-ins had his gun ready and waiting. I pray this will cause him to be very sure of what he sees before he pulls the trigger. I did not think of something like this happening. I pray the Lord will hold the family in His peace-giving hand.

Someone knows who is doing the break-ins. If you are that one, know this. I, for one, hold you responsible for Mrs. Mizell's death. When the scum is captured(and they will be), If you were not instrumental in their capture, I want the Democrat to publish your picture(s), so we can all treat you accordingly.

I agree cxguidry, someone strongly asked that the Mayor and the Cheif of Police do something DRASTIC to save oyr town from this. They said Natchez is a jewel and it would be a shame to lose our town to these drug addict thugs. I HOPE the powers that be in this town do something.
This is out of control.

I am repeating my deepest sympathy for the Brewers and Glen Mizell. I know no words can help, but I hope Glen can deal with this. He is such a nice man.

the robbers yal are not brain surgeons or they wouldn't be doing what they are doing! There are ways of out smarting them and you just have to stop and think for a second. Exterior lights are fine for sure but also lights in the rooms of your house....an interior light on in a house is a universal sign someone is in that room. Since all these break ins I have been sleeping with multiple inside lights on, try it is all I am saying...it is working for me and I live downtown.

There are some inexpensive fixes that might ease some of the fear. An audible alarm can be installed with a panic button in the bedroom. Secure locks on your bedroom door will allow you to wait for the police to arrive. Few people open windows so caulk them shut and they can't be opened. Leaving keys in an auto that have house keys on them, nothing to say about that. A dog even a small one is good and own a weapon but turn on the lights and hope you scare them off instead of trying to be somekind of hero.

VERY VERY Unfortunate circumstance here, but I still believe in my right to bear arms. Trust me, if you take the weapons away from decent citizens trust me, these thugs with there mentality will still take advantage of it. They don't care in the 1st place.

I had to buy some security devices for my home because my home was targeted for break in. I notice some rocks on my roof, and also some of my siding busted on the side of my house where rocks had been thrown to see if I would respond and come out and check to see what was going on. I hear this is becoming a problem. If you come out they know you are home, so they will go away. I hope they do it again and me stay inside, Just let them come inside. The Sheriffs Department already know the faith of the intruders if they do!!!!

Thugs check in but they don't check out!!!!!

Just get a dog. Period. It doesn't have to be a mean one, just loyal.

and become friendly with your neighbors since we are going to have to fend for ourselves obviously!
When I got home at 5pm yesterday my neighbor brought me black-eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread for New Years....great neighbor yes but, also, know we watch out for one another.

Say it again, sayitloud!!! I guess the next time we complain about nosy neighbors, stop a minute and thank the Lord for them...they just may save our life one day!

I can't say I blame the unsolved crimes for the accidental shooting. Its like blaming guns for all the murders in the U.S. This was a totally preventable accident, Never shoot something unless you are sure of your target. I hope all the tough guys on here who keep saying they will shoot anybody that comes in their house will think twice. It might be somebody that is supposed to be in your house. Some people shouldn't have guns.
Like it was aid above, dogs and light are good easy ideas that are cheap. And like sayitloud said - get to know your neighbors! They can watch your house when you are gone.

Just last week a friend was telling me about his cousin who killed his little daughter when she jumped out of the closet to surprise him. She was not supposed to be home yet and they suspected a criminal was in the house. Sad. She told him she forgave him as she died in his arms.

So yes, mike8427, we should be absolutely sure before we pull the trigger. If they kill my three big dogs before they get to me, then they will surely regret it.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 7:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OMG that is the saddest story kpage!! Where did this happen? How sad!

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think around Mangham, LA. (Don't remember how to spell it.) I think he said it was some years back and that his cousin will never get over it, even though his daughter told him she forgave him. He said she just burst out of the closet to surprise him so he shot in fear. MmmmmMmmm. Yes, it is so sad. Sounds like that situation was one that couldn't be helped. The little girl just wasn't thinking.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well thank you for telling us about that sad story, very similar to the one here I guess but common sense takes a back seat apparently when you are scared for your life. Cut the lights on folks!

Posted by beammeupscotty (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ordinary citizens aren't trained to deal with criminals. This is not the same as hunting in the woods. The police need to step in now and offer courses on actions to take if you suspect you are in danger. They used to offer different classes and some were well attended. Otherwise there will be no stopping this from happening again. Get off your doughnut buts and do something police.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

And let the dogs out to sniff around. If you are good to your pets, they will guard you with their lives. If you don't want dogs, make a plan for what you will do "in case" like they teach kids about getting out of fire. I read NurseCindy's post on another story and I liked her suggestions about not having an identifiable pattern in your way of doing things. Cell phone by the bed in case they cut your lines...big barking dogs...a P.O. box instead of a mail box...among a few others. Highly suggest yall read it.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

We have 1 big dog, 3 little ones, and lots of guns. Guess the bad guys don't have a chance. Oh, and I leave lights on in several rooms and the carport. Of course we live so far off the road, somebody would have to know the house was even here in order to rob it.

Posted by edtheone (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 8:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

We all need to be responsible citizens and watch out for each other no matter if we know our neighbor or not. If you see anything questionable or anyone for that matter, at this point the police should be notified. As for the accidental shooting, the grief this family must be experiencing is beyond what I can imagine. This community needs to pull together in supporting one another. No one needs to say what he or she would or would not have done. Do you really know? I know this, you know if you have crack neighbors and things occuring across the road or down the street. Have you reported this? This is your responsibility to your community as a law abiding citizen. Nuture your town towards positive growth. Think about our kids. Report thugs. If you know something you should report it.

Glad to see that Mike Mullins is admitting to the reality of the increase in crimes. He denied it when all of the criminals from New Orleans migrated north to Natchez. My mother was afraid to go grocery shopping after some of the things that happened to friends of hers.

Glen Mizell is one of the best men I have ever known in my life and I am heartbroken at what has happened. Had it not been for the fear of the no-good creeps who are doing these crimes, this would not have happened. I hope they find them soon and throw the book at them.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with ((beammeupscotty)) and the points he made regarding this tragic accident and the right to bear arms. With the increase in crime in Natchez and throughout the nation, you're safer if you do have a gun in your home. However, it is imperative that you receive proper training to handle the gun safely.

Lack of proper training and gun safety procedures is why there is a high percentage of people killed with their own guns.

Never, ever shoot until you have identified your target.

Very sound advice, ijohnson.

Posted by thetinman (Keith Reynolds) on January 2, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

JJohnson, I agree with you whole heartingly!!!!! If you own weapons, I do believe if these thugs think you do, they will be more then likely not to do anything to you.

If memory serves me correctly, after Mississippi passed the gun laws in the 90's for concealed weapons permits, there where a decrease in Automobile armed robberies. Unfortunately tragedies will come no matter who much laws we have. I really hate to hear of this mistaken identity, but the sign of the times are around us, and trust me, for many that live in rural areas, there may not be time to wait for the cops or even or our k-9 best friends to do much. Just throw them a piece of stake or something and see how they will tell on you. I know it is hard for this man to deal with all this, but what would the story read and the blogs be like if the story ran, Local man shoots robber in his home!!!!!? I bet this would send a message to would be thugs, that decent citizens are tired of you controlling our lives!!!!! and we are goign to say if we have to take back our neighborhoods one thug intruder at a time "LAWFULLY" we will not be in fear no more!!!! But times there will be casualties of the war unfortantly

I read the comments from yesterday and someone said she wasn't coming in. "They heard a noise, he got up to see what was going on and didn't realize she had gotten up. So when he saw someone moving around in the kitchen he thought it was an intruder." But that still seems strange to me. He sleeps with his wife every night and he didn't notices she was missing out the bed. I ain't no rocket scientist but something ain't right with that story.

We SHOULDN'T have to have guns to protect us in our own homes! Whatever happened to the good old days when people didn't even have to lock their doors at night? It's scary to think of what it will be like another generation away. I do believe Katrina is mainly to blame.

i think they were in bed heard a noise and he got up to go see what it was. my husband does this and always tells me and my daughter to stay there. while he was up she got up too but he didnt know she got up so he thought she was someone else.

Until the police make an arrest and have a conviction these criminals could be anyone. White, Black, Hispanic live in the neighborhood, a transient, or someone that relocated here from wherever. It would be nice if the Democrat gave more information when arrests were made. Were the purse snatchers local? I have very little confidence in our Mayberry police force.

Posted by Bobaloo (anonymous) on January 2, 2008 at 2:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To those who think all crime in Natchez is related to Katrina, clean off your Natchez glasses, PLEASE. That is totally sticking your head in the sand and saying if Katrina had not happened Natchez would still be the Mayberry some think it is.

IT is the 21st century people. Wake up and smell the crime. It's all over the country, not relegated to cities or New Orleans. That's just plain stupid.

Go take a ride over to the trailer park meth labs and look at the toothless wonders. They did not evacuate to Natberry for Katrina. Most of them and their parents & their parents parents are born and reared in the area. To act like it was never before is just ignorant.

This is not your grandparent's hometown anymore. This is not your grandparent's America anymore. PAY ATTENTION and take care of yourselves.

**this is buttercup26**
YES THE STRING OF BREAK-INS ARE TO BLAME I BELIEVE!! they weren't really made 'PUBLIC' and people only had the info that was spreaded around town... i think if the break in's where made public and maybe gave people of around those parts of town the knowledge that the police KNEW OF THEM and THERE was to be extra patrol around these areas until something or someone was solved or caught... that maybe just maybe THIS HORRIBLE TRAGIC ACCIDENT WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE..

BUT then again... regardless to how much the breakin's where made public or to how much the police may of patroled the area, a person will do whatever it takes to protect their family... the heart ache of this is that some one had to die because of the fear that was put on these people in these neighborhoods... i have learned to live by the saying everything happens for a reason, and THE GOOD LORD has called this wonderful home... only time will heal the hurt.. i hope and pray...

Does anyone remember the school teacher that was murdered on Mansfield (I may be wrong about the street but it was behind Parkway Baptist), not far from the Mizells live. She was murdered by a jealous student. We never know who is capable of these crime. It's usually the last person you think of.

Bobaloo....there is no way in he-- you can possibly tell me this run of recent robberies is not Katrina evacuees related!! Do you not watch the news? Just this morning they told on CNN that for the second year in a row New Orleans is the NUMBER ONE city for crime!! HELLO?? Do you NOT admit we have people from New Orleans living here since Katrina? If that is what you believe I am afraid you are telling the wrong one to clean their glasses...that should be you!
Are you one of the robbers playing on the computer and trying to turn our attention away from you hoodlums?

Not eveyone can have a dog. If you rent, 99% of landlords don't allow pets, or if they do, you have to pay a hefty deposit over and beyond the regular deposit, PER animal.
The police are still short handed. So they can only be in so many places at one time.
We have to protect each other. Families need to sit down and make a plan to handle this type of situation. There are fire drills and other disaster plans, isn't what has happened here a disaster too?
I am angry that we have been taken hostage and live in fear in our own homes.
Talk to your neighbors, you don't have to like each other to watch each other's backs. Check your outside lighting daily before dark. Just a flip of the switch lets you know if it works.

One other thing which just occured to me. Leave your bedroom doors open to hear if anything is going on in the rest of the house. With my doors shut, I wouldn't know who was moving around. I don't know or care if these idiots are from N.O. or outer space. We need to stop the crime before it starts - but I guess it's a little late for that. Now we just need to protect ourselves and each other.

The paper stated that the intruder used keys from a vehicle in the driveway of the Salters home to gain entrance to the house. Even though the intruders had no right to be in that home, they obviously did not hurt anyone in that house according to the paper. Crime is wrong on any level, but we have to remember we do not live in the days of leaving our doors unlocked and keys in our cars even if the are hidden. We have to start protecting ourselves on every level. It is not the police, the paper, or the cheif of police that is at fault. Investigations take time and somtimes information has to be held from the public for reasons. just as someone earlier commented the police are trained to handle this better than civilians. Let them do their jobs, they are not perfect but they are trained and out there trying to make a difference. We can make a difference by locking cars, houses, outdoor sheds, put in alarms that are less than $50 at the hardware center. They are not high tech but they are loud and do the job. Mr. Mizell my heart breaks for him, because he has to live with the pain and guilt. But the sad fact is as husbands and wives we must communicate and in a case such as this , calling her name or flipping on a light could have possibly prevented this devastating situation. We have to talk and make sure we know were our family is before we shoot. The law officers have to speak and make sure they are seeing the right person before they shoot. This will probably make aot of people mad but like I tell my daughter when tings happen and you are the one guilty you can't blame others for your actions. You have a brain and you must use it before you take action.

Peace, you could be right, there may not be any robberies tonight but it's so cold out that some homeless people may break-in to keep warm or try to start fires in empty buildings. I heard on the news that happened in Jackson. Does Natchez have any shelters for the homeless when it gets cold out like tonight?

Jackson has plenty of jobs....So being homeless in Jackson is due to not wanting to work....There is a place they can go if they want but, They have to go to work the next day so most choose not to go there...

Posted by JunkyardDawg (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 1:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I've actually met some Katrina evacuees who are very nice people and not criminals at all. So to accuse all of the Katrina evacuees would be wrong. One could say that some of the crime could possibly be due to some of the Katrina evacuees, but don't just blame them all. I haven't really kept up to date on the arrest reports, but I imagine those would give some good info about past robberies, and if they only got a slight sentence they may be out now doing the same crimes.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 1:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

i would never lump them all together, ever. i know a few of them myself that would'nt harm a housefly. there are some bad ppl here that came from New Orleans too though and we all know it.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 1:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

fire can you imagine that anyone would rather be out in the cold instead of doing a little work? the work would prob mean they were inside and warm but i guess it's too much to ask of some ppl.

peacerulz i never said they were bad or would harm you. I said they do not wanna work...I lived in jackson for years...I know this first hand people would offer them jobs..There response would be no i dont wanna work....There are so many jobs in Jackson might not be great jobs but they do have jobs....

((Bobaloo)) you are the one with your head in the sand. Look how the citizens of New Orleans were stealing duing Katrina. I'm not talking about for food I'm talking about anything that wasn't bolted down.
Go to youtube & then Battle of New Orleans version of Katrina for an expample of how crazy they were acting. Stealing to put food in your families mouth is one thing, but the things they stole were things they could sell. Sure there were decent people & they were the ones that were shot, raped or left to die.
I realize this is not our grandparents times but every generation is worse & it is not going to get any better as long as you can go to any street corner & but drugs.
Anyone that can't see how the crime rate has risen since Katrina is either in denial or got their head so far in the sand it has fogged their memory.
Everyone was in such an uproar about how the taxpayers are supporting children of unwed parents well now we are supporting every homeless crackhead "victim" of Katrina.
((JunkyardDawg)) is right there were many good people but the bad did out weigh the good. Now look at the reputation the "bad" gave the state of Louisiana. People around the world only saw what tv showed & it was the looting and raping innocent children & old women.
So ((Bobaloo)) get your head out of the sand & wake up or you may be the next victim!

Posted by JunkyardDawg (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 11:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm gonna share this with you hoping that the right people will read it and do something about what is going on in Natchez. The other day I spoke with someone in town. Their family member is on drugs really bad. This person knows where the crack houses are and says the police also know, but are being paid to look the other way. I've also heard from someone else that a Natchez policeman told them the same thing. And these locations didn't just begin with the Katrina evacuees. We have to demand more from our Chief of Police and get this stopped, or your kids will be the next ones hanging out at the crack houses.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As far as crime in Natchez and the Katrina evacuees...yeah there are good people here from Katrina but sorry!!! Mostly bad!! You all may not like to hear it but that happens alot with people when it comes to truth....but you gotta hear it.

Posted by dixiemama (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 11:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The reason they don't arrest the suppliers is because they give the police names of the users. I know of someone that was forced to move from Natchez because he makes & sells meth. Now he is in Vidalia doing the same thing. Did they arrest him? No! I know for a fact the Vidalia sheriff knows about him but nothing has been done to stop him. The police DON'T want to arrest the sellers they keep them supplied with names.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 11:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

are we supposed to believe that the cops in this town are taking kickbacks from the dealers?
so true sayitloud.

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 11:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

they'd rather arrest the users instead of the suppliers? maybe if the supply was'nt there the users would have to stop using.

Posted by dixiemama (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 12:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm not saying they are taking kickbacks just names, though I'm sure they do take kickbacks.
The prisons are full of users but not suppliers. The suppliers are the ones that that drive the nice cars & have nice homes. Sure most crack houses are run down & that's why we don't expect our nice neighbors to be making meth in their own homes.

what the dealers give them the names of their "customers"?

My comment to all of you in Natchez YOU need to wake up and smell the roses!!! This happens everywhere! Being a cousin to the Mizells and living in Texas , i for one think you cant blame anyone but the people responsible. ((peacerulz)) Yes I am saying that when the dealers get caught they give names of their buyers. It's their easy way out. They will even give their kin peoples names to keep from being arrested. I know someone that works at the correctional facility & that's exactly how it works.
((Carla)) I'm not sure how to respond to your comment. The last sentence didn't make much sense. I am very sorry about your cousin.

Everybody wants somebody to blame, I don't believe the police are corrupt and are to blame. I do believe they have their hands full with this mess, but I don't believe that its their fault that we have had a flood of criminals come to the Ntz area. And yes alot of them are from New Orelans, but there are many good people that came too.

Lets support our police here and help them out. Thats what communities are supposed to do - work together. Not point fingers and say who did what.

Its ok , sorry ya'lls City is going through this rash of breakins. And i do Pray they will be caught (whoevers responsible ). I was probably wrong by voicing my opinion but its sad when we spend billions of dollars to protect ourselves from other countries when it should be spent defending ourselves from each other .

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Youa are right Carla in one respect, but wrong in the fact that we should have to defend ourselves from each other. We shouldn't have to defend ourselves from each other at all. We should unite as a country/state/county/city/community/neighborhood. It's sad that we can't and don't. I guess I have crazy dreams and ideas, huh? I think it's a shame that so many people in a country are so different. When it comes to a tragedy like this (given the known support of Deborah's family toward Glenn), there should be NO rude comments against him. But, that hasn't stopped people from continuing to post them. It's sad, really.

I vote we go back to the days of the Old West! Everyone looked out for each other and justice was swift. I vote we reinstate those times and values.

Maybe I havn't looked at every comment but I havn't seen too many rude comments about Mr. Mizell. What happened to him was a terrible accident. The whole city is mourning for this family. It has left the city if fear of what is going to happen next. My Mama lives alone in Montebello & it scares me to think of the horrible things going on.

Well dixiemama help me out. Do you have any proof or are you just going on rumors. If you have this proof that the police are corrupt have you turned in it to anyone? The FBI or DEA would pursue this, but do you think the Fed's are corrupt too? If there is a problem here lets fix it not write about it on the democrat.

Eagles you are right we should work together, thats the way things used to be in the good ole days.

((mike8427)) if it were only that easy. Do you have proof all the corruption is NOT happening? I don't live in Natchez I live in Vidalia. I'm sure it's the same way in Natchez. As for how I feel about the Feds that's really my business alone.
Why don't you go to the police with the info maybe you can make a difference.

Posted by mike8427 (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 2:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

dixie - I don't have any info b/c I believe and support the police. I support the police, the sheriff, the state govt, the fed govt, and the military - I believe in America. We can either fix the problems in this country or we can run and hide. You may call me naive, but I believe that this country can be fixed and can be strong again. If I didn't believe that I would of left along time ago. Whats your beliefs?

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 3:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I believe in them also, mike, however, there are some bad seeds in every area. I do support the law enforcement. They risk their lives for not nearly enough money. I wouldn't dare do what they do for that tiny bit of change. It's a shame, really. I am not naive enough to think that there aren't crooked cops, crooked politicians and crooked people in general. If we could get rid of the crooks, I believe our counrty would be and could be a much greater place.

Posted by mike8427 (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 3:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You said it much better Eagle. Of course we have our bad apples, what I was trying to say is I don't want the bad apples to ruin the bunch. Lets toss the bad apples, and move in the right direction. It seems like there are so many people that see the bad apples point them out, complain about them, but won't do a thing to get rid of it. Thats the point I was trying to say to dixie.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 3:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You are right in that and I agree 100%! Toss out those bad apples!

Posted by dixiemama (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 3:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

How do you know which apples are bad? Police have the authority that we don't have. ((mike8427)) I understand what you are saying & I agree, but there's not much we can do. It's like our hands are tied. Sure we can complain but will it be one of the bad apples we complain to? In other words who can we really trust?

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 3:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You are also right, dixie. We don't know who we can trust, but we can keep our eyes and ears open and report things that need to be reported. If nothing is done, report it to a different person or agency. Sooner or later, someone will listen. People are too afraid to step up and rat on someone. As long as nobody does, we will conitnue to have these problems. Just imagine how horrified you'd be if someone close to you was murdered and you knew people saw something, but didn't go to the authorities with the information. If that was the case (and I hope it never is), people would want othersto talk.

I assume you meant Barack Obamas.

Barack Obama is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

If you don't want to hurt the US...don't vote for Hillary. That would be a big mistake.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 5:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am definitley talking about Obama.
Don't believe the muslim connection.....check him on google, PLUS won't put his hand over his heart during ceremonies such as the one on Labor Day...LOOK IT UP

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 5:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i did google him.

He describes his Kenyan father as "raised a Muslim," but a "confirmed atheist" by the time his parents met, and his Indonesian stepfather as "a man who saw religion as not particularly useful."

He describes his mother, raised by non-religious parents, as detached from religion, yet "in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I have ever known".

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Keith Ellison is the only muslim that has been elected to Congress. He is a representative from Minnesota.

Obama is not.

For the record, i don't plan on voting for him...but don't base your vote on inaccurate information.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well now did you also google Labor Day 2007 where it SHOWED he refused to place his hand over his heart? THAT is not someone I want as President of the USA!

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Then don't vote for him.

I hope this isn't the only reason you won't vote for someone.

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is what i found.

"I don’t mind them arguing with me about policy, but don’t let them question my patriotism," said Obama, responding to a question about the email following a speech before the United Auto Workers in Dubuque, Iowa. “And listen, I am not going to be swift boated at this race. If somebody comes at me I am going to come right back at them hard."

The e-mail purports to show Obama not placing his hand over his heart during a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at a campaign event.

"We were not saying the Pledge of Allegiance,” Obama said. “We were singing the Star Spangled Banner."

You are not required to put your hand over your heart for the national anthem...as long as you stand.

I think it is worse when people don't take off their hats during the national anthem.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

liked him at first....not so much anymore. Don't trust him.
Have you ever heard the term "damage control"? I actually saw this as it happened on that day and that is untrue, everyone had their hands over their hearts sir, everyone except the muslim man.

HE IS NOT MUSLIM...but then again...so what if he is. This is America. Muslims have as much right to be here and practice their religion as christians do.

He meets the criteria established in the Constitution for being president.

I can't believe i am defending a democrat, but if it's him or Hillary...

I will take him all day long. Hillary is the biggest liar.

But then again, i am going to vote for neither.

before you go on about not voting...i will vote...just not democrat.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

OH NO!!! I am NOT saying not to vote!!! Just not for a freakin muslim that's all!! And I'm with you when it comes to Hillary....I'm liking either Edwards or Huckabee myself.

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

but he isn't muslim...AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

are you sure the other church is not just a front?

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 6:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

to be honest...does it really matter?

Like i said before he meets all the criteria to be president.

But it is up to the voters...if they want to vote him into office then so be it.

I don't think he is...i have looked at a bunch or websites...not just obama-run sites and none show any muslim connection.

you won't find anything on any website that's says he's affiliated with anything Muslim for sure. not if he can help it.

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 3, 2008 at 7:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

that may be so...but i stick with my previous comment about meeting criteria for president. It doesn't say one has to be of a particular religion.

So did you have a good New Years, peace?

all religions are cults...to a certain extent.

That's how christianity started...as a rogue sect of Judaism.

take the Natchez glasses off, the world is here and it's here now.

Some parts of it wanna steal from you and me.

Pay attention.)))
___________________________________________________________
i have been readin these comments on and off (haha to many!!)

this guy is right on this one comment! we do need to WAKE UP! THIS IS A NEW DAY AND A NEW AGE!!! the glasses need to be taken off... if not then we will continue to go on BLINDED AND BELIEVING THAT NTZ. will NEVER GET ANY BETTER AS LONG AS THE 'katirina people' are still here...

YES it would be sooooo nice to go back to the days where one could leave their doors unlocked, can walk around your house at any time day or night without the fear of hearing a strange noise. talking about this isw making me think of that movie "MAN IN THE MOON" with REESE WITHERSPOON how they would just set up cots in the summer time on the porch and just sleep out side! (lol) THAT WOULD BE SOOO AWESOME!

BUT REALITY IS THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!! and IT WILL BE A LOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG TIME BEFORE something like that prefect lil town would ever happen! the world, the towns (EVEN LIL OLE RETIREMENT TOWNS AS NATCHEZ) AND the PEOPLE are just on the fast track!! it has been for as long as i can remember! it's sad BUT IT'S THE TRUTH!

I guess sayitloud won't be moving to IOWA...might even hope that IOWA seceeds from the union.

AAAHHH the good old days in Natchez what a good life.

I still stand firm in my belief that Katrina is largly to blame for our crime rate rise.

Posted by buttercup26 (anonymous) on January 4, 2008 at 12:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

((dixie)) i too believe the result of katrina has a LARGE deal with what's now going on in Natchez... I also believe that the result of katrina only sped up the timing on when NTZ. itself was going to start gettin 'faster on that track' it was bound to happen sooner or later... most of these criminals that are being 'slapped on the wrist' and sent home are from HERE (NATCHEZ) born and raised!!

EX. the guy that shot and killed his friend and only did 3 YEARS! I FOUND OUT WED. NIGHT FROM HIS OWN COUSIN THAT HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR COCAINE ON ONE OF HIS ROUTINE DRUG TEST!!! and i was like OH WELL THEN THAT PUNK IS GONE FINALLY! (HE VIOLATED HIS PROBATION) BUT NO!!!! HE IS BEING PUT ON 'HOMCIDE WATCH' WHILE BEING TREATED IN A DRUG FACILITY!! THEN IS GOING TO BE RELEASED INTO SOCIETY ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after he does his drug rehab of course! MY BUTT BURNT TO THE TOAST WHEN SHE TOLD ME THIS!! HIS OWN COUSIN AGREED WITH EVERYTHING I SAID ABOUT HIM WED. NIGHT AFTER FINDING OUT HE VIOLATED HIS PAROLE, BEING SENT TO A 'REHAB' AND WILL BE BACK WALKING AROUND IN WHAT? 30 DAYS???? GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

Some interesting info about Obama. Is this what we want for a President?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Frightening!!!!
Why is this guy even in the running ??!! We need to pray for our nation.
Obama mentioned his church during his appearance with Oprah. It's the Trinity Church of Christ. I found this interesting.
Obama's church:
Please read and go to this church's web site and read what is written there. It is very alarming.Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S. If you look at the first page of their web site, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. No where is AMERICA even mentioned.
Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to join Obama's church... B-L-A-C-K!!!
Doesn't look like his choice of religion has improved much over his (former?) Muslim upbringing.
Strip away his nice looks, the big smile and smooth talk and what do you get? Certainly a racist, as plainly defined by the stated position of his church! This guy desires to rule over America while his loyalty is
totally vested in a Black Africa!
I cannot believe this has not been all over the TV and newspapers. The thought Obama has even the slightest chance in the run for the presidency, is really scary.
Click on the link below or type in the link below in GOTO space above. There you will find the web page for the church Barack Obama belongs to:
www.tucc.org/about.htm
Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 10:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)
((dixiemama)) it's not all over the TV and newspapers because It's NOT TRUE!!! Can you prove he had a Muslim upbringing? Where is that documented as being a fact?
Stop and think . . . if Obama is the racist you claim he is, why are sooooo many Whites voting for him??? Why????
Stop trying to perpetuate this witch hunt!!! If you really want to know the truth about it, he may be the MOST qualified to represent America. He is the only candidate who has a real vested interest in both races, Black and White. Or, did you forget that his mother was White?
But, you call him a racist!! I call it shameful that people will create something out of nothing and act like raving lunatics about something they know is untrue because they can't stand the thought of a "Black" man being President of the US!! Plain and simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To claim that Obama is a racist and a Muslim is preposterous and mean-spirited. What did your research uncover about Huckabee, Ron Paul and Romney???
((ijohnson )) you sound very vicious & upset. I hope you don't have heart trouble or high blood pressure getting this upset. Calm down & do some homework you may learn some things.
I got my info from a reliable source, it was not my words though they do sound good.
Everyone on the comment board tries to conceal their true idendity but your religion & true color came out very clear. Don't worry we all slip sometimes.
((mike8427))-- January 3, 2008 at 2:01 p.m.--I will let you know that the some cops in Vidalia are crooked, because back in 2001 my ex husband got a ticket for speeding and had drugs on him and the cop told him if he would meet him at the grain elevators and bring him some crack he would drop the ticket. Well my x-husband did and they smoked it together and he was on duty and in uniform! So you tell me about our system. He also gave him some names including his own brother. You know what happen to the cop when I told the Sheriffs office about this they LAUGHED!!!!!!!!!! So I guess DIXIEMAMA knows what she is talking about, so you do your research.
Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 11, 2008 at 10:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)
((dixiemama)) "vicious & upset" is exactly how I would label your comment posted at 11:05am. You're launching a "vicious" attack against a man you evidently know nothing about. If you had done your research properly, you would not have posted it. Read his book, research comments made by people who know him best, i.e., his sister, grandmother, college roommates, co-workers and those who work beside him every day.
Making statements based on "reliable sources" is always suspect. We all know that you must take it with a grain of salt and consider it with the same credence you give the stories and "news flashes" we read in the tabloids and the trashy gossip magazines . . . consider the info based on "unnamed reliable sources" to be SUSPECT.
In addition, if ANYTHING you've referenced were true, Hillary or any of the opposing candidates would have made it a major issue in this campaign. If it were true.
For the record, I am an Independent. I'm leaning toward Obama but I'm open to what the other candidates have to say. I just see so many character attacks being launched with no credible evidence to back it up, that's all.
Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 12, 2008 at 8:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)
((notfromnatchez)) THANK YOU for shooting down all these false statements trying to discredit Obama. However, I see no one has attacked you and called your statements "vicious and angry". GO FIGURE!?!?!!?!?!
I guess they just slipped up in trying to conceal their true identity and color, and their prejudice based on religion and a few other things. (sarcasm intended)
If I were them, I would be more concerned about the rest of those guys running. Someone made a statement about Bin Laden saying "we will be destroyed from the inside." How true, that's exactly what BUSH has done . . . destroyed the US from the inside.
Calm down people!!! Vote for whomever you want to be President and stop launching all these character assassinations based on false information. It makes you look desperate.
