Burglar strikes again
Previously blamed suspect confirmed to be at home
Published Sunday, January 27, 2008
NATCHEZ — Just after 4 a.m. on Saturday morning the Natchez Police Department responded to a call of a burglary at an occupied dwelling on Inez Street.
And the culprit is not the suspect police believed was responsible for previous break-ins. Police Chief Mike Mullins said his officers confirmed that the man they interviewed in connection with the crime two weeks ago was at home when Saturday’s burglary occurred.
Police have not named that suspect, or any others.
Mullins said the intruder in the Inez Street burglary gained access to the residence through a window with a faulty latch.
Mullins said the intruder was spotted when an early morning phone call woke the homeowner.
As the homeowner was walking into the kitchen to put the phone on the receiver, he spotted the intruder just as he was walking out of the front door, Mullins said.
As the intruder ran from the house he was briefly pursued by the homeowner, Mullins said.
Mullins said the homeowner described the intruder as a male standing about six feet tall with a medium build.
No items were reported stolen from the house.
The break-in is the eighth in a string of recent home invasion burglaries that started in early December on Orleans and Commerce streets. Houses on Jeff Davis Boulevard, Pearl Street and Wheeler Avenue have also been burglarized.
Entry to the house in each case has been different, including broken windows, unlocked doors or using keys found in an unlocked car in the driveway.

Does this house actually fit the pattern of the previously burglarized homes? I mean no disrespect, but I do not think so. Does the Wheeler address match the others? Same thing with the houses in the Duncan Park area. The first homes broken into all housed higher income persons.
I think you have a copy cat burglar, or possibly two.

I do hope and I am sure that the ACSO is involved with the MHP and possibly some FED help! Anybody with any info should contact your NPD and support them fo the fullest!

This person(s) should have the pleasure of walking into the wrong home. This casual invading of homes while people are there is just too bold! If the police can't stop the person(s), maybe some homeowner will?

Ok so how did he know there was a faulty latch? I mean was this something he already knew or dumb luck or do you really think he ran around to all windows before he got lucky?
HOW do the police know the "other" guy was home during this?
WHY do they think it is not related? Eight different break ins and is this supposedly eight different burglars?
Something rotten in Denmark.

sayitload...sounds like they are trying to cover up for the rich guys kid.I would also like to know just how sure they are that the rich guys kid was at home.I cant see the Natchez PD tailing him 24/7 as short handed as they are.Im beginning to think the chief doesnt have a clue as to whats going on.

The only way I would feel CERTAIN that the "suspect" was at home was IF he had one of the ankle bracelet, house arrest things on.

I was woundering the same thing. How in the world would they know for certain if the suspect "known drug user" was at home on a Sat. night. Its just hard for me to believe a guy that bad off would be at home all of the time. Who knows it may not be him but I wouldnt count him comepletly out.

What if the people in the affected area banned together and contributed to a kitty for a reward greater than what is given by crime stoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the guilty party?
I am not for a reward system, I believe people should do the right thing, not for personal gain or out of fear of consiquences, but because it is the right thing to do. But I realize that the world is not made up of people like that in this day and age.

These precautions help deter burglars; Vehicle as close to the dwelling as possible, a bright outside light for the doors, An inside pet (dog), an inside house light left on that shines through a major front window, a motion/heat security light, an ornament (e.g. frog that croaks) placed near any doors, etc.

Then they can call Lairds to come pick 'em up.

I think the citizens of Natchez should have a meeting to come together for once as a town that just wont tolerate this nonsense. The burglar is having to much fun ,while we stress at night, i find myself getting up every hour checking windows and doors im TIRED

Even though he is not out at the hours that these burgleries have occurred, I have cautioned my teenage son that he and his friends need to stay inside our homes unless they are walking to and from their vehicles. Due to the stressed state of mind that most of the town is in I would hate to see another accidental death occur. Hopefully the person or persons will be caught very soon and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Ok, I think this is not all the same person. I think either someone thinks the police have their eye on one person and therefore they are less likely to get blamed or someone might just be purposely trying to take the heat off of our main suspect and make him look innocent. Wonder which it is? Either way, I think that previous suspect is not innocent. My question would be, if the suspect is so addicted to drugs, why isn't he in some sort of rehab? It's very difficult (if not impossible) to dry out on your own. He should be in rehab (regardless of the crimes). If he were, we would KNOW where he was. Maybe his parents should look at it from that perspective.

I dont think its one person either...I believe its a group that is working together...when one is a suspect the others will continue to do burglaries & throw the PD off.I dont think a reward should be offered either...crimestoppers is broke & we pay enough taxes so I think the people we pay should do their job.

I think its time to call in some pros to solve these crimes

I'm not sure how much of this I believe anymore. How
many have seen the intruder and did nothing to stop
him? Clearly, their homes aren't set up like mine.
Sooner or later they will hit the RIGHT home and be
relieved of their misery. I'm not one to fret over
what may be taken from me during my absence, but when
I'm present, your boldness will be rewarded. The folks living around me refer to my home as a fortress. I've never had trouble of any kind and have
taken every precaution to avoid it. The times in which we live dictates extreme measures, and this is
most unfortunate.

Crimestoppers is a program that works well in other states and it can work with the right help and leadership and commmunity help! It has to have the 100% back of the law enforcement authorities and the governing bodies!

This man may be guilty, but it isn't for you to decide. It is for the courts to decide. He has the same rights you do. He may be a drug addict, but he is still an American and deserves the same respect you would expect to receive.

In today's society and in our "environment", it does seem like and it is happening where the criminal element(s) has more rights than the victim's. In man areas, across the USA, elected District Attorney's now have a department or division, strictly dealing with victim's rights.

I know our law enforcement are working hard on this. I still think they should have some help brought in. These guys must be exhausted. I hope this case breaks soon. Where is Inez St? I wonder if anyone else is curious about the fact that nothing was taken in the last couple of break ins? It just proves my point that it may be a ploy to deter them away from the original suspect. Why would you be so bold as to break in someone's home while they sleep, then not take anything. And if I'm not mistaken, this is the fourth time that the homeowner actually saw and scared off. I know it's dark that hour of the morning, but wouldn't you think someone (or all four) would have a decent description? I'm just very puzzled by all of this. It's starting to feel like the criminals are enjoying this and making it inot a game. Bad thing is, they will eventually break into the wrong (or right) home and be seriously harmed or killed.

I have to agree with all of you. These fools need to be stopped. This is really getting old. I think everyone would appreciate a little rest by now, instead of being on edge. I too wonder if these perps would be bold enough to take on a homeowner. I hope it doesn't come to that, though. It certainly is something to think about. I just don't think this particular one (or maybe even the Duncan Park ones) are the same person as downtown and Jeff Davis. I am so tired of opening the paper and finding a new break in. I'm sure everyone is. If anyone has seen anything at all, even if you don't think it's related, please contact the police. Anything could help at this point. Keep up the good work NPD and Democrat for keeping us informed. I think we all appreciate it.

who would get mad at a person because they didn't kill an intruder?
Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 27, 2008 at 5:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
sayitloud--are you saying that you want this guy tortured? if so what makes you any different than the perp? Our laws are in place for a reason. They aren't there to be pushed aside like a piece of garbage. Yes people do break the law and should be punished, but there are ways to do it that doesn't make one stoop to their level.
I may not live there, but my wife has family that does and I want them safe. So I do have a concern for the bad things that happen there, but there are ways to control it. Shooting at shadows isn't one of them.
You want to know what living in fear is...how about sleeping on the floor because of a drive by that happened on your block? How about being able to hear gun shots all night long in your neighborhood? How about police sirens or ambulance all around your neighborhood? That's living in fear.
And if that's bad, try worrying about an IED while on patrol or a mortar being fired at your camp while you try to get a few hours of rest...if you can.
That's living in fear. So don't sit there and say you are living in fear. You don't know what fear is.

(Eagles) According to the published ND story, Inez Street is the location and I finally got time and found the location east of Cemetery Road in a location near Stiers Lane, College Lane, and Watkins Street, near the old Natchez College location. I hope this area "I. D." ed will tell you the area of Natchez, if I am correct in my assumption!

Thanks, rushing. I wasn't familiar with it. Now, notfromnatchez, I am sorry you have to endure that type of fear where you live, but we choose to live here BECAUSE of the low crime rate. That's part of the reason those of us love it here, so to us - this IS fear. If we wanted to live in a place where we have drive by shootings and gunshots all night, we'd live in Jackson. I know you surely don't mean to come off as rude as you do sometimes, but think about it from our point of view. We are not used to such crimes here and we don't want to sit back and let them happen.

YOU notfromnatchez really should realize this crime spree is new to Natchez living and we do not like it and are certainly not used to it by any means! I'm with eagles....if I wanted to live in total fear I would be living in Los Angeles or the Bronx in New York, this is NOT Natchez.

Sayitloud--I understand that this isn't LA or NYC...then don't act like it is.
With all this talk about being a small town and "this just doesn't happen here", it sounds like people from Natchez don't fear the criminals as much as they fear change. Everything is changing...10-15 years ago everything was different...not just crime rates.
Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 27, 2008 at 7:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Well notfromnatchez, I know this kind of crime is minor in large cities, but it is very real to us and is serious to us. I don't mean to make light of the more serious crime, but I'd rather you didn't make light of ours. I know this probably seems very small and petty to you, but we just aren't used to such things here. It's an uneasy feeling to know that these fools are breaking into occupied homes while people sleep (some with small children). It's starting to move all over town now, so every neighborhood is vulnerable. Like we said earlier, if they are bold enough to enter and occupied dwelling, they may be bold enough to really harm someone if confronted. We just don't know at this point. We would all sleep a little easier when the people responsible are caught. I respect your opinion and I respect your thoughts on "innocent until proven guilty", but we do not even have a name for a suspect yet. We aren't trying anyone at this point. It certainly doesn't hurt to be aware of these crimes and somewhat prepared.

Again, notfrom, I mean no disrespect towards you, but I think I speak for many when I say that it is not change we are afraid of. You are wrong there. We do not like this crime that has bombarded us recently and we do not intend to put up with it. That's all I'm saying. We have every right to be afraid or nervous and we'd rather you (or anyone else) not make light of it. I am not trying to be rude to you, but please don't make light of this situation or make fuun of us. Have a little respect.

Could it be that the Chief along with NPD is covering up something? If this guy was black, don't you think him/her would have been exposed by now? All of these breakins and people walking up to the burgular. No one can identify. I may be crazy but just think for a minute. I hate a thief no matter what color he is. The only true way to find out is if you shoot them on the spot. I'm not scarred in my home. A lil food for thought.

NotfromNatchez, many of us do have that right here in good old Natchez.

Thanks, sayitloud. Sideline, I'm not sure if anyone is covering up anything or just making sure they have concrete evidence so the people won't walk on this one. I don't like thieves either and I am not afraid in my home. I have protection and would use it (if the need was there). I also don't understand why several homeowners have seen this guy and can't seem to identify him (or them). It may be that the descriptions are so different (because I think there are more than one) that the police are trying to piece everything together. That's what I am choosing to believe. I don't know if these suspects are black or white. Nobody has said that either way. And I could care less what color they are, just as long as they are caught and punished for their crimes.
Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on January 27, 2008 at 8:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
that's true....I'm thinking it happens in the middle of the night and happens so quickly in the middle of the night that no one sees anything or anyone! I doubt the burglar even sees them!

Maybe not, sayitloud. I'm sure one would be so stunned to find someone in their home that they may not be able to get a good look. It just wouldn't surprise me if the next victim makes sure the criminal doesn't leave on their own two feet! I hope we don't have anymore tragedies in this town, but people are on guard and on edge.

Have you some protection ready and a phone by your bed if you hear something foul outside call the law. Stay on the phone with dispatch until the police arrive. Don't get off of the phone. POLICE IF YOU ARE DRIVING AROUND IN YOUR COP CARS AT 1 AM AND YOU SEE SOMEONE WALKING DOWN THE STREET IN A NEIGHBORHOOD OR EVEN DOWNTOWN FOR THAT MATTER CALL EM OUT!! Have all the faith you want in NPD & ACSO, they are shorthanded and not able to patrol so much. You cannot depend on dispatch either, a couple of years ago I called the ACSO because there were 2 trucks pulled over across from my house at 4am the men were out of their vehicles. I informed them my door lock was broken and I was home alone and dispatch took the report and HUNG UP ON ME! I then found out it was 2 NPD officers fighting over a woman. Protect & Serve my behind, they SCARED the daylights out of me. We have every right to live in fear with the Keystone Kops for protection.

Guy’s and Gal’s, this is not really all that new to Natchez.
Sometimes it goes unreported.
I remember when my family first moved to Natchez in the late 60’s.
My Dad was awakened one night by an intruder. He did not report it.
He gave chase, barefoot in snow. Didn't catch him. I'm sure the thug was better dressed.
I believe my Dad secured his home as best he could afterwards.
There will always be criminals. Some would rather take from others, rather than EARN an honest living.
It’s been that way forever, just not as prevalent.
I agree we must resolve this, but let’s be safe. Talk to family and friends about security measures.
Most of all be secure, as you see fit.
The 2nd Amendment rules. If that’s not for you, keep your cell handy.

This suspect is partners with the previous 'suspect'. Theyve been seen together just last week. This new suspect was in the previous suspects truck. I would like to know if the previous suspects parents are waking up every 30 mins to make sure their son is home and asleep?? Doubt it! This is so ridiculous! So many people know exactly what is going on and I know many people that arent going to let this slide by.

The group of burgulars are attempting to create fear in Natchez...they are doing a good job of this. You are afraid, very afraid...you are cleaning and loading your guns in await, and some of you hope that one of the burgulars will pick your home for their next break-in.
Isn't this sort of a pre-meditated type of murder...when one sits around planning to kill? So, which sin is worse...stealing or killing?
Perhaps, the godly thing to do would be to place your most prized posessions out on your lawns, and then the thief could just pick them up, and be on his way, without breaking into your home...just a thought. Store your treasures in Heaven, so that thieves won't break in and take them from you.
(“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:19-24)).

I agree, yousay. I think there are many people that know who is responsible and they should speak up. You are also right on the parents being the first to start screaming if their child is accidentally shot. Does anyone else find it odd that we talk about this man as though he is 17, instead of 37? He shouldn't be under his parent's watchful eye at his age anyway. Grow up, dry out and get a job. Be a man and oen up to what you have done.

hellcat Did you report to the sheriff or chief about your incident i will go so far as telling you this did not happen these guys have enough problems without people like you stating false claims we should all no better than this our law officers do protect and serve us and we need to give them credit when was the last time you went to jury duty or turned in a pusher or burglar all you have to do is make up stories to make things look bad reminds me of the ND

Not all things have changed sayitloud... what hasnt changed around here is how we stereotype these criminals. We all know what's going on here, do I have to spell it out? What needs to really change is the way these criminals are pursued. Instead of the police lurking around downtown looking for people with open containers, they need to be in the dangerous neighborhoods searching for suspicious characters!

Cheers to notfromnatchez for his inspiring stereotypical comments concerning "our people". It seems that notfromnatchez only seems to belittle the Natchez society. I am sure everyone here in Natchez wants to read all of your morals to the story.

Apparently, the Natchez Police didn't have enough evidence to arrest the young man they took in for questioning. Or did he turn himself in after hearing that he was a suspect? Until he is convicted, he is innocent. Please allow the police do their job.
If you think you can do a better job, go put in an application with the police force, I heard they were hiring.

I think we should all get off the NPD's backs. It's not an easy job and one that I wouldn't want.

Too many liberals in this town, vote more conservative and let's clean up around here
no discipline in the schools
no jail time for criminals, too easy on them just letting them stay out on the street hoping they'll pay a fine in 30-90 days
no fire and brimestone and damnation for evil living in the churches
so many fat and lazy people around here everyone looking for someone else to either give them a handout or solve their problems
Do Martial Arts, get tough, and take responsibility for your own safety, health, and prosperity. Vote Republican and denounce the evil liberal Democratic ways.
Natchez! WAKE UP! Take Action! Show some spirit and catch these guys. You can't wait on the police

Aww BOO HOO for the poor Natchez Police. That's what wrong with this city, too much boo hooing and not enough muscle. Let's get off our a#* es and DO SOMETHING instead of sit in front of a computer and complain about it. No, I will not go and work for the force, but yes I will support them, but not until they can turn their attention to the real culprits here in Natchez, Mississippi!

In a town of 25,000 people, one would not think it would be THAT difficult to catch a theif.

This particular string of crimes is not the only ones going on in this town. They can't put every single officer on this case alone. I am just as frustrated as the next person about these suspects still on the loose, but get real.

By the way, last I checked, we did not have a population of 25,000. I can't tell you exactly what the correct number is, but I think that's a pretty high number.

It would be incredible if everyone in this town could come together. But this is impossible, societies here are completely segragated from each other. Hate is in the air. And the smiles are sometimes rare. And I will get real and say it is not entirely the N.P.D.'s fault, it's not anyone's fault except for the perpertrators. However, if there were better communication between the people, crime would deteriorate.

In my world, this town is not segregated, I own two businesses, and people of all colors come in and out of my doors, we don't have any problems, if I catch a shoplifter, he/she goes to jail and everyone thinks that's the way it should be
in my martial arts school black people, white people, orientals, and muslim, we all get along and work out to make ourselves better
in my retail business, people of all colors shop and socialize together and we respect one another, if anyone wants to act up and be disrespectful, I throw them out.

Well, its soothing to see these relationships exist here. But don't be so nieve to think that this occurs everywhere in Natchez. I mean, come one, this is the real world where negativity and fear exist. Given the history of Natchez, it is easy to see why. Yes, life is good here and hate is not everywhere, but it does exist.

Krogers, I hope you're not the teacher who has the martial arts school, which used to be located behind the new Shell store and gas station, where the new laundrymat is located.

Everyone in town knows who the suspect is, whom was questioned...word gets around! If someone decides to look him up and put a cap in his---you know where...will the Democrat be held liable for printing the story and causing the town to become inflamed against this person of interest?
Note to all readers...he was not arrested...so, just maybe...he didn't do it!
Dear Suspect, please do yourself a favor and check into rehab; get out of town quick. The lynch mob is coming for you. Ok?

I am sure the suspect will take your advise peace. I am more sure he/she is an avid reader to the Natchez Democrat as well as a large contributor to today's society. Perhaps we should preach more morals in this comment section to help all suspects in question out. Or better yet, just free all suspects and not have any punishment, that sounds like a plan!
Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 28, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Ok, that goes a little overboard, obama. The person of interest has not been arrested, but I think the best thing for him (regardless of the crimes) is rehab. He needs help, no matter what. And if he were in rehab (like I said before), the public (as well as the police) would know for sure that he wasn't involved.

Peace, why did he throw you out for being disrespectful?
Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on January 28, 2008 at 5:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree eagles. I have heard that the suspect has been in and out of rehab centers, but with their money they could send him to the really good one in Minnesota.
It might actually help him get clean and stay that way.
I know a great deal about this subject due to problems in my extended family as well as a I did a research paper on this in college.
