Newellton man arrested on sexual battery charge
Published Thursday, January 10, 2008
VIDALIA — A Newellton man was arrested after allegedly engaging in a sexual act with a young teen on a school bus.
Brandon J. Bass, 20, 321 Newlight Road, Newellton, was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated oral sexual battery with a child.
Bass allegedly engaged in a sexual encounter with a 13-year-old female on a Tensas Parish school bus as it traveled through Concordia Parish Dec. 15, according to Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Lee Ford.
Several students on the bus reportedly witnessed the incident and notified their parents, who in turn notified authorities, CPSO Public Information Officer Kathleen Stevens said.
Bass is being detained on a $40,000 bond.

I sure wish they would write these articles with more facts to clarify some questions. If the 20-year old wasn't the bus driver, which I assume he was not, why was he on this bus? Was he a monitor, hitchhiker, Tensas Parish School District employee . . . ??? What business did he have on the bus??
I would imagine that should have been one of the first questions the police asked him and it should have been readily available to the media. If not, I bet the kids on the bus who reported it to their parents know.
We appreciate the articles but we need a little more basic information to avoid a lot of speculation. Especially when it's information that does not compromise the criminal case.
In addition, it's information that will relieve a lot of concern for parents who have to put their children on school buses today. Did this guy have a legitimate right to be on this?? If so, parents cannot feel that their children are safe if they are exposed to predators and child molesters within the confines of a school bus??
Natchez Democrat, please seek some more facts about this guy and whether he has an existing criminal record of any type.

Well, no details yet, BUT, at least they arent sitting on the info. They are sharing what they know as fast as they get it!
Lots of questions for this pervert.

a man loaded ALL 4 OF HIS BABIES ages from 4 months - 3 yrs. in his car went threw them over a bridge then drove to the mother's work and told her that's what he did b/c the mother would not give him the money he wanted to buy his drugs!
please keep this family in your prays.. the mother don't even have a picture of the 4 month old... heartbreaking... just heart breaking

That is sad. I have a three year old myself and just cant understand how someone can do these things. This 20 year old if he is still in high school should have been kicked out!!

Our children need some kind of protection. The bus drivers offer none at all.
((buttercup26)) I saw on the news about the man throwing the babies off the bridge. That's a fine example what drugs make people do.
This is beginning to be old news. Every few days we hear of something horrible happening to children. What about the man last week that poured cooking oil on his girfriends baby then turning the hair dryer on him until his skin literealy fell off. Thankfully the baby is going to live but think of the hell is is going through.
Another new trend is all these pregnant women coming up dead or missing. If a man doesn't want a baby then just leave. Better yet don't get yourself in the position of getting a woman pregnant. Not that I'm saying it's all the man's fault.

Hello everyone, although this is sad to hear and really rediculous, from what I'm getting by reading this the girl let him do it. If she did, they both were wrong, and she should punished. Maybe if the system would make some of these girls do community work for their actions, it will break down this widespread of promiscuity going on around here. I'm not talking about girls who were raped or molested without their consent, I'm talking about the ones who let the guys do this to them. You all may not agree with me, but it's the truth. My opinion is only from what I've gotten from what the article has to say so far. There were witnesses, so it sounds to me as if they both were in on it. Because why didn't the other children tell the bus driver? Until I read of more details, this is how I feel about it.

Drawpaintsing, the girl is 13 yrs. old. What punishment would you like for her? She has probably been abused before, and that is why she accepted what he was doing. When someone, esp. a child, is hurt enough times, it becomes a way of life. Kind of like a beaten dog who won't bite his owner, but comes crawling to him with tail wagging hoping for better this time. I am only glad the guy is over 18 and can be charged as an adult. BTW Obama voted against stiffer punishment for crimes like this in Illinois. Check out his voting record - it's public.

Ok, if he was the driver, and the article said that it happened as the bus was traveling, then who does it sound like was performing the act? I still think both should be punished. But once again I say that this how I feel right now until there are further details.

I may be wrong but I thought she had left the baby with the boyfriend. Whatever the reason it should never have happened. Now the little boy, if he lives will have a life time of horrible scares to bear because of his Mama & her boyfreind. It's just not fair. I feel like your punishment should be the same as you did to the victim. The police said the man showed no emotions at all so he is capable of anything.
The boy in Ferriday (Connor Woods) that killed his parents and friend has never shown remorse for what he did. There are some cold sick people in the world & we have to learn to protect our children from the & ourselves.

((csguidry)) your comment regarding the possibility of this guy failing in school in order to be around the young girls just reminded me of a similar case. This case hit the national news a couple of years ago, I think. It involved a 26-year old man who enrolled in ELEMENTARY or MIDDLE SCHOOL so he could be around young vunerable children. He made it a point to be clean-shavened and wore a ball cap pulled down over his eyes when he registered at this school (I believe he committed the same crime at another school, too). He was a child molester -- I think he was also a registered sexual offender. In addition, he was living with two other OLDER perverts in a home they shared where they engaged in group sex. A real sick bunch of sleaze balls. These old men would come up to the school, when necessary, and pretend to be his uncle and grandfather. However, they were not related -- only had very sick perverted thoughts that were related.
This guy fooled the administrators and other school officials when he registered. I can't remember all of the details but I think another school employee uncovered the farce when she came across another application or some paperwork that sent up red flags.
This guy's sole intention was to win the trust of an innocent child so he could molest them and bring them back to the home he shared with those old men to partake in molesting this child further.
There are some very evil and sick people who live among us -- keep your kids close to you!!!!

Freedom, you have a good point. But what if she wasn't abused. If she wasn't abused then she should be held responsible for what she did also. Some kind of community service should be fair enough. If she was abuse then the truth shall come out and more people will and shall be punished as well. This just may go deeper than intended. A lot of people come from abused homes, and a lot don't let that cripple their lives and their decisions (only if that happened to her). If she was abused she know it wasn't right when it happened to her, so she should know it ain't right to do it. I'm not judging her either. Like I said before, this is what I speculate from the article. There a lot of "ifs" and "what ifs" in this situation, but I still think they both were wrong.

This is the question I have (at this time)....What were they doing on a school bus on a Saturday (Dec. 15,2007)?
Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 11:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Good point noneya. I would guess a special field trip, in which case maybe he was suppose to be some kind of chaperone. Whatever, it's just scary for those of who still have children riding the bus.

i thought if your charged with aggravated oral sexual battery with a child. that this means the person was not a willing partner. I could be wrong.
Posted by noneya (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 11:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)
as long as it was with a child it's acrime anyway, but the "aggravated" part meant it was not with his/her consent. please correct me on this if I am wrong.
Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 11:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I think you are both right. She is still a child - he is adult.
I just watched the video of the man who threw the children off the bridge in Alabama. A family member was interviewed, "He was arguing with his wife about his girlfriend. He just wanted to show her he was man of the house and whatever he said was right." Sick people.

freedom: These type of animals (I no longer assess them as human) CANNOT be punished enough on this earth to suit me! The same goes for the perverts described in the other article that was abusing the handicapped (infirmed)
Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 11:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)
All of you are right, but what if this so happens again with another man, then what? Don't take this the wrong way. He should definately be punished. The point I'm trying to make is that there are some girls out there who engage in this act, and when they are caught, then only the guy gets in trouble. I'm not directly talking about her. I'm just giving examples. I think all of these type of situations should be further investigated, and if it was consented, then they both are wrong. This could be a slow halt to all of this promiscuity, which will make a lot of other things better. Who knows what went on. Only them two and the other kids on the bus knows. My speculations are only "ifs".
Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 11:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Abuse does continue in a cycle, and the girl definately needs help and guidance. You are correct, if this type of crime could be stopped it would make life better for everyone.

I think I may have mentioned in an earlier article along the lines of how much the sexual revolution of the 60's has changed peoples minds and attitudes towards sex in general. There is so much focus on such these days that there is no wonder CHILDREN of 12-13 years of age knew more than we did at 19-20...and experienced it to boot!

Everyone asks why a 20 yr old was on a school bus,,,It is because your federal government won't put an age limit on how old they consider HIGH SCHOOL kids. NO child left behind, bunch of B.S. There are 17 yr olds in the 9th grade for gawd sakes. Well they should have left this one behind, what do you guys think???
Posted by roberth33 (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 12:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Well he is definitely goingt o spend a few years in prison.
But did the girl cry for help and no one helped her? that would be horrible. Or was she a willing participant? were they dating? if so that child's parents have some explaining to do to authorities.

it's pretty brave to do something like that in front of other students...no telling what he'd do without witnesses.

WHERE WAS THE DRIVER? When I was in school and rode the bus, the driver was ALWAYS watching us in that huge rearview mirror she had and making sure we were behaving. So many questions, so little info at this time. I presume there will be more at a later time.

If this is the same set of Bass's that I know (there are 2 sets of Bass in Newellton, 1 family is white and 1 family is black)I have worked with one of the Bass families when I worked for a youth program in Tensas Parish. The family I worked with has about 12 family members in it and are very trouble kids. A couple of them are in jail now and a couple of them have been in and out of jail several times. Most of the charges that I know about are drug related. These Bass kids are also "mentally slow" and are dropouts. This does not suprise me about this family. As for Brandon Bass being a student, it is possible, lots of them stayed in school until the age of 19 or 20 then they dropped out.

if you're not out of high school by the time you turn 19 then you should have to leave. 20 yr olds don't belong on a bus with 13 yr olds. that's ridiculous.

I fail to see where this article has anything to do with a handicapped person! This incident happened on a school bus. Stick to the comment at hand or go to the article about the handicapped person, there are still comments. This is about abuse of children. Anyway the problem on the other subject has been resolved. You are old news Buddie. Another think I'm a strong old gal & no one has ever bashed me to death, I always stand my ground!
