11-year-old All-Stars win in extra innings

Published Tuesday, July 1, 2008

BROOKHAVEN — The Natchez 11-year-old All-Stars overcame a slow start to rally for a 10-4 win over Brookhaven in eight innings Monday night at the sub-district tournament.

The key to Natchez’s win was the pitching of relief and winning pitcher Trey Fleming. Fleming came on in relief of starting pitcher Quinn Logan and mowed down Brookhaven’s hitters. Fleming struck out 13 batters in seven innings and gave Natchez an opportunity to get back in the game.

Natchez won the game by scoring six runs in the top of the eighth inning.

“We got a lot of key hits,” Natchez coach Billy Ray Farmer said. “We left the bases loaded a couple of times. We started off slow. Once we got going, we got a big inning.”

With the win, Natchez advances to today’s championship round and will take on Wesson. Wesson will have to defeat Natchez twice. Game 1 starts at 6 p.m. If there is a second game, it will take place after the first one.

“We’ve got very, very deep pitching and our bats are coming around,” Farmer said. “Hopefully we’ll win in one (game).”
